FLORENCE, Ala. - UT Martin's Hunter Richardson became the third-straight Skyhawk golfer to win the Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year award on Friday night at a banquet following the first day of play at the 2015 OVC Men’s Golf Championship. The All-OVC and All-Newcomer squads were also announced at the event.

The OVC Player and Coach of the Year awards will be announced on Sunday afternoon following the final round of play at the Championship, which is being held at The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at The Shoals in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.

Richardson follows teammate Ben Reeves and Austin Swafford who took home the awards the past two seasons; it marks the first time in OVC history a school has won the award three years in a row. The freshman played in 11 events and averaged 72.5 strokes per round, which was second on his team and tied for seventh in the OVC. Richardson had five Top 10 finishes on the season including a sixth place finish at the Frito Lay/All-State Intercollegiate in February.

This season the All-OVC team was once again comprised of one 10-person squad instead of two five-member teams as done in past seasons.

The team included four repeat selections from last year in Belmont junior Ashton Van Horne, Eastern Kentucky senior Patric Sundlof, Jacksonville State senior Tomasz Anderson and UT Martin senior Brendon Caballero. The team was rounded out by Austin Peay junior Chris Baker, Eastern Kentucky senior Taylor Riggs, Morehead State junior Logan Hogge, Murray State senior Jordan Smith, Tennessee Tech senior Lee Whitehead and UTM's Richardson, the Freshman of the Year.

Richardson, the Freshman of the Year, also headlined the five-person All-Newcomer squad. He was joined by four other freshman on the squad in Austin Peay's Justin Arens, Eastern Kentucky's Jared Brown and Tennessee State's Andy Stout and Jermey Fultz.

The 2015 OVC Men’s Golf Championship continues with 18 holes on Saturday and 18 holes on Sunday. Live scoring can be accessed through links at OVCSports.com.
