VALPARAISO 3, EASTERN ILLINOIS 1
CHARLESTON, Ill. -
Eastern Illinois women’s soccer responded to an early injury to its starting goalkeeper but could not maintain the momentum as Valparaiso scored three second half goals to pull away for a 3-1 win Friday afternoon at Lakeside Field.

EIU dropped to 0-7-1 on the year and will travel to Chicago State on Sunday afternoon.  Valparaiso improved to 3-1-4 on the year.

EIU’s starting goalkeeper Kylie Morgan was injured in the 29th minute following a hard collision near the Panthers goal box.   The injury seemed to spark the Panthers as they scored one minute later.  Lindsey Marino scored as her header spun just over the goal line on a ball served into the box by Allie Lakie.

EIU would lead 1-0 at the half despite being outshot 6-1.   EIU would have only four shots for the match with the three in the second half coming in the final ten minutes.

Emily Hinton replaced Morgan in goal and made five saves.

Valpo tied the game in the 57th minute as Vanesa Abad touched in a cross in front of the goal.  The ball was sent in by April Cronin.

Cronin put the Crusaders ahead in the 66th minute with her header on an assist by Rita Craven.

Robin Wenzel added an insurance goal in the 80th minute as she stole a pass and scored on a breakaway goal with a flick just over the goalkeeper’s head.

EVANSVILLE 2, BELMONT 0
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
Despite a strong offensive effort, the Belmont women's soccer team (3-3-2) was unable to find the back of the net and rebound against visiting Evansville (6-3-2) on Friday afternoon.  The Bruins were held off by the Purple Aces, 2-0, in their non-conference finale.

In the first half, UE pushed against a stringent Bruin defense to find a way to score in the 16th minute off a corner kick.  Belmont didn't falter in the face of the deficit and ramped up its intensity on the hunt for the equalizer for the remainder of the half.  With 13 minutes left on the clock, BU earned a free kick off a midfield foul.  Freshman Belicia Mendiola (McKinney, Texas) fired at the goal but her attempt, one of the team's best of the half, was blocked in the box enabling the Purple Aces to carry their 1-0 advanage into the locker room.

Belmont carried its aggressive level of play into the second stanza with seniors Alison Alcott (Dallas, Texas) and Elise DeTrude (Carmel, Ind.) notching back to back shots on goal in the first three and a half minutes.  Ten minutes later, another BU offensive flurry, including a rocket by junior Emily Proud (Knoxville, Tenn.) that had to be punched into the crossbar to be stopped from crossing the goal line, fell just shy of producing a goal.  Evansville answered back with an insurance goal in the 74th minute and then used the clock to its advantage for the waning minutes to hold on for the win.

Belmont held the advantage in shots, 13-2, while Evansville led in corner kicks, 5-2, scoring off of two of them.

Junior Emily Proud (Knoxville, Tenn.) led BU with three shots, followed by senior Taylor Smith (Atlanta, Ga.) and freshman Tara Austin (Beaumont, Texas) with two apiece.

Between the posts, senior Megan Byrd (Gurnee, Ill.) and junior Lindsey Espe (LaCanada, Calif.) split time.  Espe finished the contest with two saves.

Belmont returns to action on Friday, September 26 at E.S. Rose Park for its OVC home opener.  The Bruins host Morehead State beginning at 4 p.m.

WRIGHT STATE 5, TENNESSEE TECH 0
DAYTON, Ohio -
The Tennessee Tech soccer team began its weekend trip up north in tough fashion, falling 5-0 to Wright State in a match that saw five different Raiders (2-6-0) find the back of the net on 22 shots.

The Golden Eagles (2-6-0) fell victim to a pair of strong spurts by WSU as the Raiders caught fire towards the end of the first half with two goals in the final 20 minutes, before mirroring a similar stretch to begin the second with two scores in the first 15 minutes of the period.

Scoreless into the 26th minute, freshman Bryce Hueber split the pipes for the Cincinnati, Ohio native's second goal of the 2014 campaign with fellow freshman Ellie Ganz credited with the assist. Freshmen production would go on to be a theme in the contest after freshman Megan Wilcox scored in the 38th minute, using a Paige Aguilera assist to give WSU a 2-0 advantage.

In total, five different freshmen would tally a point for the Raiders, including the aforementioned Ellie Ganz, and Stevee Hazel who would collect a goal in the second half, part of a three-goal stanza for Wright State. Ganz kicked off the second-half scoring with a goal in the 53rd minute, while Hazel's score came just before the final whistle in the 89th minute. Sandwiched in between the pair of net finders was an unassisted Natalie Sedlock goal, the only Raider to score that wasn't a freshman.

Appearing in her second match of the year, sophomore Allison Barlow made five second-half saves for the Golden Eagles, splitting the tilt evenly with senior Rebecca Toler who made three stops in the first period. Across the way, the junior tandem of Kelsey Deal and Halle Pyle teamed up to blank TTU, recording just one save in the process.

Tech will try to rebound on Sunday, traveling to Evansville to take on the Purple Aces at 11 a.m. CT.

MURRAY STATE 3, IUPUI 1
MURRAY, Ky. -
Julie Mooney scored the 10th hat trick in Murray State women’s soccer history Friday to lead the Racers to a 3-1 victory over the IUPUI Jaguars at Cutchin Field in Murray, Kentucky.

The Racers (3-5) have won back-to-back games and improved to 2-1 at home. The Jaguars (2-5-2) have lost back-to-back matches.

Mooney’s nifty footwork was a result of a constant attacking offense that harried IUPUI from the opening kick.

The senior from St. Peters, Missouri and All-Ohio Valley Conference pick as a junior, got the Racers on the board first with a goal in the 37th minute. Taylor Stevens assisted and the Racers had a 1-0 lead which they carried into the half.

After IUPUI tied the game with a goal from Tori Minnich in the 55th minute, Mooney was at it again with her second goal. Stevens assisted again as MSU led 2-1 in the 61st minute.

The Racers put the game away with Mooney’s third goal in the 83rd minute on an assist from Pavlina Nepokojova.
The Racers finished the day with a 17-5 advantage in shots and had seven shots on goal.

MSU goalkeeper Shelby Haworth improved to 2-3 and faced only five shots, giving one goal and making one save.

The hat trick gives Mooney six goals in eight games this season for the Racers and 22 in her career. She is tied for fourth place all-time with Krista Muilkens (2005-08) and one behind Jackie Thomas (2000-03). Theresa Reedy (2001-04) has the all-time lead with 34 and Rebekah Clay (2005-08) is in second with 24.

The Racers play their final non-conference match at home Sunday at noon against Northern Kentucky. Game time is noon at Cutchin Field.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 3, ARKANSAS STATE 0
JONESBORO, Ark. -
Southeast Missouri (3-3) F Breana Beine tied a school-record with three goals in a 3-0 shutout victory at Arkansas State (2-6) on Friday evening. Beine scored three times in the first 33 minutes, posting the 10th hat trick in program history and first since F Ashley Runion achieved the feat on Aug. 27, 2010 vs. Alabama A&M.

Southeast outshot the Red Wolves 17-11 including a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. GK Kindra Lierz made two saves as she earned her third shutout of the season.

Beine notched her first career hat trick, third multi-goal performance as an NCAA player and first since joining Southeast prior to her junior season. It marked her first multi-goal output since scoring twice on Oct. 23, 2011 vs. Drake when she competed for Evansville. She also added two scores vs. Northern Iowa on Oct. 24, 2010 as a member of the Purple Aces. She now has 16 career NCAA goals, which puts her two ahead of F/D Erin Shulman for most among active Redhawks. Beine leads the team with four goals on the season.

Just seven minutes into the game, Beine opened up the scoring as she beat the Red Wolves GK Sara Wicks on a contested shot near the front edge of the goalie box. MF/F Kasey Crowden added her first assist of the season on the goal.

Beine extended the lead to 2-0 in the 22nd minute when she scored off of a corner kick from F Natasha Minor, who was credited with her team-best second assist of the year.

In the 33rd minute, Beine earned the hat trick after receiving a pass from MF Torey Byrd to push the advantage to 3-0. For Byrd, it marked her second assist of the year, tying Minor for the team-lead.

MF Kaitlin Kuznacic and Minor tied for a game-best with five shots. Beine and Minor both registered a game-high three shots on goal.

D Lauren Crimi led Arkansas State with three shots, including two on goal. GK Amanda Lee relieved Wicks after halftime and made four saves in the second half.

Southeast returns to play with the Ohio Valley Conference opener at 3 p.m. on Sept. 26 at Eastern Illinois.

UT MARTIN 1, KENNESAW STATE 0
KENNESAW, Ga. -
The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s soccer team picked up its first road victory while snapping a three-game losing streak with a 1-0 victory at Kennesaw State on Friday evening.

The Skyhawks (5-3) picked up their first win in the last four contests with a goal by junior Rianna Jarrett in the 71st minute. Despite being outshot by Kennesaw State by a margin on 17-8, the Skyhawks would convert on one of their four shots on goal to notch the game winner and get back to their winning ways.

Jarrett led all Skyhawks with a game-tying five shot attempts on the evening, converting on her fourth attempt of the night with a header to score her fifth goal of the season off an assists from Amy Maksimowicz. Maksimowicz would lob a cross into the box, setting up Jarrett with an opportunity from six yards to score her second game-winning goal in her young Skyhawk career. Dominika Conc, Alyssa Curtis and Ellie Myrick also tallied shot attempts on the night.

Defensively the Skyhawks proved to be tough once again, notching their fourth shutout of the season. Senior goalkeeper Mariah Klenke (5-3) continued to show why she’s the school’s record holder in several categories, notching her fourth shutout of the season and her 19th career clean sheet. Klenke tallied four saves on the evening, opposed to the Owls 17 total shot attempts. The shutout drops her season goals against average to 0.62.

Kennesaw State (2-6-1) was paced by Marit Sandtroeen with five shot attempts, including one on goal. Cassidy Kemp wasn’t far behind, tallying four attempts of her own. Olivia Sturdivant tallied two saves in 90 minutes of action in addition to the one goal allowed.

SAMFORD 3, AUSTIN PEAY 1
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -
The scoring drought ended for Austin Peay State University women's soccer Friday night, but the Lady Govs still came out on the wrong side of a 3-1 decision against Samford at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field.

Austin Peay remains winless in September, falling to 1-7-0 overall on the season. Samford moves to 5-4-0.

Sophomore Gina Fabbro got the scoring started for the Lady Govs in this one, heading one home off a lob into the box from senior Claire Pultz in the fourth minute. For Fabbro, the tally is her season's first and career's eighth, putting her one behind Jocelyn Murdoch for 10th all-time. It also stopped an epic goal-less streak for the Lady Govs, who had gone 461:49 since their last goal.

Unfortunately, it would be a short-lived advantage for Austin Peay as the Bulldogs would find the equalizer in the 19th minute. Taylor Borman volleyed in a cross from Hallie Georgi, past freshman Lindsey Todd, who got the start for the Lady Govs.

Amanda Abbott got the go-ahead and insurance tallies on the board for Samford. In the 30th minute, she collected a rebound from a Todd save and deposited it into the lower left corner, and followed that up just two minutes later by banging home a cross from Jermaine Seoposenwe.

As has been the trend in 2014, head coach Kelley Guth opted to make a change in net after halftime, with junior Nikki Filippone answering the call. The Woodbridge, Ontario native responded with four second-half saves to help the Lady Govs keep it close.

However, despite five shot attempts and three that forced saves from Samford keeper Anna Maddox over the final 45 minutes, Austin Peay could not chip away at the Bulldogs advantage.

Todd was saddled with the loss despite making three saves for Austin Peay. Maddox made four saves total for the win.

The Lady Govs start Ohio Valley Conference play and conclude a three-game homestand their next time out when Austin Peay hosts Eastern Kentucky 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 26 at Morgan Brothers Field.
