BELMONT 0, GEORGIA STATE 0
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Belmont women's soccer team (2-1-2) battled to its first scoreless tie of the season on Sunday afternoon at Rose Park. The Bruins dueled with Georgia State (0-4-2) and saw the contest end in a 0-0 stalemate.
Bu opened the matchup poised, dominating time of possesion from the start. GSU had a strong scoring opportunity around the 22nd minute with a shot by Whitney Ravan that put Bruin netminder Megan Byrd (Gurnee, Ill.) to work. Freshman Tara Austin (Beaumont, Texas) went on a tear 15 minutes late, tallying three consecutive shots on goal in just over two minutes. Unfortunately, she was unable to find the back of the net and the teams carried their 0-0 stalemate into halftime.
The Bruins opened the second stanza with a great scoring opportunity, after senior Taylor Smith (Atlanta, Ga.) was fouled just outside the box. Senior Alison Alcott (Dallas, Texas) drilled the free kick into the net but it was barely batted away by GSU goalkeeper Brie Haynes. The Panthers morphed into a different squad later in the second half, playing much more aggressively on both sides of the ball and controlling the tempo of the match. However, neither team was able to find an offensive rhythm and the score remained locked at 0-0, forcing overtime for a decision.
Both overtime periods were filled with near misses from both teams that generated a combined four corner kicks. The Bruins had a great scoring chance in the first overtime after a corner kick. Freshman Kalie Carter (Hendersonville, Tenn.) fired a rocket toward the Georgia State goal that needed assistance to be blocked. Thirty seconds later, freshman Belicia Mendiola (McKinney, Texas) launched a header that barely went wide.
Despite a gritty battle that went to the final horn, neither team was able to find the back of the net and was forced to settle with the 0-0 tie.
The Panthers held the narrow advantage in shots, 14-13, and corner kicks, 7-4. The teams were even in saves, with five apiece.
Austin led BU with three shots, followed byMendiola and Alcott, who each recorded two shots.
Byrd logged her second consecutive start and saw her first extra minutes, collecting five saves on the day.
Belmont returns to action on Friday, September 12. The Bruins hit the road to face off at Appalachian State. Match time is set for 3 p.m. CT.

FLORIDA GULF COAST 4, MURRAY STATE 0
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Murray State women’s soccer team took a tough 4-0 loss to Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday at the FGCU Soccer Complex in Fort Myers, Florida.
The game was tied for the most of the first half until the 36th minute when Tabby Tindell scored on an assist by Sarah Lowicki, for the only goal of the opening stanza. While the Eagles (4-1) outshot MSU, 12-3, in the frame, most of FGCU’s shots did not find their target, as it only enjoyed a 3-2 advantage in that category.
However, it was a barrage in the middle of the second half over a span of just over five minutes that sealed the Racers’ fate. The sequence began with a foul committed by the Racers in the 67th minute, which awarded the Eagles a penalty kick opportunity, the third allowed by the Racers this year. Melissa Arnold successfully converted the attempt for the Eagles, marking her fist goal of the season and giving her team a 2-0 lead in the process.
Florida Gulf Coast moved to lead to 3-0 in the 70th minute on a second goal by Tindell in the match. The play was set-up by Julia Roddar who passed the ball to Shannen Wacker, who then beat MSU’s Shelby Haworth before sending the ball to Tindell, who chipped it in for the score. The final goal came in a similar fashion in the 73rd minute, only this time it was Tindell and Wacker who set up Paulain Speckmaier to do the scoring.
FGCU finished the match by outshooting the Racers, 22-12, but enjoyed a much slimmer margin in shots on goal at only 8-5. Bronagh Kerins led MSU on the afternoon with three total shots and one on target, while Mooney followed with two shots, both of which went on goal. Haworth fell to 0-2 in goal for Murray State with the loss, after going the full 90 minutes and allowing four goals, despite making four saves.
The Racers will return from the Sunshine State to end a five-match road swing against competition with a more regional flair next weekend. Meagan Radloff took the first penalty kick in the 78th minute. Chris Reed followed in the 80th minute with a penalty kick after making the run herself. It was Reed's third goal of the season and third consecutive game with a goal.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Tech soccer team ends its two-match home stand with a split, after falling 3-0 to Western Carolina on an overcast and blustery Sunday afternoon at Tech Soccer Field. A busy Golden Eagle defense stayed sturdy for much of the first half behind solid contributions by senior Katie Phillips, sophomore Kalyn Pruett, and freshman Mary Francis Hoots, until the Catamounts finally struck first on their eighth shot of the half.
With just over three minutes remaining until intermission, red-shirt junior Sara Robinson let loose on one from five yards outside of the box that caromed off the far post, before sliding into the net to break the scoreless tie.
The goal snapped a Golden Eagle defensive stretch of almost 160 minutes of keeping the opposition off the board.
