CARBONDALE, Ill. - SIUE women's basketball closed out a seven-game road swing Friday with a 71-57 loss at SIU Carbondale.
The Cougars dropped to 3-5 and will look to rebound with its first home contest in more than three weeks Monday at 7 p.m. when the Billikens of Saint Louis come to the Vadalabene Center.
SIUE was held to 32.4 percent (22-68) shooting from the field in a contest in which the Cougars fell behind 13-2 in the first three minutes of the game.
The Cougars had to play catchup against the Salukis, 4-3. SIUE was able to come within three points after an 8-0 run to close out the first period.
SIU Carbondale, however, grabbed the momentum back in the second period and regained a double-digit lead 33-23 by halftime.
Four players scored in double figures overall for the Salukis. Rishonda Napier led SIU Carbondale with 18 points followed by 11 each from Celine VanHyfte and Kylie Giebelhausen as well as 10 from Cartaesha Macklin. Dyana Pierre added nine points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
SIU Carbondale won the battle on the boards 55-44. That included 25 offensive rebounds with eight from Pierre.
Shronda Butts led the Cougars in scoring with 23 points. She was the lone player in double figures for SIUE. Both CoCo Moore and Donshel Beck each grabbed 10 rebounds and were within one scoring play from double-doubles.
The Cougars outscored the Salukis in the paint 38-26.
SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 66, WICHITA STATE 62
WICHITA, Kan. - Southeast Missouri women's basketball won its first overtime game of the season Friday, downing Wichita State (1-5), 66-62.
The Redhawks snapped their three-game losing streak and climb back over .500 at 5-4 on the season.
Southeast had four players in double-figure points Friday afternoon. Redshirt-freshman Imani Johnson picked up her first career double-double with 14 points and a career-high 10 rebounds.
Friday's game was Southeast's first overtime game since Jan. 17 of last season against Tennessee Tech.
Wichita State hosted its annual School House Rocks with the Shocks Friday. Over 8,000 area school kids filled Charles Koch Arena.
Southeast found themselves down by two at the end of the first quarter, 14-12. Southeast shot 4-of-19 from the field in the frame. The Redhawks trailed after the first despite the Shockers ending the quarter on a 5:01 scoring drought.
Tied at 16 early in the second quarter, the Shockers went on a seven-point run to take a 23-16 lead on Southeast. Wichita State went on to take a 10-point lead on the Redhawks with 5:24 to play.
An eight-point run by Southeast, sparked by a layup by Erin Bollmann, ensued to pull within two of Wichita State, 29-27.
The Redhawks were down two with two minutes to play, 31-29. A good 3-point bucket at the buzzer by Aundra Stovall put the Shockers up by five at halftime, 34-29.
Bollmann finished with seven first-half points to lead Southeast. Johnson and Bollmann each pulled down four rebounds in the opening half to lead the team.
Southeast used a 10-point run in the third to take a 41-36 lead on the Shockers with 2:09 to play.
Wichita State's first field goal of the period did not come until the 1:41 mark of the frame.
Southeast ended the third quarter on a good jumper by Bri Mitchell to extend the lead to seven, 47-40.
The Redhawks outscored Wichita State, 18-6, in the third period. Johnson tallied eight points in the third quarter.
Late in the fourth quarter, Wichita State found a 52-51 lead on a layup by Jaleesa Chapel.
With 29 seconds left, a jumper by Olivia Hackmann put Southeast back up by three, 57-54.
A 3-point bucket by TaQuandra Mike with seconds left in regulation tied the game at 57 all and forced the game into overtime.
A 3-point basket by Diamond Lockhart gave the Shockers a 60-57 lead a minute and 31 seconds into the overtime period. Mitchell tied the game when she converted a conventional 3-point play after being fouled, 60-60.
The Redhawks found themselves back out in front by two on a layup by Mitchell with 42 seconds left.
With 10 seconds left, Johnson picked up a rebound after a pair of missed free throws by Stovall.
Johnson was fouled and drained both free throws to extend the Redhawk lead to 66-62.
The Redhawks would hold on for eight more seconds to defeat the Shockers, 66-62.
Aside from Johnson, Adrianna Murphy (12), Mitchell (15), and Hackmann (10) all had double-digit points in the contest.
Hackmann extended her double-digit point streak to nine games.
Southeast shot 81% (17-for-21) from the free-throw line. Johnson (6-for-6), Hackmann (4-for-4), Mitchell (3-for-3), and Murphy (2-for-2) were all perfect from the charity stripe.
The Redhawks had 11 steals and forced a season-high 21 turnovers.
The Redhawks' six-game road swing will come to a close Tuesday at Lipscomb. The Redhawks and Bisons tip off at 6:30 p.m. from Nashville, Tennessee.
GEORGIA SOUTHERN 60, JACKSONVILLE STATE 56
STATESBORO, Ga. - Jacksonville State's road woes continued Friday evening with a tough 60-56 overtime loss to Georgia Southern inside the Hanner Fieldhouse in Statesboro, Ga.
The setback drops the Gamecocks to 2-6 on the season, while the Eagles improved to 2-3 with their second consecutive win of the season after dropping the first three games of the season.
JSU held leads in the final moments of regulation and overtime but GSU was able to get the game0tying basket with 1.3 seconds left on the game clock and the eventual game-winning field goal by Angel McGowan, who led all scorers with 26 points in the contest.
In the waning moments of regulation, senior Courtney Strain converted on a three-point play after a driving lay up and connecting on a free throw to give JSU a 50-49 lead with 55 seconds left. After a blocked shot by freshman Rayven Pearson, junior Kelly Naughton was fouled and sent to the free throw line and extended JSU's lead to 51-49. The Eagles responded with a bucket with 1.3 ticks left on the clock by Briana Jones.
In the extra session, GSU jumped out to the lead on a three pointer by Abby Hix and held the advantage until Jax State junior Briana Benson finished a three-point play to even the score at 55-all and give JSU its last point and lead of the contest with a free throw. It was JSU's 38th all-0time overtime game and the first since last season's regular season finale at Morehead State.
McGowan lifted the Eagles past the Gamecocks with a lay up with 10 seconds left in overtime. She finished the contest 8-of-16 from the field and 8-of-9 from the free throw line. GSU turned in a 17-of-22 night at the charity stripe, while Jax State was 16-of-24 at the line.
The Gamecocks weathered the Eagles' fast start after falling behind 9-0, they cut the deficit down to 15-9 by the end of the first quarter. The teams nearly flip-flopped the quarter scoring as JSU out-scored GSU 16-9 and took a 25-24 lead in to the halftime break. The Eagles tacked on 15 points in the third quarter before out-scoring JSU 9-5 in the five minute extra session.
The freshmen duo of Chloe Long and Rayven Pearson highlighted the Jax State scoring as they had flashbacks of dominating games at Hazel Green High School. Long, who led the Gamecocks with 18 points and six rebounds before fouling out with just under four minutes left in regulation. Pearson was one rebound shy of recording her first collegiate double-double as she pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds and tacked on nine points in 46 minutes of action. Long, who has now scored in double figures in the last three games, knocked down 6-of-11 from the field and was a perfect 6-of-6 at the free throw line.
Strain recorded nine points in 43 minutes, while Benson finished with seven off the bench.
Patrice Butler added 11 points off the bench for the Eagles.
The Gamecocks will not turn their attention to the end of the semester finals on the JSU campus next week and will return to action on Sunday, December 13, hosting NCAA Division II in-state foe Tuskegee. Tip off is set for 1 p.m. at Pete Mathews Coliseum
