TENNESSEE STATE 93, STETSON 90 (2OT)
DELAND, Fla.
- Redshirt senior Keron DeShields scored eight of his game-high 27 points in the second overtime period to lift the Tennessee State men’s basketball team to a thrilling 93-90 win at Stetson on Monday night at the Edmunds Center. The double-overtime victory extends the Tigers’ winning streak to five games.

With 1.8 seconds left in the second overtime, DeShields calmly knocked down a pair of free throws to give the Tigers (7-2) a 93-90 lead, and Derick Newton’s desperation three from inside Stetson’s half was short as TSU earned its fourth win away from home this season.

Tied at 67-67 at the end of regulation, the game went to overtime where both team scored 11 points in the first session. In the second overtime, the Tigers outscored the Hatters (3-7) by a 15-12 margin.

For the Tigers, junior Wayne Martin recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 23 points and 17 rebounds while adding five blocks. Senior Demontez Loman also had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, and sophomore Darreon Reddick chipped in with 14 points.

The hot-shooting Hatters connected on seven three-pointers in the first half, leading for 16:30 of the opening 20 minutes. Stetson led by as many as 10 points on two occasions in the first half.

Trailing by a 29-19 margin with 7:26 left in the first half, the Tigers went on a 10-3 run that included a three-pointer from Johnny Woodard that helped the visitors cut the deficit to 32-29 with 3:15 left.

In the closing two minutes of the half, the Hatters kept the Tigers off the scoreboard and took a 37-31 lead into the locker rooms.

In the second half, TSU battled back and took the lead when DeShields rose up and knocked down a three-pointer off a screen for a 46-44 lead with 14:40 left.

Later in the half with TSU down by three, Martin’s three-point play with a layup and free throw leveled the score at 65-65 with just under three minutes to play in regulation. After two free throws by Luke Doyle gave Stetson a two-point lead, DeShields’ layup tied the score at 67-67 with 1:15 on the clock.

In Stetson’s final possession in regulation, Divine Myles missed a layup and Newton’s putback attempt was off the mark, forcing overtime.
In the first overtime, TSU put itself in position to win with a three-point lead at 78-75 on two free throws from Reddick with 27.5 seconds left. Newton banked in a three on the other end, however, with 20.9 seconds left to tie it up at 78-78. DeShields’ jumper as the buzzer sounded missed, sending the game headed to double overtime tied at 78-78.

The second overtime featured six lead changes and two ties before the Tigers pulled off the road victory. Down the stretch, Reddick again delivered at the line with two free throws with 8.7 seconds left for a 91-87 lead. With 2.4 seconds to go, Angel Rivera knocked down a three for Stetson to cut the TSU lead down to one, but DeShields was able to hit his free throws to help the Tigers hang on.

For the Hatters, Newton scored a team-best 22 points. The Tigers finished with a 50-41 rebounding edge.
