MURRAY STATE 17, MID-CONTINENT 1
MURRAY, Ky. - Murray State broke out the bats Wednesday afternoon as seven players collected multi-hit games in a 17-1 victory over Mid-Continent at Reagan Field.
The game was scoreless through the first three innings before MSU erupted for nine runs in the fourth inning. Michael Hargrove and Luke Daugherty delivered back-to-back RBI singles to get the Breds on the board. Taylor Mathews, Ty Stetson and Kollin Dowdy each delivered two-run doubles in the frame. Hargrove closed out the scoring with a run-producing double to left center.
After the Cougars got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth, the Breds answered right back with three more runs in the bottom of the inning. Tyler Lawrence started the inning with a double, and was followed by three-straight RBI singles off the bats of Mathews, Stetson and Matt McGowan.
The reserves got into the act in the act in the eighth inning as freshman Clay Kelly delivered a two-run single to right center, and Matthew Johnson followed with an RBI single to right field. For both players, it was their first collegiate hit and RBI.
The pitching was not to be outdone as five pitchers combined to allow just one run on four hits. Cameron Wallace (1-0) picked up the win after allowing one run on one hit and striking out three in two innings. John Lollar made his collegiate debut and fanned two over two innings. BT Wichman also made his debut and struck out one in one inning.
Dowdy led the offense by going 4-for-6 with a pair of doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored. Mathews finished 3-for-4 with a double, triple and three RBIs, while Daugherty went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Stetson and Kelly each added two hits and three RBIs.
#7 LOUISVILLE 13, EASTERN KENTUCKY 1
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Eastern Kentucky lost 13-1 at No. 7 Louisville on Wednesday.
The Colonels (1-3) scored first, but the Cardinals (3-1) then scored 13 unanswered. Kyle Nowlin led off the game with a single up the middle and Doug Teegarden followed with a double down the left field line. Consecutive ground outs were enough to stake EKU to an early 1-0 lead.
UofL took the lead in the bottom of the second. With the bases loaded and one out, Alex Chittenden drove in a pair with a single through the left side. The Cardinals added six more in the third, including a three-run home run by Shane Crain. Louisville scored five more in the sixth inning.
Teegarden finished 2-for-2, his first multi-hit game of the season. Nowlin had one hit in three at bats and scored the lone EKU run. Chittenden was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs for Louisville. Zach Lucks went 2-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs.
Matt Lynch (0-1) started for the Colonels and allowed five runs on five hits in two innings. Ben Brooks, Alex Hamilton and Cody Creamer combined for four innings of scoreless relief. Zack Burdi (1-0) garnered the win after holding Eastern hitless and scoreless for two innings of relief. Jake Sparger started and allowed one run on four hits in four innings.
MOREHEAD STATE 3, MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE 2
MOORHEAD, Miss. - A two-out home run in the top of the eighth inning by junior right fielder Brandon Rawe pushed the Morehead State baseball team past Mississippi Valley State, 3-2, on Wednesday afternoon at the Belipanni Baseball Complex.
Morehead State picks up its second straight win to improve to 2-3 on the season, while Mississippi Valley State falls to 0-4.
Senior left-hander Noah Smallwood came out of the bullpen to record his first win of the season. Sophomore righty Craig Pearcy secured the save, putting away the final four Delta Devil batters.
Rawe and junior designated hitter Chris Robinson each went 3-for-4 to lead the Eagle offense.
The Delta Devils took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an infield single, but MSU responded with two in the top of the second using three hits in the frame. Rawe had a leadoff double.
MVSU tied the game in the bottom of the fourth via an RBI single.
Smallwood and Pearcy allowed just one hit over the final four innings. Junior starting pitcher Blake Smith allowed two runs, one earned, with five strikeouts and two walks in 5.1 innings.
SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 6, HARRIS-STOWE 4
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Southeast Missouri baseball team (3-2) downed the Harris-Stowe State University Hornets (0-1) Wednesday evening, 6-4, in the Redhawk's 2014 home opener at Capaha Field.
Harris-Stowe wasted no time getting on the board in the first inning of their season opener. Jess Cartner hit a one-out double down the left field line, advanced on an ball that dropped between Cole Bieser and Dalton Hewitt in right-center field, and scored on a sacrifice fly.
The Redhawk bats came out hot in the bottom of the opening stanza. Bieser took a ball in the back to get speed on the bases with one out. He scored from first base on a double off the bat of Matt Tellor. Cole Ferguson reached on an error. Andy Lennington scored Tellor with an RBI single through the left side. Derek Gibson drove Ferguson in with a single down the right field line. Southeast led 3-1 after one inning.
The Hornets tied the game in the second inning with two runs on two hits. HSSU extended the lead in the third to go up 4-3 on Southeast.
The Redhawks tied the game in the in the bottom of the third when Lennington drew a leadoff walk then scored on an sacrifice fly off the bat of Andy Lack.
Southeast scored the go-ahead runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Bieser drew a leadoff walk to start the inning. With two out, Lennington singled to third base and Bieser advanced to third on a throwing error by the third baseman. The go-ahead run came on a perfectly executed double steal as Lennington swiped second and Bieser stole home to give Southeast the lead. Hewitt reached on a throwing error by the shortstop, allowing Lennington to score and go up 6-4 on Southeast.
The offense on both sides remind silent for the remainder of the game as Southeast held on for the win.
Brady Wright (1-0) picked up his first win in a Redhawk uniform after coming in in relief in the fifth inning. Wright pitched 2.0 innings giving up no runs or hits while only walking one batter.
Redhawk starter, freshman Andrew Croucher, had 4.0 innings of work, giving up four runs on seven hits to the Hornets. Croucher walked two batters and struck out three, including the first batter he faced in his collegiate career.
The Redhawks bullpen was solid again, Wednesday. Aside from Wright, Alex Siddle, Skylar Cobb, and Garret Stockton all pitched 1.0 innings, combining for only three hits. Stockton earned his second save of the season.
Offensively for Southeast, Tellor and Lennington each had two hits and an RBI. Lennington scored two runs in the game.
Southeast was outhit in the contest, 10-8.
#26 OLE MISS 6, UT MARTIN 0
OXFORD, Miss. - The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team matched the No. 26 team in the nation pitch-for-pitch for the majority of today’s contest before Ole Miss scored five runs in the final two innings for a 6-0 win at Swayze Field.
The Skyhawks received an inspired start on the mound out of redshirt senior Alex Boshers. Making his first appearance since having Tommy John surgery in March 2013, the Nashville, Tenn. native tossed four innings while allowing just two hits and one earned run. He retired the first eight batters he faced but was tagged with the loss after his lone run allowed scored on a wild pitch in the third inning.
Jackson Zarubin accounted for 1.2 innings of shutout ball in his season debut this evening. John Skubina (0.1 innings, one unearned run) and Chris Ross (two innings, four runs) also made appearances tonight for UT Martin (0-4), who has either led or been within two runs after seven innings of play in all four games in 2014.
Offensively, freshman Chase Young reached base three times (single, two walks) to lead the Skyhawks. Nico Zych also successfully reached base twice in four plate appearances today.
Ole Miss (4-0) was led by multi-hit efforts out of Auston Bousfield and Austin Anderson, while Dalton Dulin scored a pair of runs. Rebel starting pitcher Jacob Waguespack earned the win after throwing four scoreless innings while on a pitch count.
UT Martin was close to breaking the game open in the first inning. Fletcher Johnson drew a five-pitch walk to lead off the game and moved up to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Young. Jake Deason then followed with a walk and after a Phil Sorensen single, the bases were loaded with only one out. However, Waguespack got out of trouble with an inning-ending double play.
Boshers then shut down the Rebels until a two-out single in the third inning gave Ole Miss its first baserunner of the game. Three batters later, the Rebels took a 1-0 advantage on a wild pitch before Boshers recovered to keep the Skyhawk deficit at one run.
In his final inning of work, Boshers pitched around a one-out double to strand a pair of runners in the fourth inning and keep UT Martin within striking distance.
Zarubin needed only seven pitches to breeze through a perfect fifth inning. He then departed the game with a pair of baserunners aboard in the sixth before Skubina came on to record the third out.
Ole Miss would add one run in the seventh and four runs in the eighth to go on top by a 6-0 margin. Young and Zych would each single in the top of the ninth to keep the Skyhawks’ hopes alive but Rebel reliever Jeremy Massie bounced back to finish out the inning.
