The Mocs were engaged in a defensive battle in its season-opener at FBS Central Michigan, as the two teams combined for just 579 yards on the night. UTC jumped out to the 16-0 lead as Jacob Huesman and Tommy Hudson connected for two touchdowns, including a 70-yarder with 3:34 to play in the second quarter.  But the CMU defense would shutout Chattanooga the rest of the way and a 26-yard touchdown pass in the third quarterback put the Chippewas on top for good.
