TENNESSEE TECH 1, MOREHEAD STATE 0
COOKVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee Tech defeated visting Morehead State, 1-0, on Friday.
Kendall Powell drove the ball to the left corner past a diving Michelle Washburn, giving the Golden Eagles a 1-0 victory on Friday at the Tech Soccer Field.
And while it took a while to see that lone score, it was still a sigh of relief for Tech head coach Steve Springthorpe.
The Golden Eagles (7-4-3, 4-1-3 Ohio Valley Conference) outshot Morehead State 18-5, including 10-2 on-goal. On corner kicks, Tech had 12 to MSU's four.
Needless to say, Tech had plenty of opportunities and made Washburn work for her nine saves.
Either way, the goal was going to come eventually as Morehead State was worn down.
Tech almost scored earlier in the contest on an Owens corner with 12:23 remaining in the contest. The ball sailed into Washburn's hands, but she lost control of it, then recovered it before it passed in.
Powell, a freshman on the squad, has flourished in her role this season as she collected her third goal of the campaign.
Springthorpe was complimentary of the team's approach in collecting the win.
Tech controlled possession and kept the ball in the Eagle zone for most of the contest, leaving Morehead State (3-10-1, 2-4-1 OVC) without a shot in the first 45 minutes. MSU was able to put some offense together late, claiming five shots – two on-goal – in the second half.
Powell led Tech with four shots on-goal, while Karigan Owens had three, Dani Shartouny two and Shipley one.
Naerdemann saved two shots in the contest, and Owens was able to deflect a late Morehead scoring opportunity just before time expired.
Tech returns to action on Sunday as it hosts Eastern Kentucky at 1 p.m.
SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 3, EASTERN ILLINOIS 0
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri soccer (5-7-3, 2-3-3) picked up its second Ohio Valley Conference victory of the season Friday evening in shutout fashion over Eastern Illinois (5-10-2, 0-7-1) by a 3-0 clip.
Esmie Gonzales netted a pair of goals in the opening half to put the Redhawks up 2-0. It was the sophomore's second two-goal game of her career. She co-led the team with four shots with Shelby Beussink, who netted SEMO's third goal.
The Redhawks and Panthers matched each other's 13 shots on the evening with the Redhawks putting four on goal and EIU putting five.
Kindra Lierz and Maddie Gleeson split time in net Friday evening with Lierz playing the first half. Lierz made one stop while Gleeson recorded three. The two combined for the shutout of the Panthers.
Sara Teteak played the full 90 minutes in goal for EIU. She made one save but gave up all three Redhawk goals.
The entire Southeast backline of Maddi Karstens, Jasmin Hilliard, Shay Darga, and Bri Caccavale played the entire 90-minute affair.
Gonzales went back-to-back in just over a minute, a minute and five seconds to be exact, netting two unassisted goals to put SEMO up 2-0 in the 43rd minute of the match. The goals were her third and fourth goals of the season.
SEMO entered the locker room at half with a 2-0 lead while also leading in shots 8-5. Gonzales was responsible for four shots while Shelby Beussink had three. The Redhawks took the lone corner kick of the opening stanza.
Seven minutes into the second half, Beussink netted her second goal in as many games to widen the SEMO lead to 3-0. Hilliard crossed the ball right in front of the net for Beussink to tap it in for the score.
The Redhawks were outshot in the second half 8-5. Gleeson shut the Panthers out in the half, recording four saves.
SEMO's three goals ties a season high. Southeast scored three against Illinois Springfield on Aug. 20.
EASTERN KENTUCKY 1, JACKSONVILLE STATE 0
JACKOSNVILLE, Ala. - Senior forward Jordan Foster scored a dramatic golden goal midway through the first overtime period that lifted the Eastern Kentucky University soccer team past the Jacksonville State Gamecocks, 1-0, on Friday night at JSU Soccer Field.
In the 95th minute, the Fairborn, Ohio native took a throw-in from junior Bailly Bounds and fired a shot from 30-yards out that sailed past the goalkeeper and into the top left of the net. Foster now has recorded three game-winners on the year and is tied with fellow senior forward Emmi Carroll with a team-leading six goals on the season.
EKU’s unbeaten streak is now at an OVC-best nine games.
Foster led EKU (8-3-4, 5-0-3 OVC) with eight shots on the night, three being on target. In total, the Colonels managed 12 shots.
Senior goalkeeper Anna Hall recorded three saves and her fifth clean sheet of the season in the win.
Center backs Haley Kemper and Katie Shaffer anchored the Colonel backline, never leaving the field of play.
The Gamecocks (5-9-2, 2-6 OVC) were led by Madis Carruthers, who tallied four shots on the evening.
UT MARTIN 3, SIUE 2
MARTIN, Tenn. - Freshman Alice Adams scored two goals – including the golden strike in the 107th minute of play – to lift the University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team to a 3-2 double overtime victory over SIUE this evening at Skyhawk Field.
Adams’ two-goal night was the third time this season that a UT Martin player had found the back of the net twice in a single match as the Skyhawks prevailed in their sixth overtime match of 2017. Her game-winner provided UT Martin (5-9-3, 3-4-1 Ohio Valley Conference) with a big three points to shoot up two spots in the league’s regular season standings as the OVC Tournament approaches.
Playing with a fully healthy squad for the first time since late August, UT Martin held a pair of leads before the visiting Cougars (6-7-2, 4-3-1 OVC) tied up the match in the 64th minute. A bruising Skyhawk offense peppered attempts on SIUE goalkeeper Juli Rossi (12 saves) all evening before Adams broke through for her fourth goal and second game-winner of the 2017 campaign.
Adams more than doubled her career-high in shot attempts (10) tonight while junior Amy McGivern accounted for her fourth goal of the season while dialing up eight shots as UT Martin outshot SIUE by a 31-14 margin. Kamryn Chappell found quite the opportune time to deliver her first career assist, as her pass perfectly led Adams for the game-winner with 3:04 remaining in the second overtime period.
In goal, Erica Myers picked up her fourth victory of the season by turning away four saves. The freshman logged all 106:56 in net to help the Skyhawks to their third consecutive home victory over SIUE.
McGivern’s goal in the 22nd minute put UT Martin on the scoreboard. Her free kick from five yards outside the box was true as the Skyhawks grabbed an early 1-0 lead.
However, SIUE struck just 30 seconds later with an equalizing goal to make the score 1-1 at the halftime intermission. The Cougars led the shot category 9-8 at the break but could only muster five more shots in the contest.
Adams’ first goal of the evening game at the 51-minute mark, as she knocked in a loose ball that deflected off a diving save from Rossi.
UT Martin kept its lead until a yellow card gave the Cougars a free kick opportunity in the 64th minute. SIUE was able to sail a goal past the outstretched Myers to knot the score at 2-all.
Adams and Sara Ketis each threatened to break the tie with shots on goal to close out the second half but the match was sent into overtime.
The Skyhawks placed four of their six shots on goal in the first overtime, as Nicole Collins, Danae Kaldaridou (two attempts) and Adams each fired away. Rossi was able to snare clean high-pressure saves on each attempt to extend the match into the second 10-minute overtime stanza.
Collins accounted for another shot less than two minutes into second overtime before Adams delivered the dagger. Chappell sent a firm pass to a streaking Adams, who found herself in a one-on-one situation with Rossi. The Ormskirk, England native won the duel to send the home fans happy.
Caroline Hoefert finished with a goal and three shots while MacKenzie Litzsinger shot four times for SIUE. Peyton Roehnelt also scored for the Cougars.
