MURRAY, Ky. - Tuesday was not the day for Murray State as they committed six errors in helping Arkansas State to a 27-7 victory at Reagan Field.
The Red Wolves (8-8) took advantage of three errors over the first two innings to push across eight runs. They would add five more runs in the third to break the game wide open.
The Breds (7-7) got on the board in the first inning as Ty Stetson extended his streak of reaching safely to 42-straight games with a double to right field. With two outs, Tyler Lawrence drove in Stetson with a single through the left side.
MSU scored again in the fourth inning as Matthew Johnson was hit by a pitch and Clay Fuson singled to left center. Taylor Mathews then stepped in and delivered a three-run home run to left center, the first of his career.
The sixth inning saw the Breds push across three more runs with only one hit. The first three hitters walked to load the bases before a wild pitch pushed across a run. Anthony Bayus then singled home the second run, and a passed ball allowed the third run of the inning to score.
Kyle Cornett (0-1) took the loss after allowing eight runs, one earned, on three hits and two walks over 1.1 innings. Cody Woodhouse (1-0) was credited with the victory after allowing one hit in 1.1 innings of relief.
The Breds offense collected 10 hits, with Stetson, Bayus, Lawrence and Fuson each having two hits apiece.
MOREHEAD STATE 11, MARSHALL 9
MOREHEAD, Ky. - The Morehead State baseball team tallied 14 hits and took advantage of seven free passes to post an 11-9 win over Conference USA opponent Marshall on Tuesday afternoon at Allen Field. The Eagles improve to 7-8 overall, while the Thundering Herd falls to 5-10.
MSU junior catcher Chris Robinson extended his hitting streak to 12 games by going 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI, while junior right fielder Brandon Rawe pushed his streak to 11 contests by going 4-for-5 with one score and four RBI. The four base knocks matched a team high this year.
Morehead State held a 6-1 advantage after plating six runs in the third inning. The Eagles added two insurance runs in the sixth and three more in the eighth to open up an 11-3 upper hand.
Marshall answered with answered with six runs in its final at-bat and put the tying run at second base before senior right-hander Dan Hyatt slammed the door for his third save of the year.
Morehead State sent 11 men to the plate in the third. The Eagles tallied five hits and took advantage of two Marshall errors. Junior first baseman Kane Sweeney and Rawe highlighted the frame with back-to-back run-scoring doubles. MSU cruised from that point until the ninth.
Marshall sent 11 batters to the dish in the ninth. Morehead State's first two pitchers hit three batters, walked two and allowed two hits. A two-run double by sophomore third baseman Aaron Bossi trimmed the deficit to two, but Hyatt recorded the final two outs to preserve the win.
MSU junior right-hander Blake Smith earned the win in his first decision of the campaign. He allowed three earned runs, four hits and four walks while striking out five in 5.2 innings.
MU freshman left-hander Roscoe Blackburn suffered the loss in his first decision of 2014. He allowed three earned runs, three hits and three walks while fanning just one in 2.1 frames.
Freshman center fielder Ryan Kent (2-for-2, 3 R), junior designated hitter Nick Newell (2-for-3, 1 RBI) and junior shortstop Robby Spencer (2-for-5, 2 R) also posted multiple hits for the Eagles.
Bossi and junior left fielder Eric Escobedo notched two base knocks each for the Thundering Herd.
EASTERN KENTUCKY 19, YOUNGSTOWN STATE 14
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Five home runs and a triple in the first two innings keyed Eastern Kentucky’s 19-14 win over Youngstown State at Transylvania University’s Marquard Field in Lexington.
Sophomore Kyle Nowlin tied the school record with three home runs in the game. Four others have also hit three dingers in a game.
The Colonels improved to 6-9 in 2014.
Nowlin drove the very first pitch of the bottom of the first inning over the fence in center field. Sean Hagen also had a solo homer in the inning.
With one out in the second, Doug Teegarden started an eight-run inning with a two-run shot over the right field fence. Nowlin followed with his second home run for a 5-0 EKU lead. Freshman Ben Fisher capped the inning with a grand slam for a 10-0 advantage.
Youngstown State (2-11) scored six in the third inning highlighted by a two-run single by Josh White.
After a lead-off double by Teegarden in the bottom of the fifth, Nowlin hit his third, over the fence in center field again. That scored two of the five runs the Colonels pushed across to go on top 15-7.
Nowlin went 3-for-5 with three runs, four RBIs and a walk. Teegarden had three hits in five at bats, scored twice and drove in a pair. Hagen finished 2-for-4, scored three times, drove in two, walked once and had a stolen base.
Trailing 19-7, the Penguins added seven more in the eighth. This time two-run doubles by Phil Lipari and Alex Larivee fueled the big inning for YSU.
Ben Brooks (1-0) earned the win after tossing two innings in relief. He allowed one run on four hits, struck out two and did not walk a batter.
Davis Saluga had a 3-for-4 day with two runs and two RBIs for Youngstown State. White was 2-for-5 with a run and two RBIs.
TENNESSEE TECH 15, UNC ASHEVILLE 6
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - A consistent offensive attack was all the Tennessee Tech baseball team needed to grab its 14th win of the season Tuesday afternoon, hammering home 15 runs in a 15-6 victory at UNC Asheville.
Eight Golden Eagles recorded hits in the contest and eight Tech players also recorded at least one RBI. Leading all players on the day was freshman Anthony El Chibani, who garnered his first career start against the Bulldogs. Starting in left field, El Chibani went 2-for-4 on the day with two runs scored and a team-high three RBI while also drawing one walk.
Second baseman Zach Zarzour and center fielder Jake Rowland each collected three hits in the contest. Catcher Jordan Hopkins, designated hitter Tyler Brazelton, and Rowland each finished with two RBI apiece.
Reliever Cain Sloan collected his first career win, tossing three innings while surrendering just four hits. He also struck out two in the contest while combining with starter Jeb Scoggins and relievers Chris Chism, Stanton Taylor, Jacob Honea, and Vann Boyce to help Tech to its 14th win.
Tech grabbed runs in each of the first, second, and third innings, getting off to an early 5-2 lead behind RBI by seniors Daniel Miles and Zach Stephens as well as Rowland and Hopkins.
UNC Asheville made a comeback bid, scoring runs in the bottom of the second, third, fourth, and fifth innings. The Bulldogs even managed to take advantage of a two-inning scoring drought by the Golden Eagles, gathering a slim, 6-5 lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Brazelton kicked off the Tech rally in the top of the sixth, ripping a single to center field. El Chibani followed with his own single to right field, advancing Brazelton to third base. A walk by Zarzour loaded the bases for Jake Rowland, who promptly took a pitch the other way for an RBI single through the left side to tie things up at 6-6. El Chibani then scored on a ground out by Stephens to give Tech the lead for good.
One inning later, the Golden Eagles really got cooking, striking four times to put the game away. It all started with a leadoff double by Brandon Thomasson, who finished the game with a hit, run scored, and RBI. Dylan Bosheers followed with a single to to Bulldog pitcher, extending his career-long hitting streak to 14 games.
Jordan Hopkins singled in the next at bat, laying down a bunt that drove in Thomasson. A sac bunt by Brazelton moved Bosheers and Hopkins into scoring position for El Chibani. The freshman delivered with a two-run single left field, advancing to third base off a throwing error. Zarzour walked for the second-straight at bat and forced a bad pickoff attempt by the Bulldog pitcher, allowing El Chibani to score and give Tech a 10-5 lead.
The Bulldogs did manage to grab one more run in the seventh, but another three scores by Tech in the eighth inning pushed any comeback attempt straight out of the minds of the UNC Asheville players.
Brazelton collected a bases-loaded walk to gather his first RBI of the game, driving in Miles for another Golden Eagle run. El Chibani followed with a sac fly to center field and Zarzour wrapped up the eighth inning scoring with an RBI single through the left side.
In the ninth, Thomasson grabbed an RBI off a sac fly to center field, driving in Stephens who had walked in the leadoff at bat and advanced to third base off a double by Miles. Brazelton drove in his second run of the game off a single to center field, providing Tech with its final score of 15-6.
Vann Boyce entered to grab the final three outs for the Tech squad and did just that. The junior lefty struck out the side in his second appearance of the year, finishing off Tech's 14th victory.
The Golden Eagles showed great plate discipline on the day, drawing nine walks and collecting 15 hits.
SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 6, MISSOURI STATE 5
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Southeast Missouri Redhawks baseball team rallied from a 4-0 deficit to defeat the Missouri State (8-6) Bears, 6-5 Tuesday evening. Andy Lack proved the difference maker in the game after laying down a successful squeeze bunt then hitting his first collegiate home run to later tie the game. Southeast Missouri improves to 10-6 on the season.
Missouri State struck early in the first inning. Tate Matheny led off the game with a single to left then scored on a triple that rattled around in the right field corner off the bat of Dylan Becker. Becker was driven in on a blooper that fell in right center field. With runners on second and third, the third Bear run scored on an RBI groundout.
The Bears added to their lead in the second inning with an RBI double by Becker, 4-0 Bears after one and a half innings.
The Redhawks got on the board in the bottom of the inning. With runners on the corners, Lack laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Andy Lennington for Southeast's first run. The pitcher botched the putout on Lack to allow him to reach base safely. Jason Blum reached on an error by the third baseman, also allowing Scott Mitchell to score, 4-2 Bears after two innings.
The Redhawks tied the game with two more runs in the third inning. The Redhawks' third run came on a balk by Bear starter Jake Powers. Derek Gibson, who advanced to third on the balk, scored on an RBI groundout by Lennington to tie the game at four runs each.
The Bears retook the lead in the fourth when Matheny homered to right field to lead off the inning.
Lack answered in the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff home run of his own to retie the game. It was the sophomore's first collegiate home run. In the fifth, Gibson hit the would-be game-winning home run, his first of the season, to right center field, 6-5 Redhawks. The Redhawk bullpen did what they do best and shut batters down to close out the game and secure Southeast's victory.
This is Southeast's first victory over the Bears since Mar. 15, 2011 when the Redhawks won 8-7 in Springfield. The Bears have taken nine of the last 13 meetings between these teams.
Offensively, Lack was 2-for-2 with two RBI. Gibson and Lennington each finished 2-for-4 with an RBI each. Missouri State outhit the Redhawks 11-7 in the contest. Becker had three hits in five at bats with two RBI. Matt Fultz and Matheny each added two hits apiece.
The Redhawks used seven pitchers Tuesday. Starter Garret Stockton was pulled after the first inning after giving up three runs. Skylar Cobb saw the most action with 2.1 innings pitched, giving up a run. Alex Siddle, Brady Wright, Greg Mosel, and Christian Hull combined for 4.2 innings of scoreless baseball. Siddle (1-1) earned his first victory this season after pitching 1.2 innings and only giving up a single hit. Hull earned his second save in his last two appearances after closing out the game for the Redhawks in the ninth inning.
Powers (0-1) suffered the loss after giving up all six of Southeast's runs in 5.0 innings for the Bears. Three Missouri State relief pitchers combined for 3.0 scoreless innings afterwards.
BELMONT 12, MEMPHIS 5
NASHVILLE - Behind four home runs, Belmont (7-9) defeated Memphis, 12-5 Tuesday night at Rose Park.
Despite Memphis taking a 3-0 lead, the Bruins scored five unanswered run to take a lead they would not relinquish.
Freshman Nick Egli blasted two home runs for the Bruins Tuesday night, with his first coming in the second, sparking the Belmont offense.
Jamie Ritchie hit a two-run shot in the third giving Belmont a 4-3 lead. Drew Ferguson launched his sixth homer of the season in the fifth to continue extending Belmont's lead.
A sacrfice fly scored a run for Memphis in the sixth, but Belmont answered with four more runs in the bottom half, including Egli's second homer of the game.
RBIs from Ferguson, Egli and Drake Byrd came in the eighth and secured the 12-5 victory.
James Buckelew got his 44th career start on the mound, tying him for third all-time in program history. The left-hander, who earned his first win of the season, matched a season-best six innings giving up six hits and four runs. He walked three and struck out two.
LIPSCOMB 14, AUSTIN PEAY 6
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Austin Peay State University’s baseball team saw a lead evaporate in the final two innings and dropped a 14-6 decision to Lipscomb, Tuesday night, in nonconference action at Raymond C. Hand Park.
Austin Peay (6-9) grabbed a 6-4 lead thanks to a four-run fourth inning as they took advantage of three consecutive walks in the frame. Catcher P.J. Torres pushed home the inning’s first run with a walk, designated hitter Kevin Corey followed with a sacrifice fly, a Lipscomb wild pitch allowed another run and center fielder Casey Bredlau capped the rally with a RBI single.
The Govs pitching staff had little trouble through seven innings, as five pitchers combined to hold the Bisons to four runs on four hits and one walk. However, things started to unravel in the eighth.
Lipscomb (10-8) waited out APSU reliever Ryan Quick and earned a pair of walks and a single to load the bases. The Govs turned to Tommy Hager, who retired the only batter he faced with one pitch. Austin Peay then handed the ball to Jared Carkuff, who got into a battle with Lipscomb shortstop Grant Massey. Massey would eventually win the battle with a two-run double to right center, tying the game.
Carkuff would escape the eighth with the game tied and returned in the ninth. He allowed a leadoff walk, which Lipscomb moved to second with a sacrifice bunt seeking to gain the lead. The need for small ball was rendered mute when designated hitter Griffin Moore hit a two-run home run that stayed just inside the right foul pole, giving Lipscomb a 8-6 lead.
Lipscomb would keep the pressure on, and the Govs would use two more pitchers in the frame. By the time the dust settled, the Bisons struck for eight runs on five hits and five walks, finishing the inning with the 14-6 final score line.
Carkuff (0-2) was saddled for the loss after allowing three runs in two-thirds of an inning. Austin Peay used 10 pitchers in the contest, five in the final two innings. After allowing just one walk through seven innings, the Govs would surrender seven in the final two innings – four of those eventually scoring.
Lipscomb reliever Jacob Knott (1-2) picked up the win after holding the Govs scoreless for 1.1 innings. The Bisons relief corps did not allow a run in the final five innings, including escaping a bases-loaded jam in the seventh that was Austin Peay biggest threat in that span.
First baseman Dre Gleason and Corey each had two hits to pace Austin Peay’s six-hit offensive attack. Corey finished 2-for-2 with two RBI while Torres added two RBI courtesy a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly.
Lipscomb left fielder Tyson Ashcraft and second baseman Mike Korte each had three hits as part of a 14-hit outburst. Centerfielder Jonathan Allison and right fielder Drew Adams each had three RBI.
#4 VANDERBILT 11, EASTERN ILLINOIS 2
NASHVILLE - The Panther baseball team was defeated, 11-2, at No. 4 Vanderbilt on Tuesday night at Charles Hawkins Field. Eastern Illinois drops to 3-13 on the year.
The Panthers broke open a scoreless game in the third inning, taking a 1-0 lead on a Frankie Perrone solo home run.
The Commodores (16-2) battled back to score eight runs on six hits and one error in the fifth inning to make the score 8-1. EIU cut its deficit to six (8-2) in the top of the next frame on a Mitch Gasbarro solo home run before Vanderbilt added two runs on three hits and one error in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Rhett Wiseman hit a RBI single up the middle in the eighth inning, driving in the final run of the game for Vanderbilt and making the score 11-2.
Vanderbilt had six more hits (12-6) than EIU and left four more runners on base (7-3). The Panthers had three errors in the contest while the Commodores did not commit any miscues.
Chase Thurston (0-2) took the loss for EIU, surrendering four hits and four runs in 4.2 innings of action. He also had one strikeout and issued two walks.
Walker Buehler (3-1) earned the win for Vanderbilt as the sophomore pitcher threw seven strikeouts in five innings of work. He allowed five hits and two runs on the night.
Perrone led the Panther offense as he went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run and a RBI. Wiseman led the Commodores at the plate, going 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run. Bryan Reynolds added two hits, one RBI and two runs for Vanderbilt.
JACKSONVILLE STATE 9, UAB 5 (10)
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Griff Gordon and Stephen Bartlett each had three hits to lead Jacksonville State to a 9-5 win over UAB in the 10th inning as the two teams completed Tuesday's halted game.
The two teams resumed a game that began 24 hours earlier in Birmingham, but was halted in the seventh inning due to heavy rains that moved over Regions Park. The teams resumed action in Jacksonville on Wednesday since both teams were already scheduled to play.
JSU's Travis Stout (1-0) tossed two innings of relief to pick up his first win of the season, while UAB's Sam Kelley gave up all four runs in the extra frame to suffer the loss for the Blazers.
The Gamecocks (10-5) held a 4-3 lead when the game resumed, but the Blazers battled back in the home half of the eighth inning to tie the game after Nathan Vincent scored on Ryan Prinzing's infield grounder to tie the game at 4-4.
Jax State answered in the ninth inning to take a 5-4 lead after Gavin Golsan scored on Gordon's RBI single to right field, but UAB (13-4) managed to tie the game in the bottom of the inning after Ivan De Jesus scored on a sacrifice fly to force extra innings.
The Gamecocks then scored four runs - all with two outs - on three hits as Chase Silvani, Eddie Mora-Loera and Peyton Williams each had a RBI to give JSU a 9-5 lead. Stout then recorded the final three outs to secure the win for the Gamecocks.
Golsan finished with a pair of hits and scored a career-high four runs to go along with the three hits from Gordon and Bartlett as the Gamecocks finished with 14 hits in the game.
