MARSHALL 3, EASTERN ILLINOIS 0
CHARLESTON, Ill. - Marshall scored a goal midway through the opening half and then tacked on two insurance goals in the second half to beat Eastern Illinois, 3-0, on Friday afternoon. EIU returns to action Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. against Louisiana Tech.,
Kelly Culicerto scored the first of her two goals in the 25th minute as she headed home a ball served into the middle of the goal box by Lia Foster. The kick by Foster came following a foul.
Culicerto scored the second Marshall goal off a free kick following a penalty just outside the goal box. The unassisted goal came in the 55th minute.
Marshall added its final goal in the 67th minute as Sydney Arnold scored on a breakaway goal beating EIU keeper Emily Hinton to the low left of the net. Arnold's goal was assisted by Erin Simmons.
Hinton had eight saves facing 11 Marshall shots on goal. Thundering Herd goalkeeper Lizzie Kish had two saves.
EIU fell to 0-3 on the year. Marshall improved to 1-1-1.
MURRAY STATE 2, GEORGIA STATE 1
MURRAY, Ky. - Harriet Withers scored back-to-back goals less than five minutes apart to lift the Murray State women’s soccer team past Georgia State, 2-1, on Friday afternoon at Cutchin Field in Murray.
Georgia State (0-2-1) wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard in the match, as Margaret Bruemmer scored on a corner kick in the fourth minute. The goal came on the third consecutive corner kick by Bruemmer, over the span of 1:09, and bent around the near side of the goal before clanging off the far post and going in.
The score would remain at 1-0 for the halftime break, as neither team was able find the back of the net in the final 41 minutes of the opening stanza. The Racers (1-1), however, did have their chances as they outshot the Panthers, 10-5, in the frame.
In the second half, Withers finally broke through for Murray State in the 65th minute when she knocked in Julie Mooney’s rebound to tie the game at one. Then, less than four minutes later, the freshman from Australia scored the would-be winning goal when she followed her own shot, that hit the post, to put the Racers on top for good at 2-1.
Withers finished the game with five total shots, four of which went on target, while Julie Mooney had six shots with two going on goal. The Racers finished the afternoon with 19 totals shots and eight on goal, compared to 10 and five, respectively, by the Panthers. Savannah Haberman also did work for Murray State in the match, as she made four saves and allowed just one goal over a full 90 minutes of action.
On Sunday, MSU will begin five-match road swing when it travels to Dayton. Kick-off between the Racers and the Flyers at Baujan Field in Dayton is scheduled for 1 p.m. EDT/12 p.m. CDT.
EASTERN KENTUCKY 7, ALABAMA A&M 0
RICHMOND, Ky. - Junior Amani Thomas scored 21 seconds into the game and the Eastern Kentucky University soccer team never looked back, as the Colonels defeated visiting Alabama A&M, 7-0, in their home opener on Friday afternoon at EKU Soccer Field.
With the win, the surging Colonels improve to 2-0-0 on the young season.
Thomas’s goal – which came off a pinpoint cross from senior Kaylynn Brown – was the fastest in EKU soccer history, and the seven goals scored by the team were the most in a single game in program history.
After Thomas’s quick strike kick-started the Colonel attack, sophomore Cassie Smith – EKU’s leading scorer from a year ago – got in on the action in the fifth minute, rebounding a missed header by freshman Emmi Carroll and scoring to make it 2-0.
Junior Dani Cant added a final first-half goal in the 39th minute, burying a shot a shot from the right side that hit the far post and in to send the Colonels into the locker room at halftime up 3-0.
EKU opened the second half eerily similar to the way it opened the first, as Smith scored her second goal of the game from the center of the box just 40 seconds after the whistle.
Five minutes later, Carroll – the hero of EKU’s season-opening win at Western Carolina – got in on the action, scoring an unassisted goal from the center of the box to make it 5-0 in favor of Eastern.
In the 72nd minute, senior Ashley Ryan took a cross from freshman Jordan Foster and scored to make it 6-0. Finally, with seven minutes to play in regulation, Cant capped the scoring streak with her second goal of the day, dribbling it by the AAMU goalkeeper and scoring from close range to make it 7-0.
EKU outshot AAMU, 32-3, on the day.
Freshman Anna Hall and junior Erika Wolfer split time in goal to earn the clean sheet.
Making her first-career start at outside back, freshman Makenna Sullivan played all 90 minutes of the win to lead an EKU defense that has not allowed a goal through 180 minutes of play.
Senior center back Emily D’Italia only sat for one minute of the game and also played a huge role in the shutout.
In all, 20 Colonels were able to see the field during the win.
EKU returns to action on Sunday in a tough test at Evansville. First touch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. ET.
SOUTH ALABAMA 5, TENNESSEE TECH 0
TROY, Ala. - Trekking away from Cookeville for the first time this season, the Tennessee Tech soccer team was tripped up 5-0 to South Alabama in the first of two in the 2014 Trojan Classic hosted by Troy University.
The matchup against a stellar Jaguar (2-1-0) club that captured last season's Sun Belt Conference Championship en route to earning a bid in the NCAA Tournament unfolded into a tale of two halves. For the first 43 minutes and change, the Golden Eagles (0-2-0) held strong defensively in keeping an aggressive South Alabama attack that produced 27 total shots off the board, until a late score changed the tide right before intermission.
With just over a minute remaining in the first stanza, Jaguar junior Jordan Duncan split the pipes on a feed from freshman Danielle Henley to result in the first goal of the afternoon.
The Golden Eagles regrouped at the break, continuing to fend off the aggression of the Jaguars for the first 12 minutes of the second half, until South Alabama struck again in the 59th minute. This time it was freshman Charde Hannah that found an open slot in the bottom left corner of the net for the Tupelo, Miss. native's second score of the season, using a Rio Hardy through ball to push the Jaguars advantage to 2-0.
South Alabama would tack on three additional goals before it was all said and done, including two more from Jordan Duncan, one in the 77th minute off of a counterattack and one in the 87th minute off a Sophie Haywood pass to give the 5-foot-6 forward a hat trick on the afternoon. The aforementioned Danielle Henley produced the other Jaguar goal, finding the back of the net in the 76th minute to wrap up a three-point performance.
The Golden Eagles played 16 in the affair, including five that played the entire 90 minutes in seniors Rebecca Toler, Katie Phillips, and Kesley McGohan, junior Taylor Sutton, and freshman Mary Francis Hoots, while sophomore Kalyn Pruett and freshman Cassidy Ortman played in at least 75 minutes of action.
Rebecca Toler started in her second consecutive match in net to begin the season, recording nine saves throughout the tilt.
Tech will be right back at it on Sunday, concluding the 2014 Trojan Classic with a matchup against the host team Troy. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT.
BELMONT 1, INDIANA STATE 1
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Belmont women's soccer team (2-0-1) unleashed a flurry of shots in hopes to recording their third consecutive win on Friday afternoon at Rose Park. Instead, the Bruins battled to a double overtime 1-1 stalemate with visiting Indiana State (1-1-1).
The Bruins wasted little time in only the fourth meeting between the programs, attacking the ISU goal within seconds of the opening whistle. Six minutes in and BU had already tallied shots from junior Taylor Smith (Atlanta, Ga.), sophomore Meg Howard (Brentwood, Tenn.), and freshmen Heather Ferrari (Duluth, Ga.) and Belicia Mendiola (McKinney, Texas). Belmont saw several near misses as the half went on even as Indiana State settled down and got into the contest. However, neither was able to find the back of the net in the first stanza.
The second half was similar with a frenzied pace as the teams battled in the middle third, looking to control tempo and game speed. ISU would strike first, finding the back of the net in the 47th minute. The Bruins fired back less than seven minutes later, when Howard drilled the equalizer with help from Smith.
The contest went into high gear as both dug in their heels looking to find the gamewinner before the end of regulation. BU ramped up its attack of the net but was unsuccessful in finding the back of the net. The Sycamores looked to have the game in hand in the 76th minute but the goal was waved off when they were called offsides. Howard made a stunning attempt to take the match but her shot skimmed the left post in the 88th minute forcing the teams into overtime.
Despite strong play on both sides of the ball, both teams were unfruitful in both overtime periods, handing both squads their first tie of the season.
BU dominated offensively, outshooting the Sycamores, 35-10. The Bruins also held the advantage in corner kicks, 8-4.
Howard led the way for Belmont with a game-high nine shots, including the equalizer in the 54th minute of play. Smith recorded seven shots on the day.
Junior Lindsey Espe (LaCanada, Calif.) went the distance between the posts, logging 120 minutes and snagging six saves.
IUPUI 2, SIUE 1
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - SIUE women's soccer lost its first game of the weekend to IUPUI 2-1.
The Cougars opened up the game strong with a header from junior Cassidy Sherman in the 35th minute. The goal was assisted by senior Michelle Auer.
IUPUI answered in the 41st minute with a goal by Tori Minnich. The Jaguars opened up the second half with a goal from Alyssa Fox.
The Cougars outshot the Jaguars 16-13. Junior goalkeeper Jennifer Pelley recorded six saves.
The Cougars continue their road trip Sunday at 12 p.m. against Purdue.
SAMFORD 3, JACKSONVILLE STATE 2
JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - The Jacksonville State soccer team put together a second half comeback, but Samford thwarted the Gamecocks' late surge to escape with a 3-2 decision on Friday night in the 2014 home debut for JSU.
JSU dropped to 1-2 on the season, while the Bulldogs picked up their first win of the season after falling in their first two matches of the season. Jax State looks to bounce back in the first home weekend of the season as it will host Mississippi Valley State on Sunday. Match time is set for 1 p.m. at the JSU Soccer Field.
Samford weathered the JSU pressure early before creating scoring chances of its own. SU posted all three goals within a nine-minute frame in the first half. Emily Jones netted the first goal at the 25 minute mark as her shot from the left side came off the hands of JSU goalkeeper Meara Johnson and in the back of the net. The Bulldogs took advantage of a free kick from a penalty at the top of the box and headed the ball past Johnson. Heather Lacy was credited with the second goal of the night. SU registered the eventual game-winner in the 34th minute as Jermaine Seoposenwe drilled a ball from the top of the penalty box for the score.
JSU was credited with six shots in the first 45 minutes, while SU turned in nine of its 15 total shots in the opening half. The Gamecocks started creating chances in the second half and put the Bulldogs on their heels in the second half. JSU, who finished with 16 total shots, had 10 in the second half.
Red-shirt junior Courtney Hurt tallied the first of two second-half Jax State goals in the 64th minute. After the Bulldogs were pressing in the JSU end of the field, sophomore Chelsi Bender cleared the ball to Kelsey Bright, who led Hurt on a great feed to get past the SU defense and knock it past the keeper.
Bright added to her stat line with her second goal of the season after she took the deflection off of a keeper save after a JSU attempt to knock it in the back of the net.
JSU had multiple chances in the final 14 minutes, but could not get the equalizer. Senior Lindsey Jackson and Hurt paced the Gamecock offense with four shots each.
ALABAMA 5, AUSTIN PEAY 0
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Southeastern Conference foe Alabama proved too much for Austin Peay State University women's soccer team to overcome, Friday, with the Lady Govs dropping a 5-0 decision at Morgan Brothers Field.
With the loss, Austin Peay drops to 1-2-0 on the young season. Alabama improves to 2-1-0.
The Crimson Tide were relentless offensively, hounding the Lady Govs with 24 shots. Austin Peay was held without a shot in the first half and did not attempt their first until 30 minutes remained in the contest.
Austin Peay limited Alabama for the first 15 minutes of the contest, but surrendered four goals over the next nine minutes. Merel van Dongen got the scoring started in the 18th minute, and was followed by Laura Lee Smith less than two minutes later.
Theresa Diederich (21st minute) and Hailey Brohaugh (24th) would add to Austin Peay's deficit. Alabama continually got bodies forward, resulting in multiple chances in the box against the Lady Govs defense, including Brohaugh's goal off a deflection.
Pia Rijsdijk put up the half's fifth goal with under a minute left, corralling a loose ball in the box and sliding it past a diving Nikki Filippone, who was forced to make seven saves in the first half alone.
The Lady Govs settled down in the second half, limiting the Crimson Tide to seven shots. Coming on to start the second half, sophomore Katie Emig made three saves and held Alabama scoreless.
Austin Peay strung together several opportunities but were thwarted time and again by Alabama during the final 45 minutes.
Freshman Mallory Burman lifted a shot wide in the 61st minute, the only attempt by Austin Peay on the evening.
The Lady Govs return to action Monday with a 7 p.m. kick against Lipscomb. That will be the finale of Austin Peay's three-match homestand before the Lady Govs travel to Murfreesboro for next weekend's Blue Raider Classic against Kennesaw State (4 p.m., Friday) and Middle Tennessee (5 p.m., Sunday).
SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 2, UMSL 0
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri scored twice in a 27-second span and a strong defensive effort held Missouri-St. Louis to just one shot as the Redhawks earned a 2-0 victory on Friday evening. An impressive crowd was in attendance for the match at Missouri National Guard Field at Houck Stadium.
The Redhawks (1-0) defense was stellar and held the Tritons to just one shot, which was saved by GK Kindra Lierz, who posted her first career shutout in her NCAA debut. Southeast had 12 total shots, including four on goal.
In the 74th minute, MF Torey Byrd was taken down in the box and then planted her penalty kick into the top left corner of the net to give Southeast a 1-0 advantage.

MOREHEAD STATE 3, UIC 1
CHICAGO, Ill. - Senior forward Jade Flory tallied all of the Morehead State soccer team's goals in a 3-1 victory over Illinois-Chicago on Friday night at Flames Field. The reigning Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year found the back of the net in the sixth, 28th and 37th minutes to help the Eagles build an early three-goal cushion.
MSU improves to 2-0-1 on the season, while UIC falls to 0-4.
Flory is in her second season at Morehead State after transferring from Youngstown State. She now has 17 goals and 39 points in just 25 contests at MSU. Flory converted on 3-of-4 shot attempts at UIC. Senior forward Macy Cobb was credited with one assist, while the other two goals were unassisted.
