MOREHEAD STATE 2, AUSTIN PEAY 1
MOREHEAD, Ky. -
The Morehead State soccer team played 10 on 11 for nearly 50 minutes, but still managed to notch a 2-1 victory over Ohio Valley Conference opponent Austin Peay on Sunday afternoon at Jayne Stadium.

The Eagles improve to 6-2-4 overall, 1-0-1 in conference action and 4-0-0 at home, while the Governors slip to 2-8-0 overall, 1-1-0 in league play and 0-3-0 on the road.

Junior defender Kimberly Golden put MSU on the scoreboard in the 53rd minute with her third goal of 2014. The score, which was the second shot after a corner kick, came off assists from senior defender Elizabeth Tresnak and senior midfielder Caity Fox.

Austin Peay sophomore midfielder Alyssa Plowman evened the match less than three minutes later. She posted her first goal of the year on a broken play after a free kick.

Senior forward Macy Cobb tallied the eventual game-winner for the Eagles in the 79th minute. She registered her third goal of the campaign after a long cross from junior defender Kelsey Patera and short pass across the box from senior forward Jade Flory.

Morehead State tallied a 24-9 shots advantage, including 12-6 on goal. Cobb and Flory posted five attempts each for the Eagles. MSU also registered a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

One of Morehead State's student-athletes was issued a red card with less than five minutes to play in the first half. That caused the Eagles to go the rest of the way down a player.

MURRAY STATE 3, JACKSONVILLE STATE 0
MURRAY, Ky. -
The Murray State Racers tied the school record Sunday with their fifth consecutive victory in a 3-0 win in Ohio Valley Conference women's soccer at Cutchin Field in Murray, Kentucky.

Scoreless until the final minute of the first half, the Racers built on a 1-0 lead and carried it to their fifth-straight win, matching the team from 2005. MSU can break the record Friday when they play SIUE at Korte Stadium in Edwardsville, Illinois.

The game was close to being a scoreless first half when the Racers took advantage of a loose pass with under a minute to go. Aaron Lankster intercepted a pass outside the box and sent a pass to the back line where Pavilina Nepokojova sent a bullet shot across the mouth of the JSU goal. The ball ricocheted off a JSU player and into the net with 48-seconds before the buzzer.

In the early second half, MSU peppered the JSU goal with quality shots and twice hit the cross bar before Taylor Stevens gave MSU a 2-0 lead in the 56th minute. MSU had a corner kick and Stevens settled a deflected ball in front of the net and blasted in her first goal of the season. Steven's second goal of the day was off another corner kick in the 69th minute on a header. Nepokojova assisted on both goal as she initiated the corner kick.

Shelby Haworth recorded her third shutout in eight starts and improved to 5-3. She made five saves and early in the game stopped a point-blank attempt.

The Racers outshot JSU 14-9 on the day and had an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal.

MSU improved to 8-3-1 all-time against Jacksonville State and have won the last three meetings.

The Racers are 5-1 home this season and return home (Oct. 10 & 12) when they host Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky.

BELMONT 0, EASTERN KENTUCKY 0
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
For the second time in as many ties, the Belmont women's soccer team (3-3-4, 0-0-2 OVC) was forced into extra periods for a decision on the opening weekend of Ohio Valley Conference play.  The Bruins battled to a 0-0 double overtime draw with visiting Eastern Kentucky (2-8-1, 0-1-1 OVC) on Sunday afternoon at Rose Park.

The Bruins dominated possession and the tempo of the contest form the opening whistle, pushing to earn a corner kick in the first 19 seconds of action.  BU continued its attack and earned two more corners in the first two and a half minutes.  Belmont continued to lead the way in time of possession throughout the first stanza but the Colonels had sparks of attack.  BU peppered the Colonel goal late into the first half with shots from all over the field that were just barely off the mark or forced their keeper to hustle to make the save.

EKU tried to take a page from the BU playbook to open the second half with an aggressive start that ended with them being called offsides.  However, the Bruins rallied and regained possession and control of the matchup.  One of Belmont's best chances came in the 83rd minute when the team managed to pull the EKU goalkeeper out of the net.  Sophomore Meg Howard (Brentwood, Tenn.) fired toward the empty net but her attempt went just wide of the right bar.  The Bruins kept up the pressure but was unable to find the back of the net through 90 minutes and battled into their fifth overtime contest of the season.

The overtime periods were all Belmont. The Bruins outshot EKU, 11-0, through the extra 20 minutes, forcing EKU's keeper to stop half of the attempts.  Despite the onslaught of shots, Belmont was unable to get anything by Anna Hall, who finished the day with 14 saves.

BU dominated in shots, 27-6, and corner kicks, 10-1.  The Bruins also forced the EKU keeper to record 14 saves.
Junior Cassie Blase (Waukesha, Wisc.) led the Bruins with a game-high six shots, followed by Howard with four.  Junior Lindsey Espe (LaCañada, Calif.) was stellar between the posts, going the distance and tallying three saves on the day.

SIUE 3, EASTERN ILLINOIS 1
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -
SIUE women's soccer opened their conference season with a 3-1 victory over Eastern Illinois.

Freshman Mariah Vollmer scored her first career goal in the second minute of the game. From the top of the box, she netted a ball to the far right post. The goal was assisted by freshman Emily Grahl.

The Panthers answered with a goal of their own in the 19th minute from Megan Radloff.

The Cougars were able to regain the lead in the second half with a goal from Michelle Auer. The goal, which was scored from 13 yards out to the far right post, was again assisted by Grahl. The goal is Auer's fourth of the season, which is the most in a season for the senior.

SIUE sealed the victory with a goal in the 84th minute from Kayla Delgado. An initial shot from Delgado hit the cross bar and was followed by several SIUE players. Alexandra Johnson and Ashlyn Walter both assisted Delgado's touch in for her second goal of the season.

SIUE dominated the game with 21 shots to EIU's 5. Goalkeeper Jennifer Pelley ended the game with two saves.

UT MARTIN 5, TENNESSEE TECH 1
MARTIN, Tenn. -
The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team wasted little time getting back to its winning ways, using a five goal performance to dismantle Tennessee Tech in the team’s Ohio Valley Conference home opener by a score of 5-1 at Skyhawk Field.

The Skyhawks (7-4, 1-1 OVC) received a big performance off the bench from sophomore Ellie Myrick who posted two goals on five shots attempts. The two goals marked the first multi-goal performance of Myrick’s young career. Rianna Jarrett tallied a game-high 12 shot attempts, including five shots on goal while tallying one goal. Myrick and Jarrett were joined in the scoring column by Saphyra Coombs-James and Eva Heller’s first half goals.

Mariah Klenke picked up the victory, posting 90 minutes between the posts. Klenke tallied three saves on the day while facing six shot attempts on the afternoon, despite allowing one goal.

Tennessee Tech falls to 2-9 overall and 0-2 in the OVC after giving up five goals on the day. The Golden Eagles were able to get on the board in the 63rd minute off a goal by Taylor Blazei and an assist from Zoie Hensley. Cassidy Ortman and Abi Gearing tied for the team lead with two shot attempts. Rebecca Toler (2-8) allowed all five goals while tallying six saves.

The Skyhawks would come out as the game’s aggressors, tallying 20 shot attempts in the first half alone, including their first attempt just 14 seconds into the game. The Skyhawks outshot the Golden Eagles 10-1 before Coombs-James snuck the game’s first goal into the back of the net in the 23rd minute. Ashlie Watson tallied her first of two assists on the day after finding Coombs-James just five-yards out as the sophomore sailed her attempt into the back of the net. The goal was Coombs-James’ fourth goal of the season.

UT Martin would get another score on the board just before the halftime break as Lucy Pater found freshman Eva Heller for her second goal of the season at the 44:48 mark of the opening period.

Tennessee Tech would make bring the score within one in the 63rd minute with a goal by Blazei. Hensley would sail a lead pass to Blazei from midfield, allowing the striker a 1-on-1 showdown with Klenke which the Golden Eagles would win.

With the lead cut to just one, the Skyhawks would spring to life by scoring three goals in less than three minutes of play beginning in the 65th minute. Senior Alyssa Curtis would sail a cross into the box, finding Myrick who would take the pass off her chest before placing a strike into the right side of the net.

The home squad would strike once again, this time off the foot of Jarrett. Less than one minute after Myrick’s strike, Jarrett would sail a 25-yard missile from the right sideline into the net, giving the Skyhawks their fourth goal of the game. The goal also moved Jarrett into a tie for the team lead with six goals on the season.

Myrick would wrap up the scoring trifecta in the 68th minute off of a pass from Watson. Watson would dump a long cross into the box, finding Myrick just left of the goal for a clear shot into the net for her second strike of the afternoon and third of the season.
