SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 2, UC DAVIS 0
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Southeast Missouri defeated UC Davis 2-0 in the first game of the Falcon Invitational at Cadet Soccer Stadium at the United States Air Force Academy. D Ashley Brendel and F Breana Beine scored goals for the Redhawks while GK Kindra Lierz notched her second consecutive shutout.
The Redhawks (2-0) got out to an early 1-0 lead over the Aggies (3-2) when Brendel scored her first career goal in just the third minute of play on a top-shelf shot from 18 yards out. Sophomore Natasha Minor assisted on the score. Minor has registered at least one point in six of her last eight games.
Senior F Breana Beine extended the lead to 2-0 with a goal in the 69th minute on a breakaway from 20 yards out to the right post. It marked Beine's first goal of the season, third in her Southeast career and 13th as an NCAA player. All three of her goals in a Redhawks uniform have come in the last six games.
Lierz made five saves, including four in the first half. She has registered two straight shutouts to begin her college career.
Southeast and UC Davis both finished with seven shots in the contest. Beine led the way with three shots on goal while Brendel added two on frame.
The Redhawks wrap up the weekend tournament with a Sunday afternoon matchup at Northern Colorado. Start time is scheduled for 3 p.m. central at Jackson Stadium in Greeley.
TENNESSEE TECH 1, GEORGIA STATE 0
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - A goal early in the second half proved to be the difference Friday afternoon, as the Tennessee Tech soccer team stamped its place in the win column for the first time this season with a 1-0 victory over Georgia State (0-4-1) in front of a near capacity crowd at Tech Soccer Field.
After the two clubs played scoreless over the first 45 minutes, the Golden Eagles (1-3-0) came out swinging in the second half, wasting no time in jumping out to a 1-0 lead. Six minutes and 15 seconds into the period, sophomore Abi Gearing buried one past Panther junior keeper Christa Fox for her second goal of the season, capitalizing on an initial feed from senior Kelsey McGohan to freshman Zoie Hensley, before Hensley connected with Gearing for the score. Both McGohan and Hensely were credited with assists on the play.
Four matches into the season, Gearing has equaled her goal output of last season with the pair of scores.
Locked up in a defensive battle in the first half, senior goalkeeper Rebecca Toler set the tempo early, stopping Georgia State junior Callie O'Connor after O'Connor found herself alone with just Toler to beat a mere two minutes into the match.
The brilliant sliding save was one of three made in the first half by the Collierville, Tenn. native, including a Panther second chance effort midway through the period after the initial rip slammed right off the post, before senior Whitney Ravan corralled in the rebound, firing a shot that was smacked away by Toler.
The 5-foot-9 goalkeeper would end up saving all six shots that came her way for her fifth career shutout to put her in a tie with Kaitlyn Thacker (09) for the fourth most blankings in Tech history.
The Golden Eagles will look to make it back-to-back victories before the weekend concludes, welcoming Western Carolina into Tech Soccer Field on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.
KENNESAW STATE 1, AUSTIN PEAY 0
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Austin Peay (1-4-0) fell to Kennesaw State, 1-0, in the opening game of the Blue Raider Classic. The Lady Govs have now been held without a goal in each of its four regular-season losses and in both exhibition matches. Kennesaw State improves to 2-2-1.
The Lady Govs were held without a shot during the first 45 minutes, with the Owls taking 12 in that time, including five that found their way on frame. However, junior keeper Nikki Filippone was able to make the stop on each Kennesaw State attempt in the first half.
Freshman Kirstin Robertson finally took Austin Peay's first shot in the 54th minute.
Kennesaw State broke through in the 56th minute. A Julia Nelson lob into the box found the foot of Marit Sandtroeen, who slipped in behind the Lady Govs defense and found herself all alone to deposit the goal beyond the outstretched hands of freshman Lindsey Todd, who came on at halftime for Filippone in net.
In the final 30 minutes, Austin Peay's offense kicked into gear, with the combination of freshmen Caroline Wistrom and Sophia Fabbro teaming with sophomore Gina Fabbro to get into the attacking third for multiple chances. The Lady Govs best opportunity to score came in the 61st minute, when the younger Fabbro found herself with a chance on net and no keeper to beat after a poor challenge. However, Fabbro was forced to race the ball and defenders to the end line and her touch was pushed wide of the net.
In all, Austin Peay was outshot 22-5 on the day. Over the last three matches, opponents have outshot the Lady Govs at a 4-to-1 clip (60-15).
Todd was saddled with her second loss, making one save but allowing the contest's lone goal. Olivia Sturdivant made two saves in victory for the Owls.
Austin Peay returns to Murfreesboro Sunday to close out the Classic against host Middle Tennessee. First kick is scheduled for 5 p.m.
UMKC 4, EASTERN ILLINOIS 1
CHARLESTON, Ill. - Chris Reed scored her second goal of the season midway through the first half but three UMKC second half goals lifted the visiting Kangaroos to a 4-1 victory over the Panthers on Friday afternoon at Lakeside Field.
EIU fell to 0-5 on the season and returns to action on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. against IUPUI. UMKC improved to 2-2-1.
Reed scored in the 23rd minute as she headed home a ball that was sent into the keeper by Meagan Radloff. UMKC goalkeeper Nina Tzianos made in initial stop but could not stop Reed’s follow up. It was Reed’s second goal this season both of them on assists by Radloff.
UMKC tied the game five minutes later on goal by Sarah Todd that came on a free kick from 22-yards out. The ball tipped off the fingers of EIU goalkeeper Kylie Morgan into the upper right corner of the net.
The Kangaroos took the lead in the 52nd minute on a goal by Alyssa Elver that came off a cross by Ellie Chadick. Chadick had goal of her own in the 55th minute on an assist by Olivia Hodison.
UMKC’s final goal came from Kara Priest with the assist by Elver and Nikki Lynch.
Tzianos made four saves before Megan Goetzinger took over with 17 minutes to go. Morgan made five saves for EIU.
CINCINNATI 9, EASTERN KENTUCKY 0
CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Eastern Kentucky University soccer team fell at Cincinnati, 9-0, on Friday night at Gettler Stadium.
The loss drops EKU to 2-2-0 on the year. The Bearcats improve to 3-1-0 with the win.
Eastern trailed 1-0 with just over 10 minutes to play in the first half; however, Megan Cravenor’s goal in the 33rd minute broke the game open and the Bearcats never looked back.
UC’s Vanessa Gilles added another goal in the 43rd minute – making the score 3-0 at the break – and UC tacked on six more second-half goals to pull away for the win.
Freshman Anna Hall and junior Erika Wolfer each saw time in goal for EKU and both made four saves on the night.
Sophomore Mikalya Brillon was the only Colonel to play all 90 minutes of the game, going the distance on the outside of EKU’s defense.
Junior Katie Bright and senior Ashley Ryan attempted the Colonels’ only shots on goal in the game.
EKU returns to action at Ohio on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
SAMFORD 2, BELMONT 0
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Belmont women's soccer team (2-1-1) was unable to bounce back from a deficit in the first half and was held off on the road on Friday night. The Bruins fell to Samford (3-2), 2-0, for their first loss of the 2014 campaign.
The Bruins attacked from the opening whistle, forcing the ball into the Samford portion of the field for the first few minutes of action. The Bulldogs answered back with a pair of great crosses but the Belmont back line intervened and broke up the passes. Samford continued to ramp up its efforts but was unable to coordinate its timing, recording four consecutive offsides calls. The teams settled into a mighty back and forth battle in the midfield for much of the half.
Freshman Tara Austin (Beaumont, Texas) fired a shot that looked destined to score, soaring over the fingertips of the SU goalkeeper, but her attempt banged into the corner of the crossbar in the 30th minute. Four minutes later, the Bulldogs would notch the first goal of the night on a bouncy, redirected ball.
BU opened the second stanza aggressively but it would be Samford who would strike first again, scoring just barely two minutes into the half. Ten minutes later, the Bruins heated up offensively with just barely missing the mark shots coming from sophomore Meg Howard (Brentwood, Tenn.), junior Cassie Blase (Waukesha, Wisc.) and senior Taylor Smith (Atlanta, Ga.).
Belmont upped its defensive effort and intensified its attack in hopes of getting on the board as the half wore on. A fiery attempt by junior Emily Proud (Knoxville, Tenn.) face up at the SU keeper was barely stopped in the 76th minute. Classmate Sydney Scheben (Union, Ky.) followed five minutes later with a shot that barely went left of the post. Despite drastically improving their shot output, the Bruins were unable to find the back of the net as Samford went on to take the contest, 2-0.
Howard led BU with two shots. Eight different Bruins also recorded a shot during the contest.
Senior newcomer Megan Byrd (Gurnee, Ill.) notched her first start of the season and finished with four saves.
Belmont returns to action on Sunday at E.S. Rose Park when it hosts Georgia State. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
JACKSONVILLE STATE 7, JACKSON STATE 0
JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - The Jacksonville State soccer team continued its scoring onslaught on Friday night with a 7-1 win over Jackson State at the JSU Soccer Field.
The six goal difference came on the heels of a 15-0 thumping of Mississippi Valley State last Sunday. The Gamecocks put together a four-goal output in the first 45 minutes to cruise past its second opponent from the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The Tigers of JSU entered the season as the defending SWAC Champions. The loss dropped the Tigers to 1-3-1 on the season, while Jax State improved to 3-2 overall with a trip to Tuscaloosa, Ala. on Sunday to face the Crimson Tide on the horizon. The Gamecocks and UA will face off at 7 p.m.
For the second consecutive match, redshirt junior Courtney Hurt nearly recorded a hat trick as the Huntsville, Ala.-native netted a pair of first-half goals to spark Jax State. Hurt beat the Tigers' goalkeeper on her first goal in the second minute of the contest before connecting on her fifth goal of the season in the 25th minute. She took a great feed from senior Lindsey Jackson to drill the ball in the back of the net from the left side.
Junior Kelsey Bright stated the scoring for Jax State with a goal 1:13 deep into the affair. Hurt was credited with the assist. The Gamecocks controlled the tempo and possessed the ball for most of the opening half. Jax State, who finished with 21 total shots, had 12 of those in the first half. Junior Briana Boutziouvis rounded out the scoring in the opening half in the 38th minute after taking a cross from freshman Kayla Thompson. The dish out by Thompson would be her first of two on the night as she helped create Jax State's six goal of the night by Mackenzie Bellows in the 63rd minute.
Senior Jackie Rush added her name in the goal-scoring category with a scoring play in the 48th minute. Jackson tallied her second assist on Rush's goal after crossing the ball from the right side for Rush to send the ball in to the back of the net. Sophomore turned in her first career goal with a header off of a corner kick by Nicola Domikovich in the 67th minute.
Freshman Caroline Robinson and sophomore Meara Johnson shared time in goal as Robinson earned the start. Robinson posted four saves, while Johnson dealt with more pressure from the Tigers and saved seven chances in the second half. The Tigers' lone goal came by way of a deep ball in the 74th minute. After just six shots in the first half, the Tigers finished with 11 in the second half.
The goal by JSU's Jalana Ellis snapped a streak of 209 minutes of scoreless action for the Gamecocks' opponents dating back to the second half of the Samford contest.
Sunday's contest at the Alabama Soccer Stadium will be aired on the SEC Network +, which is the online platform of the SEC Network.
MOREHEAD STATE 4, APPALACHIAN STATE 1
MOREHEAD, Ky. - Senior forward Jade Flory and sophomore forward Angela Black combined for three goals and two assists to help the Morehead State soccer team score a 4-1 victory over Sun Belt Conference opponent Appalachian State on Friday evening at Jayne Stadium.
Flory recorded Morehead State's first and last goals, with an assist in the middle. Black netted the Eagles' third score, with a helper on their final goal.
Flory, the reigning Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year, is up to five scores and two assists on the season. Black, who was last year's OVC Freshman of the Year, now has three goals and one helper. Both rank among the league leaders in multiple statistical categories.
The Eagles improve to 3-0-2, while the Mountaineers slip to 2-2-0. MSU was 0-4-1 after five matches in 2013 and didn't secure its third victory until Oct. 6.
Senior forward Macy Cobb scored Morehead State's other goal, in the 23rd minute, off an assist from senior midfielder Paige Weber. The Eagles posted advantages of 18-11 in shots, 6-5 in shots on goal and 6-2 in corner kicks. MSU is +27 in shots and +18 in SOG through five matches this year.
Junior goalkeeper Elizabeth Floyd registered four saves for Morehead State. She has played every minute in goal for the Eagles this season.
Senior defender Morgan Fancher tallied Appalachian State's only goal, while senior forward Julia Holz notched an assist on the play in the 17th minute.
Nearly 500 fans were on hand for the home opener at Jayne Stadium.
"I thought our atmosphere tonight was terrific, and our young ladies need that throughout the season," Lipka added. "I especially appreciate all of the other student-athletes who came out. That's one of the great things about Morehead State. We're one big athletics family."
Morehead State continues non-conference action on Sunday at Southeastern Conference opponent Kentucky. The 6 p.m. ET match, which will be played at the brand-new Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex, is part of the SEC Network Plus package and will be shown on ESPN3.com
FIU 1, MURRAY STATE 0
MIAMI, Fla. - A 65th-minute goal by Johanna Volz was all the offense Florida International needed, as the Murray State women’s soccer team fell to the Panthers, 1-0, at the FIU Soccer Stadium in Miami on Friday evening.
Neither team was able to score in the opening stanza, although Florida International enjoyed a 6-2 advantage in total shots. The Panthers were also able to place four shots on target in the frame, while Murray State was held to none.
In the second half, MSU was only outshot, 9-7, but placed three of those shots on goal, compared to only two by FIU. However, one defensive miscue proved to be the deciding factor in the match, when Scarlet Montoya fired in a cross from 10 yards out where Volz was able to pull it down and beat MSU’s Shelby Haworth from five yards out for the eventual game-winner.
Despite the 1-0 deficit, the Racers owned the last 10 minutes of the match, taking the only three shots during that time span. Rebecca Bjorkvall started the barrage in the 84th minute with a header that went high, and then followed it up less than a minute later with shot that went wide. However, nothing came closer for MSU than a shot from Julie minute with 38 seconds to go that hit off the post and nearly went in before being cleared by the keeper.
Bjorkvall finished the day with a team-high three shots with one going on goal, while Pavlina Nepokojova finished with two and one on target. Shelby Haworth did have a positive result in her collegiate debut as she allowed just one goal and made five saves over 90 minutes.
On Sunday, the Racers will make the trip across the panhandle to Fort Myers to face Florida Gulf Coast. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. EDT.
