NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s soccer team saw itself open its final tournament of the nonconference slate with a 3-0 loss to Western Carolina.

Playing in a tournament hosted by Lipscomb University, the Skyhawks couldn’t overcome a first half deficit as the Catamounts turned up the intensity in the final half to outshoot UT Martin by a 13-7 margin.

UT Martin (1-6) placed three of its seven shots on the Western Carolina net with freshman forward Sierra Franz placing two of her three shots on goal. Another freshman, defender Katelyn Colvin fired the other shot on goal with her lone strike in the contest. Freshmen Rebecca Starnes and Lisa Schmieder combined for the final three shots for the Skyhawks.

Western Carolina (4-3-1) was led by a trio of scorers in the match as Chandler Arrowood, Hannah Sink and Kelly Pannell each notched a goal. Contributing to the goals were Sayres McKenna, Kasey Cooke and Haven Leland, who led the Catamounts with three shots taken. In goal, Carly Tinstman earned a clean sheet by stopping three Skyhawk shots.

UT Martin opened the match controlling possession for the opening 10 minutes but Western Carolina would notch the opening goal on their first shot attempt of the match. McKenna connected with Arrowood in the middle of the 18-yard box in the 11th minute, slipping the ball past Skyhawk keeper MaKenzie Crawford.

The Skyhawks searched for the equalizer with shots by Colvin and Schmieder but were unable to find the back of the Catamount net. Western Carolina doubled its lead in the 29th minute as Cooke fired a pass over the Skyhawk defense, finding Sink in stride for the goal from 10 yards out.

The second half saw the Skyhawks come out aggressive and pressuring the back line, firing shots from Starnes, Franz and Schmieder but were unable to find a goal. With the Skyhawks attacking up the field, Western Carolina concluded the scoring with a counter attack in the 77th minute. Leland dribbled up the right side of the field before crossing the ball into the box where Pannell scored just inside the left post.

UT Martin concludes its nonconference schedule on Saturday, Sept. 19 with a first time match up against Akron. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. from the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.
