MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – Belmont’s
Daniel Booker was named the 2015-16 Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year for men's golf. The award, along with the All-OVC and All-Newcomer squads, were announced Monday evening at a banquet following the first day of play at the 2016 OVC Championship.
The OVC Player and Coach of the Year awards will be announced Wednesday afternoon following the final round of play at the Championship, which is being held at The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at The Shoals in Muscle Shoals, Alabama .
Booker is the first Belmont player to earn the Freshman of the Year award since it was first awarded in 2005. The Dyersburg, Tennessee native had a pair of Top 10 finishes and six finishes in the Top 26 in 10 total events this year. He entered the OVC Championship tied for ninth in the League in stroke average (73.2).
For the fourth year in a row the All-OVC team was comprised of one 10-person squad instead of two five-member teams as done in past seasons. The All-OVC team included seven seniors and three sophomores.
The team included three players who were All-OVC selections a year ago in Belmont’s
Ashton Van Horne, Morehead State’s
Logan Hogge and UT Martin’s
Hunter Richardson. Also selected were Tennessee Tech senior
Mitch Thomas and UT Martin senior
Ben Reeves, who were All-OVC selections in 2013-14, and Murray State senior
Preston French, who was previously an OVC All-Newcomer pick in 2012-13. The team was rounded out by Belmont sophomore
Noah Trenkler, Eastern Kentucky sophomore
Will Sallee and Murray State seniors
Jared Gosser and
Brock Simmons.
Booker, the Freshman of the Year headline the six-person All-Newcomer squad which included an extra winner due to a tie in voting. The squad also included Eastern Kentucky’s
