STARKVILLE, Miss.
- Reid Humphreys hit a two-out, bases loaded RBI single to give No. 10 Mississippi State a 4-3 win over the Panther baseball team on Saturday afternoon. EIU falls to 2-8 on the year.

The Bulldogs took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Jake Vickerson stole third base and crossed home plate on a fielding error by Tyler Schweigert on the play. EIU tied the game at one in the fifth inning on a Frankie Perrone sacrifice fly to center field to score Jacob Reese. Mississippi State regained the lead in the bottom of the frame, 3-1, by scoring two runs on four hits.

In the top of the eighth inning, Perrone hit his first career home run to tie the game again – hitting a two-run shot to left field to make the score, 3-3.

Perrone led the Panther offense as the freshman outfield went 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBI and a run. Caleb Howell went 2-for-4 while Reese finished the day with one hit and one run.

NORTH DAKOTA STATE 3-0, MURRAY STATE 2-9
MURRAY, Ky.
- Murray State and North Dakota State split a doubleheader on Saturday at Reagan Field with the Bison winning the first game and the Thoroughbreds taking the nightcap.

In game one North Dakota State scored a run in the top of the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie and hand Murray State a 3-2 defeat.

NDSU did their damage with one out as Wes Satzinger doubled to left center and came in to score on a Blake Turbak single to left center.

The Bison (2-3) got on the board in the second as Kyle Kleinendorst singled through the right side and stole second.  Nick Altavilla drove in the runner with a single to right center.

NDSU doubled its lead in the fourth as Satzinger doubled to left field and scored when Kleinendorst followed with a double to left center.

The Breds (4-5) managed to tie the game in the fifth as Dalton West walked to start the inning.  With one out, Ty Stetson doubled to right center to put runners on second and third.  Two batters later, Taylor Mathews singled through the left side to score two.

Cameron Finch (0-1) took the loss after allowing three runs on seven hits over 5.1 innings.  Trevor Jaunich (1-0) picked up the victory after allowing just one hit and striking four over 2.1 innings.

In game two Brock Downey only faced one batter over the minimum as he tossed six shutout innings in the win.

The Breds (5-5) got all the offense they would need in the first inning as Anthony Bayus walked and stole second.  Tyler Lawrence drove him in with a single through the left side.

Ty Stetson helped to manufacture a second run in the third inning by drawing a walk.  He then proceeded to steal second, before advancing to third on a wild and then scoring on the second wild pitch of the inning.

MSU broke the game wide open in the fifth as they pushed across seven runs on seven hits.  Taylor Mathews drove in the first run with a single up the middle, and Lawrence drove in his second run by drawing a bases-loaded walk.  After a Luke Daugherty RBI groundout, Michael Hargrove delivered a two-run single.  Clay Kelly closed out the scoring with a two-run single to center, his second hit of the inning.

John Lollar came on in relief of Downey in the seventh and retired all three hitters he faced.  The Murray, Ky., connection combined to not allow a Bison to advance past first base.

Kelly paced the offense by going 2-for-3 with two RBIs.  Lawrence and Hargrove each added two RBIs.  Stetson scored a pair of runs and extended his streak of reaching safely to 38-straight games.

MOREHEAD STATE 8-5, FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON 7-10
MOREHEAD, Ky.
- The Morehead State baseball team split a Saturday doubleheader with Fairleigh Dickinson.  The Eagles used a five-run fifth to post an 8-7 victory in the opener at Allen Field, but the Knights responded with a four-run ninth to record a 10-5 win in the series finale.

Junior left fielder Nick Newell went 3-for-4 with one run and three RBI for Morehead State (5-6) in the opener.  Five Eagles batted in one run apiece, while junior first baseman Kane Sweeney collected two runs and senior third baseman Jeff Birkofer registered a pair of base knocks.

Junior right-hander Brendan Butler, the third of six Fairleigh Dickinson pitchers, fell to 0-2 on the year with the loss.  He surrendered four earned runs and three hits in 0.2 innings.

Fairleigh Dickinson (3-3) posted 31 hits in the two tilts combined.  Five Knights collected multiple hits in game one, while six FDU batters had more than one base knock in game two.  Junior center fielder Riley Moonan paced the guests by going 5-for-10 with four runs and two RBI.

Fairleigh Dickinson sophomore right-hander Nick Cuono snagged the game-two win, which marked his first of the campaign.  He allowed just one earned run and seven hits in 6.2 innings.

Morehead State sophomore right-hander Tyler Keele took the game-two loss, which was his first after two victories earlier this year.  He surrendered five earned runs and 10 hits in 3.1 innings.

MSU batted around in the sixth inning of game one.  Newell got things rolling with a two-run single.  Junior second baseman Tyler Bigler followed with an RBI single.  Sweeney then added a run-scoring double before junior right fielder Brandon Rawe chipped in with an RBI single.

Freshman designated hitter Jimmy Wright launched his first homer as an Eagle in the second inning of game two, but Fairleigh Dickinson answered with three runs in the third, one in the fourth, one in the fifth and four in the ninth.  MSU loaded the bases in the ninth, but FDU escaped the jam.

Morehead State recorded 17 hits in the twinbill, but stranded the same number of runners.  The Eagles took advantage of 11 free passes in the opener, but tallied just two in the nightcap.

The Belmont pitching staff was solid throughout as no walks were allowed.Patrick McGrath went 6.2 innings on the mound while striking out three. EASTERN KENTUCKY 5, UNC ASHEVILLE 2
ASHEVILLE, N.C
. - Shea Sullivan’s two-out, two-run single in the seventh inning broke a 2-2 tie and sent Eastern Kentucky to a 5-2 win over North Carolina Asheville on Saturday.

After beating the Bulldogs (1-6) 3-1 on Friday, the Colonels (3-6) have now secured the series victory.

Ben Fisher got Eastern Kentucky on the board in the second inning with a two-run single up the middle that scored Cole Warrenfeltz and Bryan Soloman.  UNCA tied the score in the sixth on a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch.

Luke Wurzelbacher led off the seventh with a single to left.  With one out, Warrenfeltz singled to right.  A ground ball moved the runners to second and third.  Sullivan’s single to center drove in both runners and put EKU in front for good.

Wurzelbacher finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored.  Sullivan went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.  Six different Bulldogs finished with one hit each.

Senior newcomer Tanner Perkins (1-1) turned in his third quality start in as many trips to the mound this season.  He tossed seven innings, allowed two runs on five hits, walked one and struck out one.

Cameron Langfels pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Cody Creamer picked up his second save in as many days after tossing a perfect ninth inning.  The EKU relief corps has now pitched 16 and one-third consecutive innings without allowing an earned run.

JACKSONVILLE STATE 1, KENNESAW STATE 0
JACKSONVILLE, Ala.
- Zachary Fowler allowed just one hit and had seven strikeouts to lead Jacksonville State to a 1-0 win over Kennesaw State at Rudy Abbott Field on Saturday afternoon in college baseball.

Fowler (1-0) allowed a single to the first batter of the game, and then recorded the next 21 outs to earn his first win of the year. The junior right-hander from Daphne, Ala., threw just 77 pitches and had a career-high seven strikeouts for the Gamecocks.

Travis Stout had two strikeouts in the ninth inning and allowed the Gamecocks only other hit to pick up his third save of the season. The two hits allowed by the Gamecocks were the fewest since JSU allowed two hits against Tennessee Tech on May 10, 2008, in a seven-inning game.

Kennesaw State's Travis Bergen (1-1) allowed just three hits and had eight strikeouts in seven innings on the mound to suffer the loss for the Owls.

The Gamecocks scored the only run of the day in the home half of the first inning after Michael Bishop led the inning with a double in the left field corner and moved to third on Josh Bobo's infield grounder.

Griff Gordon then followed with a one-out grounder to third base to score Bishop and give Jax State the only run needed to pick up the win. Bishop finished the game with two of JSU's three hits in the game.

Kal Simmons and Chris McGowan were the only two Kennesaw State players to record a hit.

STEPHEN F. AUSTIN 10-1, UT MARTIN 6-0
NACOGDOCHES, Texas
- The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team held a late lead in Game 1 and nearly matched Stephen F. Austin pitch for pitch in Game 2 but ultimately fell 10-6 and 1-0 to the Lumberjacks in a doubleheader played today at Jaycees Field.

Offensively, Drew Erie and Taylor Douglas each had multi-hit efforts in Game 1. Ben Upton crushed a three-run homer while Phil Sorensen added a pair of RBI’s in Game 1 but the Skyhawks were held to just two hits in Game 2, both of which came off the bat of Zack Malone.

On the mound, Alex Martin (0-2) went the distance in the seven-inning Game 2, yielding just one run on three hits before he was hit with the hard-luck loss. Dalton Potts received a no-decision in Game 1 after allowing four runs in 4.1 innings. Carter Smith followed with 2.2 scoreless innings but Chris Ross (0-1) was charged with the loss after allowing two earned runs while facing three batters. John Houston also made an appearance in Game 1, conceding three runs in one inning.

The Skyhawks continue their Spring Break road trip with a two-game midweek series at Central Arkansas on March 4-5.

In game one Stephen F. Austin pushed across six runs in the bottom of the eighth to come away with the 10-6 win.

The Lumberjacks struck first with a run in the first inning but Potts answered by retiring the side in order in the second inning and keeping Stephen F. Austin off the scoreboard in the third inning as well.

UT Martin evened the score at 1-1 in the top of the fourth. Nico Zych drew a one-out walk and later stole second. He then came around to score on a two-out RBI single by Kenny King.

Stephen F. Austin pushed across two runs in the fourth to go back ahead but the Skyhawks got one run back in the fifth. Three straight singles by Douglas, Chase Young and Erie loaded the bases with one out, setting up Sorensen for an RBI groundout to the right side to make the score 3-2.

The Lumberjacks scored one more run in the bottom half of the fifth before Smith posted a scoreless frame in the sixth.

A four-run seventh would then hand the Skyhawks their first lead of the game. Young was issued a one-out walk and Erie followed with a single that moved Young to third. Sorensen then reached on an error but was still credited with the RBI to make the score 4-3. After a popout resulted in two men on and two out, Upton pulverized a three-run shot that gave UT Martin a 6-4 advantage.

Smith then made short work of the Lumberjacks in the seventh, sitting down Stephen F. Austin in order.

However, the Lumberjacks would strike back as six runs crossed the plate in the eighth and the Skyhawks could not get a baserunner aboard in the top of the ninth.

In game two Martin shined on the mound for the Skyhawks but the UT Martin bats couldn’t back him up in a low-scoring affair that saw both teams combine for only five hits.

After a 1-2-3 first inning, a leadoff walk in the second inning doomed Martin. He would bounce back to strikeout the next Stephen F. Austin batter on just three pitches but Nick Ramos hit an RBI triple to center that gave the Lumberjacks a 1-0 advantage. Martin did recover to strand Ramos after inducing a pair of groundouts to close out the threat.

The Skyhawks would get baserunners in scoring position in the second and third innings but could not push a runner across the plate.

Martin pitched around a one-out walk in the third and a harmless two-out single in the fourth to post zeroes up on the scoreboard. Malone would lead off the fifth with a double to left center and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Mikey Nantze. However, two strikeouts followed and UT Martin could not tie the game up.

Martin retired the side in order in the fifth and tallied another shutout frame in the sixth but the Skyhawks could not muster any more offense.

TENNESSEE TECH 12, NORTHWESTERN 2
COOKEVILLE, Tenn.
- A complete game all around from both the offense and defense led the Tennessee Tech baseball team to victory Saturday afternoon as the Golden Eagles won their ninth consecutive game by defeating Northwestern, 12-2, at Bush Stadium at the Averitt Express Baseball Complex.

Tech clinched the series over the Wildcats behind the arm of right-handed starter David Hess and the entire starting Golden Eagle lineup, which went off for 18 hits. Hess collected his second win of the year, tossing six innings while allowing just two earned runs and five hits. The junior struck out seven Northwestern batters, his third start of the season with at least seven Ks.

All nine batters produced at the plate on the day, but four Golden Eagles stood out in the contest, including seniors Zach Zarzour and Brandon Thomasson and juniors Dylan Bosheers and Jordan Hopkins.

Thomasson and Bosheers each drove in three runs on the day with Thomasson finishing 2-for-4 at the plate and Bosheers delivering on three of his five trips to the plate. Hopkins added two RBI on a 3-for-3 day at the dish and Zarzour kept his hot bat swinging, collecting three more hits in the series. Miles had a great day at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 with three runs scored, an RBI, and two walks.

Northwestern looked sure on its way to a good day at the plate, as the second batter of the game, catcher Scott Heelan, drove a long ball over the right field fence to give the Wildcats an early 1-0 lead. Designated hitter Jack Livingston collected a hit in the next at-bat, leaving Tech fans maybe a little weary to start the game.

But Hess settled quickly, inducing a groundball and allowing his defense to turn a inning-ending double play. That was essentially all the Wildcats would get the rest of the game as Hess scattered three more hits across the next five innings, allowing just one more run to score. For good measure, he struck out the side to end in the top of the sixth to put an exclamation point on his win.

Relievers Justin Alexander and Kyle Keatts finished off the final three innings, surrendering a combined three hits with quick work.

Tech didn't score in the first inning, but went off over the next four, scoring 11 of its 12 runs in the contest.

Bosheers started things off for the Golden Eagles, drilling a lead-off single up the middle. Two batters later, Hopkins crushed a triple over the center fielder's head, driving in Bosheers to even up the score. Junior left fielder drove him in two pitches later, putting Tech on top for good.

The Golden Eagles tallied two more in the bottom of the third, using a two-out double from Bosheers to grab one and an RBI single from Hopkins to score the other.

The fourth inning was especially big as the Tech squad doubled its output with a four spot. Zarzour led off with a single to right field and was immediately followed by a single to center field by designated hitter Connor Goodspeed. Zach Stephens grounded into a fielder's choice as Northwestern chose to get Goodspeed at second, allowing Zarzour to advance to third.

Senior Daniel Miles took the next pitch through the left side, driving in Zarzour and putting two on base for Thomasson. The slugger looked at one before clobbering a fall off the center field wall for a two-run triple. Bosheers allowed no breath for the Wildcats, smacking the next pitch through the left side to drive in Thomasson and give Tech an 8-1 lead.

Three more runs in the fifth inning extended Tech's advantage to 11-2. Thomasson and Bosheers each picked up RBI and the third run came in on off a Northwestern balk.

The final four innings came and went with little excitement except for a brief moment in the bottom of the eighth. Pinch-hitting for center fielder Jake Rowland, redshirt freshman Hunter Hudson hammered his first career home run over the center field wall, providing the Golden Eagles with its final score of 12-2.

AUSTIN PEAY 10, BRADLEY 6
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.
- Catcher P.J. Torres had three hits and three RBI to power Austin Peay State University’s baseball team to a 10-6 victory against Bradley, Saturday night, in Day 2 action of the Riverview Inn Classic at Raymond C. Hand Park.

Austin Peay (4-7) led wire-to-wire thanks to a five-run first inning. Starting pitcher Alex Robles helped his own cause with a RBI double to score the Govs first run. Torres followed two batters later and his two-run double put APSU up 3-0. Second baseman Logan Gray added a run on a sacrifice fly and the Govs completed a double steal to tack on a fifth run.

Bradley (7-2) scratched out runs in the second and third innings to narrow the deficit. Catcher Drew Carlile brought home the Braves first run on a groundout in the second. Third baseman Spencer Gaa tacked on another run with a sacrifice fly in the third and Bradley trailed 5-2.

The Govs recovered both of those runs in their half of the third. Torres led off the inning with a triple  to the wall in right center and scored on first baseman Dre Gleason’s sacrifice fly. Shortstop Kevin Corey kept the inning alive with a two-out single and scored on right fielder Rolando Gautier’s single to give APSU a 7-2 lead after three innings.

The Braves made their big push in the fifth inning, plating three runs and threatening for more. Gaa got the Bradley scoring started with an RBI single that followed an APSU error with one out. Robles hit the next batter he faced before getting a fielder’s choice that both brought home a run and supplied a second out. Shortstop Tyler Leffler followed with a RBI single before Robles would end the threat by inducing a fly out, still holding a 7-5 lead.

Another Austin Peay error helped Bradley narrow the deficit to one run in the seventh. After right fielder Max Murphy singled with one out, Robles got the inning’s second out on a fly ball. However, the Govs infield kept the inning alive with an error that allowed the run to score, cutting APSU’s lead to 7-6.

The Govs offense snapped out of a long slumber to respond with the game’s final three runs. Austin Peay did not record a hit after Gautier’s RBI single in the third until Torres hit a two-out solo home run to left, pushing the Govs lead back to two runs. One inning later center fielder Chase Hamilton added some insurance with a towering two-run home run to right field, setting the final score.

Robles (1-1) picked up the victory with his season’s longest outing – a seven-inning effort that saw him allowing six runs (three earned) on eight hits while striking out four. Closer Jared Carkuff recorded the game’s final four outs, striking out two, to notch his season’s second save.

Torres led the Govs offense with a 3-for-4, three-RBI performance that saw him finish a single shy of the cycle. Gleason went 2-for-3 with a RBI and six other Govs recorded a base hit.

Bradley’s Stephen Toma (1-1) suffered the loss after allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits in five innings. Leffler led the Braves nine-hit offensive outing with a 2-for-5, RBI effort.

Southeast touched home twice in the top of the seventh. Derek Gibson hit a leadoff single, advanced to second on a passed ball, and took third on a double by Andy Lack. With a squeeze play on, Blum bunted Tellor in, putting the Redhawks up 2-0.

Memphis got a run back in the sixth inning as Darien Tubbs hit a one-out triple to left, then scored on a groundout to short.

The Tigers took the lead in the seventh inning. With two out and a runner on first, relief pitcher Alex Siddle gave up a single to put another runner on. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch. With runners in scoring position, T. Tubbs singled up the middle, scoring both runners, but was thrown out at second for the third out of the inning. Memphis led 3-2 after seven innings.

Down only a run in the ninth inning, the Redhawks weren't going down without a fight. Dalton Hewitt hit a leadoff single up the middle and was pinch ran for by John Logan Zink. Boggetto flied out followed by a line out by Tellor. With two out and the tying run on first, Gibson doubled down the left field line but Zink was held at third. Mitchell lined out to the first baseman to end the game.

Once again, Southeast outhit Memphis, 9-7, for the second time in the doubleheader. Gibson was a perfect 3-for-3 in the nightcap with an RBI. Tellor and Mitchell each had two hits apiece.

Siddle (0-1) suffered the loss after giving up the go-ahead run in the seventh. Siddle pitched an inning for Southeast. Ryan Lenaburg was stellar in 6.1 innings of work in his third start of the season. Lenaburg gave up two runs on four hits while striking out four batters.

D. Tubbs was the only Tiger to record multiple hits after going 3-for-4 with a run scored.
