JACKSONVILLE STATE 49, ALABAMA A&M 33
JACKSONVILLE, Ala -
In their lowest scoring contest of the season so far, the Jacksonville State women's basketball team still managed to pull out a 49-33 victory over in-state foe, Alabama A&M, Tuesday night at Pete Mathews Coliseum.

The win came in the final non-conference home game of the year for JSU (6-3), who has established an early 4-1 mark in its home floor. The visiting Bulldogs (4-4) fell in the first matchup between the two schools since 2009.

Head coach Rick Pietri, now in his fifth season at the helm of the Jax State program, tied former Gamecock head coach Tony Mabrey (1990-93) for third on the school's all-time wins list with 62 career victories for the Red and White.

JSU shot just 33 percent in the win, however 12 Gamecocks managed to score with freshman Kiana Johnson leading the way with eight points following her first career start. The defense was the bigger story for JSU as the Gamecocks held A&M to 21 percent shooting (12-for-57). The Bulldogs were twice limited to single-digit scoring quarters with six in the second and just four in the third.

Both teams felt each other out early as the score read 4-2 midway through the first. Eventually the scoring picked up with Jax State leading 11-10 at the end of the opening period. An 8-0 run to start the second broke the game open for JSU who went into halftime with a 26-16 advantage. The margin would double in the third as the Gamecocks extended their gap to 40-20 at one point for the largest lead of the night.

JSU took advantage of A&M's missed shots winning the rebounding battle, 52-38. It was the most rebounds since JSU recorded 55 in their season-opening win. Rayven Pearson had a team-best 12 boards, while Chloe Long secured nine, followed by Tyler Phelion and Tasha Magruder each with seven.

JSU hits the road this weekend traveling to Clemson, South Carolina, to meet the Tigers from the Atlantic Coast Conference. Game time for Sunday's contest is schedule for 1 p.m. CT.
