NASHVILLE - Belmont Baseball fell to Indiana State, 4-2, Saturday afternoon at Rose Park.
The Sycamores jumped out to a 4-0 lead behind a solo home run from Jacob Hayes and a bases clearing double from Derek Hannahs.
Drew Ferguson blasted his fourth homer of the season in the sixth. A sacrifice fly from Nick Egli scored Alec Diamond, who doubled to left field after Ferguson's home run.
Patrick McGrath pitched his first complete game for the Bruins. The junior allowed seven hits and struck out four.
TENNESSEE TECH 13-19, NYIT 1-3
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - The bats came alive for the Tennessee Tech baseball team Saturday afternoon as the Golden Eagles swept a doubleheader from the visiting NYIT Bears. Tech outscored its opponent 32-4, winning the first contest by a score of 13-1 and the second by a score of 19-3.
The Golden Eagles smacked five home runs on the day, including two from senior Daniel Miles who broke the program record for RBI in a single game with eight. The third baseman blasted two long balls, a double, and a single while drawing a walk and scoring three runs himself. And that was just in Game Two. He added a hit and walk in the first contest as well.
Junior starter David Hess controlled the NYIT batters in the first contest, fanning seven through six innings of work. He allowed just one earned run and four hits while picking up his first victory of the season.
Second basemen Zach Zarzour and Andrew Contreras led the Tech attack in Game One, driving in three runs apiece. Zarzour finished 2-for-4 at the dish, scoring two runs and using a two-run double to help extend Tech's lead. Contreras, who took over at second for Zarzour in the bottom of the sixth and proceed to drill a two-run double down the right field line.
Jake Rowland added two RBI in the first contest, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk and two runs scored. Junior Dylan Bosheers led all hitters in Game One, grabbing three hits in five trips to the plate while scoring two runs.
Catcher Jordan Parris clobbered his first moonshot of the season, towering one over the left wall as part of a 2-for-4 performance. He also scored three runs in the first game.
Miles took over in game two, but had plenty of help putting up 19 runs. Zarzour collected two doubles, driving in two runs while scoring twice as well. Bosheers put together a second three-hit game while scoring two more runs and driving in one.
Senior slugger Zach Stephens launched his second dinger of the year while going 2-for-4 with four runs scored and two RBI. Jordan Hopkins smacked his first home run in the second game, driving in two runs on the shot.
Brandon Thomasson went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Rowland added two runs and an RBI on a 2-for-3 performance as well.
Right-hander Austin Tolle picked up his second win of the season, notching six strikeouts in five innings of work. He allowed just two earned runs and one walk.
#25 ARKANSAS 8, EASTERN ILLINOIS 3
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The Panther baseball team dropped game two of its weekend series at No. 25 Arkansas, 8-3, at Baum Stadium. EIU falls to 1-5 on the year.
Trailing 3-0 heading into the eighth inning, the Panthers tied the game by scoring three runs on three hits. Caleb Howell hit an RBI double to left field for the first run before Frankie Perrone hit a two-out, two-RBI single to right field for the final two runs.
The lead did not last long as the Razorbacks (5-0) responded in the bottom of the eighth inning by scoring five runs on three hits. Michael Gunn (1-0) retied the final three EIU batters in the following inning to close the game. He had one strikeout and did not allow a hit in 1.1 scoreless innings.
Chris Oliver made the start for the Razorbacks and allowed two hits while striking out four in six scoreless innings. Matt Borens was the starting pitcher for the Panthers as the junior pitcher surrendered four hits and two unearned runs in six innings of work. The junior pitcher had three strikeouts and did not issue any walks.
Arkansas had three more hits (10-7) than EIU and left two more runners on base (8-6). The Panthers committed two errors while the Razorbacks did not have any miscues.
The Razorbacks broke open a scoreless game in the fifth inning, scoring two runs on two hits and one error. Arkansas also scored in the seventh inning on a Joe Serrano RBI single.
Joe Greenfield (0-1) took the loss for EIU, allowing four runs and three hits in 1.1 innings of action. The senior pitcher also threw one strikeout and walked one batter.
Howell led the Panther offense as he went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run and a RBI. Perrone added two RBI while Montana Timmons went 1-for-1 at the plate with a run.
Michael Bernal went 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs and a RBI for the Razorbacks. Brian Anderson went 2-for-4 with three RBI, a run and a homer.
VALPARAISO 10, JACKSONVILLE STATE 3
JACKSONIVLLE, Ala. - Karch Kowalczyk had three hits and drove in five runs to lead Valpariso to a 10-3 win over Jacksonville State in college baseball on Saturday afternoon.
Drew Hasler (1-0) allowed just one run and seven hits after pitching seven solid innings on the mound to earn the win for the Crusaders. JSU's Zachary Fowler (0-1) gave up three runs on seven hits in four innings to suffer his first loss of the year for the Gamecocks.
The Crusaders (3-2) took a 3-0 lead after scoring a run in the first and two in the second after Spencer Mahoney and Jeff Edwards each drove in a run with a double and a single.
The Gamecocks (3-2) got on the board in the fourth inning after Paschal Petrongolo scored on Josh Bobo's RBI single to left field to cut the lead to 3-1, but the Crusaders then scored four in the seventh and three in the eighth to extend the lead to 10-1.
Kowalczyk drove in three runs with a double in the seventh inning, and then drove in two more runs in the eighth inning, before the Gamecocks scored two in the bottom of the ninth.
Andrew Bishop led off with a single and moved to second after Bobo walked. Stephen Bartlett followed with a double to scored Bishop and Bobo for the final margin.
Spencer Mahoney and Kowalczyk each had three hits for the Crusaders, while Jeff Edwards, Chris Manning and Michael Morman each had two hits. JSU was led by Daniel Gaither, Andrew Bishop and Sebra with two hits each.
SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 7, IPFW 6
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Southeast Missouri baseball team nabbed a series win against the IPFW (2-4) Mastodons Saturday with a game two victory, 7-6. Southeast Missouri improves to 5-2 on the season and will look to sweep the Mastodons Sunday in the series finale.
The game remained scoreless until the Redhawk half of the third inning.
Matt Tellor put Southeast on the board in the third inning with one big swing of the bat. With Jason Blum on base, Tellor drove a huge home run to right field, putting the Redhawks up 2-0.
Redhawk starter Christian Hull retired 14-straight IPFW batters and had a perfect game going into the fifth inning. After Hull hit IPFW first baseman Shane Trevino with two out, Kristian Gayday tied the game with monster home run of his own.
IPFW took their first lead of the series in the sixth inning. With Travis Hayes on the mound for Hull and runners on first and third with no out, Kevin Wirth drove in the go-ahead run on an RBI single to left. Catcher Steve Lowden followed it up with an RBI single of his own to take a 4-2 on Southeast in the sixth.
Southeast found themselves with two outs early in the bottom of the sixth but that didn't stop a Redhawk rally from happening. Brandon Boggetto hit a two-out double and scored on a double from Blum. IPFW made their second call to the bullpen and brought in Connor Lawhead to face Cole Bieser. Bieser walked, Blum advanced to third on a wild pitch, followed by another walk to Tellor. With bases loaded, Derek Gibson drew a walk to bring home the tying run. With bases still loaded, Andy Lennington hit a high, fly ball to left that was caught by the wind, causing the left fielder to misread the ball and fail to make the third out. Lennington cleared the bases and advanced to third on the play as the left fielder made a throwing error on the throw back to the infield. Southeast went up 7-4 on the Mastodons.
IPFW took one run back in the eighth inning on an RBI groundout by Lowden.
With a two-run lead, Garret Stockton was brought in to close the game out for Southeast in the ninth inning. IPFW was not going down without a fight though as Stockton found himself with runners on the corners with one out. Rightfielder Brandon Soat singled up the middle to narrow the Redhawk lead to 7-6. With the tying run on third, Stockton worked his way out of the ninth inning jam to secure the series win for the Redhawks. Stockton picked up his third save of the season.
The Mastodons outhit Southeast 10-8 in the contest.
Blum and Tellor each recorded two hits for Southeast and both scored two runs.
Reliever Greg Mosel (1-0) picked up his first win in a Redhawk uniform Saturday. Mosel pitched 3.0 innings, giving up only one run on two hits. Mosel fanned five batters and walked none. Hull was one strikeout short of tying his career-high of eight; which was set on Feb. 24, 2012 at home against IPFW.
Connor Lawhead (0-1) suffered the loss after only pitching 0.1 innings.
MURRAY STATE 5, BOWLING GREEN 4
MURRAY, Ky. - Junior Matt McGowan delivered a two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Murray State the lead for good as the Breds evened the series against Bowling Green with a 5-4 victory Saturday afternoon at Reagan Field.
After the Falcons (2-3) tied the game with three runs in the top of the sixth, Ty Stetson doubled to left field to put runners on second and third with two outs. McGowan took the 1-1 pitch through the left side to score both runners. A hustling Stetson slid just under the tag on a bang-bang play at the plate.
BGSU threatened to tie the game again in the seventh as they started the inning with a double. Cody Maerz took the comebacker from the next batter and got the runner at third after a short run-down. The Falcons were able to scratch across one run on a double by Jeremy Shay, but Maerz would shut the door.
Maerz (1-1) earned the victory after he allowed one run on three hits and four strikeouts over 3.2 innings.
The Breds (3-2) got on the board first as Taylor Mathews singled off the pitcher with two outs to put two on in the second. Stetson followed by driving in two runs with a triple to center field.
MSU added a run in the fifth as McGowan started the inning with a double and scored when Anthony Bayus followed with an RBI double of his own.
The Falcons tied the game in the sixth with the help of a pair of Breds errors. T.J. Losby delivered a sacrifice fly and Andrew Kubuski singled to left to tie the game. After a double put runners on second and third, Maerz entered the game and retired both hitters he faced to end the threat.
The top three hitters in the Breds lineup produced as they combined to go 6-for-11 with three doubles, a triple and all five RBIs. Stetson led the way by going 3-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBIs. McGowan went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
Cameron Finch did not factor in the decision for the second-straight start. The senior allowed three runs, two earned, on nine hits over 5.1 innings. Trevor Blaylock (0-1) took the loss for BGSU after allowing two runs on three hits over three innings.
#5 SOUTH CAROLINA 2, EASTERN KENTUCKY 0
COLUMBIA, S.C. - Eastern Kentucky battled fifth ranked South Carolina to a scoreless tie through five innings, but the Gamecocks scored twice in the sixth to pull out a 2-0 win on Saturday in game two of the series.
South Carolina (6-0) has not allowed a run in 42 consecutive innings.
The game remained scoreless until the sixth inning. EKU (1-5) got a runner into scoring position in the top of the inning, but came up empty. The Gamecocks took the lead in the bottom half of the sixth. With one out, Connor Bright doubled to left. Grayson Greiner followed with a two-run home run that just barely cleared the left field wall.
Tanner Perkins (0-1) turned in his second quality start of the season. The senior transfer from Western Kentucky scattered seven hits over six innings. He allowed two runs, walked two and struck out one.
Logan Hershenow kept the Gamecocks at bay over the final two innings. He allowed two hits and struck out a pair. Eastern Kentucky relievers had retired 15 straight batters – 11 straight in this series – before a one-out South Carolina single in the eighth.
Jack Wynkoop (2-0) earned the win after tossing seven and one-third shutout innings. He allowed just three hits, walked one and struck out 10. Joel Seddon earned the save after tossing a perfect ninth inning.
Three players – Luke Wurzelbacher, Justin Cessna and TJ Alas – recorded one hit each for the Colonels. Brison Celek went 2-for-2 for South Carolina. Greiner finished 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.
MOREHEAD STATE 15, GRAMBLING 11 (11)
GRAMBLING, La. - A seven-run eleventh inning propelled the Morehead State baseball team to a 15-11 win over Grambling State Saturday evening at Ellis Field to even up the series at one game apiece.
The Eagles (3-4) took a 6-5 cushion into the bottom of the ninth and an 8-6 lead into the bottom of the tenth but each time allowed the Tigers (1-5) to even the score up.
Junior right fielder Brandon Rawe went 4-for-6 with five RBI and two doubles in the contest, giving the Eagles an advantage on three separate occasions. It was Rawe's third straight multi-hit performance, and his fifth on the season.
MSU got things going in the top of the third with back-to-back doubles from Rawe and junior designated hitter Chris Robinson to take a 3-0 lead. However, GSU answered back in the home half of the inning, driving in four runs.
Junior first baseman Kane Sweeney knotted the contest up in the top of the fourth with a solo home run over the left field wall, but the Tigers again retook the lead, 5-4, in the bottom half of the inning.
Senior left-hander Noah Smallwood (2-0) picked up the win out of the bullpen for the second time in as many appearances.
BAYLOR 15, AUSTIN PEAY 1
WACO, Texas - Austin Peay State University’s baseball team had few answers in a 15-1 non-conference loss to Baylor, Saturday, at Baylor Ballpark.
Austin Peay (1-5) had limited scoring opportunities during the contest, placing a runner in scoring position in just the third and seventh innings. The Govs best scoring opportunity came when they loaded the bases with no outs in the third. Yet they managed one run – courtesy left field Rolando Gautier’s RBI single – before Baylor starter Brad Kuntz struck out the side.
On the mound, the Govs could not consistent solve the Baylor attack. Starting pitcher Alex Robles was tagged for three runs in the first inning and surrendered a fourth run in the second inning. It is the fourth straight game APSU has given up runs in the opening frame and ultimately they fell to 1-3 in those contests.
Robles settled in and held Baylor scoreless in the third and fourth innings. He started the fifth with a ground out before surrendering back-to-back singles which forced him from the mound.
Baylor (4-2) feasted on the Govs bullpen, eventually scoring a run in the fifth inning. However, they tagged on two runs in the sixth and put together an eight-run seventh inning to put the game out of reach.
The Bears finished with 20 hits as each of its starting nine posted a multi-hit outing and seven of the nine starters posted an RBI. First baseman Mitch Price and designated hitter Grayson Porter each had three hits. Shortstop Lawton Langford had two hits and a team-best three RBI.
Austin Peay finished with four hits. Second baseman Kevin Corey had a pair of hits to pace the Govs. Gautier and first baseman Matt Wollenzin each had a hit.
Robles (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing five runs on 11 hits in 4.1 innings.
Kuntz (1-0) picked up the victory after allowing one unearned run in six innings while striking out seven.
EASTERN MICHIGAN 18, UT MARTIN 6
NASHVILLE - The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team generated a season-high in runs today but the Skyhawks couldn’t cool off Eastern Michigan’s bats in an 18-6 loss at ES Rose Park.
Earlier in the day, Game 1 of the series was officially concluded, as Eastern Michigan claimed a 17-3 win. The game had been postponed in the top of the ninth inning on Friday evening because of a curfew at Belmont University, where the series is being played because of poor playing conditions at Skyhawk Field.
A total of four Skyhawks chalked up multi-hit outings today. Sophomore Drew Erie went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI while the freshman trio of Chase Young, Ben Upton and Max Balter also collected two hits, one run scored and one RBI apiece.
On the mound, Dalton Potts was charged with the loss after allowing 10 runs in 2.1 innings. Carter Smith (2.2 innings, four runs), Cody Miller (one run against two batters faced), Taylor Douglas (two scoreless innings) and Jacob Gansert (three runs in one inning) also made appearances today.
Serving as the home team for this game, Eastern Michigan got off to a quick start with six runs in the bottom of the first and two more in the bottom of the second.
UT Martin got a pair of runs back in the top of the third. Erie and Balter led off with back-to-back singles. Fletcher Johnson followed with a bunt single and advanced 90 feet on a throwing error by the Eagle third baseman that allowed Erie to score. Young then followed with an RBI single up the middle to make the score 6-2. The Skyhawks would later load the bases with one out but couldn’t push across another run.
Eastern Michigan added two more runs in the third but Smith held the Eagles scoreless in the fourth. UT Martin tacked on one more run in the fifth when Upton singled in Young, who had reached on a bunt single to begin the inning.
The Eagles scored four runs in the fifth but UT Martin kept battling. Erie was issued a leadoff walk and eventually came around to score on a throwing error in the sixth to make the score 14-4.
Eastern Michigan scored once in the sixth before the Skyhawks tallied two runs in the top of the seventh. Nick Molina (walk), Upton (bunt single) and Kenny King (pinch hit walk) were all aboard the basepaths when Erie was hit by a pitch to score Molina. Balter then lifted a sacrifice fly into center that plated Upton.
Douglas kept the Eagles off the scoreboard in the seventh but Eastern Michigan tacked on three more runs in the eighth to conclude the scoring for the game.
NEW MEXICO STATE 16-12, SIUE 12-2
LAS CRUCES, N.M. - – Keaton Wright and Devin Caldwell combined for eight hits, six RBIs and two home runs Saturday but it wasn't enough to withstand New Mexico State's offensive output, as the Aggies swept a baseball doubleheader from SIUE 16-12 and 12-2.
SIUE falls to 1-5 after the pair of losses. New Mexico State improved to 5-2. The two teams will play the finale of the four game set
The Cougars scored 12 runs on 15 hits in the opener, but it wasn't enough, as NMSU earned the 16-12 win.
After getting down 6-0 after two innings, the Cougars fought back. SIUE scored three runs in the third inning, two runs in the fourth, and five more runs in the fifth to take a 10-6 lead into the bottom of the fifth.
The Aggies scored four runs each in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings and then added two runs in the home half of the seventh to move ahead 14-10. The Cougars added a pair of runs in the eighth inning for the final margin.
Wright paced the Cougar attack, going 3 for 5 with a home run, two RBIs, and three runs. Chase Green was 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a run. Caldwell was 2 for 5 with a home run, the 24th of his career, two RBIs, and a run. Caldwell's 24 home runs are tied for fourth on SIUE's career home run list.
Brian Sipe was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Jory Goldstrom and Ryan Wagner each had two hits and two RBIs.
Kristoffer Koerper led the Aggies at the plate. He was 3 for 4 with a home run, three RBIs, and two runs scored.
Neither starter figured into the game one decision. SIUE starter Jake Stauffenberg allowed eight runs, six earned, in 4 1/3 innings. He struck out six and did not walk a batter. NMSU starter Kyle Kilgore also allowed eight runs, seven earned, in four innings. He struck out three and walked three.
Cougar reliever Sam Hopkins (0-1) gave up eight runs, five earned, on four hits and five walks in just 1 2/3 innings to take the loss.
Riley Barr (2-1) earned the win for NMSU. He gave up two runs on five hits in 1 1/3 innings out of the bullpen.
NMSU all 12 of its runs over the first three innings in game two. The Cougars scored single runs in the fifth and the seventh innings. Jarrett Bednar allowed 10 runs in just two innings to fall to 0-2 for the season.
Caldwell was 1 for 2 with both of SIUE's RBIs in game two. He drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth and added an RBI-triple in the seventh. Wright was 2 of 3 in the nightcap.
Koerper was 3 for 4 with a home run, three RBIs, and three runs for NMSU. Michael Paulson was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Robert Kraft (1-0) earned the win in game two. He allowed a run on five hits, struck out two, but walked four.
