EASTERN ILLINOIS 7, SOUTH CAROLINA STATE 1; KANSAS 4, EASTERN ILLINOIS 0
JACKSONVILLE, Fla
. - The Eastern Illinois softball team continued tournament play Saturday at the Osprey Invitational winning their opening match against South Carolina State 7-1 before falling to Kansas 4-0.

The Panthers now stand at 5-3 on the year with one game still to play in the Osprey Invitational.

Four Panthers finished the day recording two hits as freshman Haley Mitchell became the only player to earn a hit in each game.

EIU jumped out in front early in game one of Saturday's doubleheader thanks to a three-run home run from Haley Mitchell in the top of the first. Mitchell's blast over the center field wall marks her second home run of the year as she put the Panthers on top 3-0 at the end of the first inning.

The Panthers added two more runs off another home run in the second inning this time from Kayla Bear marking her second round-tripper of the Osprey Invitational.

EIU extended their lead even more in the top of the third inning as Mady Poulter smacked a lead-off single up the middle eventually stealing second and advancing to third off a fly out to right field. Amber Toenyes brought Poulter in to score hitting an RBI single up the middle to give EIU a 6-0 lead.

South Carolina State avoided the shutout in the bottom of the third inning after SCSU's Unique Whitehurst reached first on a fielding error. Day-sha Stewart singled to left center field on the next at-bat to move Whitehurst into scoring position. Whitehurst eventually came around to score advancing to third on a passed ball and crossing home plate off a wild pitch for the unearned run to make it 6-1.

EIU added one more run in the fourth inning as Tori Johnson hit an RBI single to center field to score Jennifer Ames from second base and give the Panthers a 7-1 lead.

Allison Golic recorded her first career win on the mound for EIU against the Bulldogs going four innings and throwing six strikeouts. Katie Grunert came in to close out the game in the fifth inning recording three innings pitched and three strikeouts, two of which came against the final two batters of the game for SCSU.

It was a different story in the late game against Kansas for EIU as the Jayhawks got out in front early. After putting runners on first and second with one out, Kansas attempted a double steal with Jessie Roane and Erin McGinley. Both runners would end up scoring on the play to give KU a 2-0 lead following a throwing error from Ashlynne Paul on the attempted pick-off.

The Jayhawks added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning off an RBI double from Harli Ridling. A sacrifice fly from Taylor Dodson on the next at-bat gave KU a 4-0 lead.

The Panthers finally got their first hit of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to a lead-off infield single from Taylor Monahan. EIU loaded the bases following back-to-back singles, but could not capitalize recording their only hits of the game in the first three at-bats.

The loss marked Michelle Rogers first of the season as she drops to 3-1 on the mound going seven innings and giving up two earned runs while recording two strikeouts.

The Panthers close out the Osprey Invitational tomorrow morning as they take on hosts North Florida at 10:15 a.m.

SIUE 4, MERCER 3
AUBURN, Ala. -
Sarah Lopesilvero doubled home the game-winning run in the fifth inning Saturday as SIUE defeated Mercer 4-3 at the Plainsman Invitational.

SIUE improved to 7-2 overall while Mercer dropped to 4-3. Both teams return to the diamond Sunday for an 11:45 a.m. contest to close out the tournament.

Lopesilvero faced Mercer relief pitcher Megan Bilgri after both Kalei Kaneshiro and Amy Hunt drew walks. Lopesilvero adjusted quickly, lacing a 2-2 pitch down the left field line to score Kaneshiro.

SIUE pitcher Emily Ingles earned the victory in relief and improved to 2-1. The Cougar freshman tossed 4 2/3 innings and struck out four. At one point, she retired nine straight Mercer batters.

The two teams went back and forth in the early innings. Zoe Schafer put the Cougars on top early with her first home run of the season.

SIUE stranded nine runners overall.

MURRAY STATE 10, JACKSON STATE 4; SOUTH ALABAMA 8, MURRAY STATE 3
MOBILE, Ala. -
The Murray State softball team picked up a win in Saturday’s opener of the 2017 Mardi Gras Invitational at Jaguar Field in Mobile, Alabama, but fell in the second game of the day. The Racers started day two of the tournament with a 10-4 win over Jackson State, but then fell to host South Alabama, who received votes in the latest NFCA/USA Today Top 25 poll, 8-3, in the finale.

In the bottom of the fifth, Jackson State(1-7) finally found its way to the scoreboard on an error by Murray State and a RBI-single by Denisha Knight to cut the lead to 8-2. In the sixth, the Racers made up the runs on a RBI-double from Odom and a sacrifice fly from Lexi Jones, to push the lead back out to eight runs at 10-2. However, in the bottom of the frame, the Tigers scored two more on a pair of RBI-singles from Cheyenne Aplon and Victoria Nelson to make it 10-4.

Neither team scored in the seventh, allowing the Racers to pick up the 10-4 win, their third in a row. Ranburger and Cayla Levins were each 3-for-4 on the day, with Ranburger scoring three times and walking once and Levins scoring one run and driving in another. Odom, Kesel and Brenna Finck also had multiple hits in the game to give the Racers a season-high 14 total. Murray State has now outscored its opponents 29-5 over the past three games.

In the circle, Haven Campbell got the win by allowing no runs on just two hits with three strikeouts and no walks over 5.2 innings of work. Campbell, who moved to 2-1 with the win, both started and finished the game after Ellison Barrett threw 1.2 relief innings and allowed two earned runs on six hits and a walk.

Game 2 – South Ala. 8, Murray St. 3
The Jaguars (7-1) struck first in the game in the opening frame of game two on a RBI-double from Abby Krzywiecki, who herself would score later in the inning on a single from Kristian Foster to give the Jaguars an early 2-0 lead. However, in the top of the third, Murray State would take a 3-2 lead of its own thanks to a double from Jessica Twaddle that scored two and a single from Odom that scored Twaddle.

The lead did last long for Murray State though, as South Alabama answered in the bottom of the inning with five runs on a trio of singles from Foster, Savanna Mayo and Haleigh Lowe. USA tacked on an insurance run in the fifth with a sacrifice fly from MC Nichols to extend the lead to 8-3. Nichols’s RBI in the fifth capped all scoring in the game as the Jaguars held on for the 8-3 win.

South Alabama’s Foster led all hitters in the contest by going 4-for-4 with three RBIs and a run, while MC Nichols was also perfect at 2-for-2 with a run, a RBI and a walk. UT MARTIN 13, FORT WAYNE 4; AKRON 3, UT MARTIN 2
MONTGOMERY, Ala.
- The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team scored 15 runs on the afternoon, pushing the team’s winning streak to seven games before completing a split of Day Two of the Black and Gold Tournament hosted by Alabama State. The Skyhawks defeated Fort Wayne 13-4 in five innings before falling to Akron 3-2.

The Skyhawks (7-1) began the day by continuing an offensive surge which saw the squad outscore its opponents by 27 runs during the course of the tournament. In the early game the Skyhawks scored 13 runs on 16 hits before struggling in a rematch against Akron, scoring two runs while being held to just four hits on the day.

Sophomore Lauren Myers paced the Skyhawks with four base hits on the afternoon along with a pair of stolen bases while Renate Meckl, Alli Fulcher, Jessie Douglas, Savannah Dodson, Aeron Smith, Jodie Duncan and Carly Gonzales all tallied multi-hit afternoons. Dodson hit the team’s lone home run on the day while Fulcher and Duncan led the team with three RBIs each.

Game 1: UT Martin 13, Fort Wayne 4 (Five innings)
After the start of the day was delayed by a hour due to rain in the area, UT Martin would not be affected by the delay. The Skyhawks would lead off the first innings with a single to left by Carly Gonzales to start the game before quickly moving into scoring position by swiping second base. Another single by Lauren Myers would result in runners on second and third for Jodie Duncan who laced a two-run single up the middle to score the pair of speedsters and give the squad an early advantage.

The Skyhawks would again add to their lead in the second inning following a leadoff single by Jessie Douglas before Gonzales would work a walk of her own to put another pair on the base paths. Looking to pad the team’s lead, Rachel Williams would pull a double into left center to tally two RBIs. With just one player left on the bases, Renate Meckl would clear the bags with a triple to center to push the Skyhawks’ advantage out to 5-0.

Fort Wayne would finally break into the scoring column in the bottom half of the second inning. A pair of singles by Amber Davis and Kelly Pevely would get the Mastodons in action. With runners on first and third, Fort Wayne would attempt a double-steal which would prove unsuccessful but score a run.

UT Martin would pad its advantage in the third inning with another pair of runs. After starting the inning with back-to-back outs, the Skyhawks saw Douglas single to short to extend the inning. With the inning still alive, Savannah Dodson would notch her first home run of the season, smashing a two-run blast to left to make it a 7-1 contest.

The Mastodons would look to chip into the margin yet again in the third. Three consecutive players would reach base in the inning courtesy of a pair of walks and an error. With the bases loaded Jessica Murray would lace a two-run double down the left field line make cut the deficit down to four runs.

UT Martin answered back in the following inning as Alli Fulcher pulled a two-run double into left field to score Meckl and Myers on the play. The squad would not be done as Duncan brought home Fulcher on the following play with an opposite field double of her own to make it a 10-3 contest.
Fort Wayne found another run of its own in the bottom of the fourth off a solo home run by Pevely to serve as the team’s final run.

The Skyhawks would look to end the game away early for the fourth straight game in the fifth. A successful double steal of second and home by Gonzales and Dodson would bring home one before a sacrifice fly by Myers brought home the second on the following play. The Skyhawks would record their 13th and final run as Reid Ballard drew a full-count walk with the bases loaded to make it a 13-4 contest.

Brooke Kennedy (4-0, 3.50 ERA) would pick up her fourth victory of the season along with yet another complete game. Kennedy struck out three while allowing three earned runs and five hits in five innings of work.

Game 2: Akron 3, UT Martin 2
After suffering a significant 13-2 loss at the hands of UT Martin on Friday afternoon, Akron looked for revenge in Saturday’s rematch. With neither team scoring in the game’s opening three innings, the Zips would break into the scoring column first in the top of the fourth inning. Ashley Sims would lead off the inning with a triple to right center. Looking to put the team to top, Sims would score later in the inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Savannah Fruin to give the Zips an early advantage.

UT Martin would look to answer in the bottom half of the inning to knot the game back up. A leadoff single by Myers got the inning started before moving into scoring position by swiping second and advancing to third on a wild pitch. Once settled at third, Myers would come home to score on a single through the left side off the bat of Fulcher.

Akron would waste little time getting back on top in the following half inning. Alyssa Nicholas led off the inning with a double down the left field line before later coming home off a RBI groundout by Jenna Jones to take a 2-1 lead. The Zips would add to their lead in the top of the seventh inning with another RBI single by Jones.

Facing a two-run deficit in the final inning, UT Martin would look to strike in the seventh. A leadoff single by Meckl would start the inning before coming home to score on a single up the middle by Smith. The Skyhawks would look to tie the game but would fail to find the equalizer, falling just short 3-2.

Sara Hooten (1-1, 1.27 ERA) suffered defeat in the pitching circle despite striking out five in seven innings of work. Hooten allowed just four hits and two earned runs.

UT Martin will return to action at the Chattanooga Frost Classic on Friday, Feb. 24-26.

RADFORD 6, TENNESSEE TECH 5
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -
The Tennessee Tech softball team trailed 6-0 after five innings, but the Golden Eagles weren't going to go down quietly.

After all, it had been a day filled with delay after delay after delay as rain swept through the Chattanooga area in the morning hours, playing havoc with the Chattanooga Challenge presented by Ruby Falls schedule.

So when the Golden Eagles got some offense going, Tech got it in a big way, striking for five runs in the final two frames against Radford on Saturday evening.

However, the Highlanders were able to hold on, taking a 6-5 victory.

Tech falls to 1-7 on the season with the loss.

Gabby LaSala hit her third home run of the weekend as she drilled a grand slam over the left field fence, doubling her RBI tally for the season with eight. Kayla Hughes, Hallie Davis and Jessie Lowert each scored on the blow.

The Golden Eagles left seven runners on base.

Danielle Liberatore took the loss, falling to 0-4 on the season. She allowed four runs – three earned – on six hits, while walking none and striking out three in 3 2/3 innings of work. Leigh Ellen Thomas came on in relief, throwing 2 1/3 innings as she allowed two runs – one earned – on two hits.

Mallory Marsicek was credited with the win, allowing five runs on six hits, walking six and striking out four.

With the weather, Tech's scheduled game against UConn was cancelled.

The Golden Eagles will return to action on Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. as they take on IUPUI.

HAMMOND, La. -

That was all the run support Krumrey (2-1) needed as she picked up her second win of the season.

Rachel Hayes suffered the loss, giving up two hits and striking out eight in five innings. Hayes also walked four.

Rachel Anderson, Addison Barnouski, Ellis and Parker Bandy each had a hit for SEMO.

The Redhawks close out the Lion Classic II with games against Buffalo and Alcorn State Sunday.

BELMONT 5, WESTERN ILLINOIS 4; BELMONT 12, WESTERN KENTUCKY 3
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -
Belmont Softball sealed its fifth-consecutive victory of the season in dramatic fashion on the first day of the Hilltopper Classic.  The Bruins (5-0) used an out at the plate in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Western Illinois (2-5), 5-4.

The Bruins jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first using a double to the left corner by Chelsey Deloney (Gardendale, Ala.) to put across one.  Solid pitching by sophomore Ashley Johnson (Kingwood, Texas) kept the Leatherneck bats silent over the next two innings.  Belmont used another Deloney double to put another runner over the plate, giving it a 2-0 advantage after three innings.

The BU bats refused to cool as the contest wore on.  Belmont added another run in the top of the fourth to take a 3-0 lead before the Leathernecks finally connected offensively.  Using a solo homerun, Western Illinois prevented a shutout in the bottom of the fifth.  The Leathernecks were able to knot the score with two more runs before a diving catch by sophomore Hayley Baker (Rockwall, Texas) in right field ended the inning.

However, the Bruins fired back in the top of the sixth to regain the lead.  Back-to-back singles by sophomore Baylee Cook (Lewisburg, Tenn.) and freshman Bailey Sims (Flowery Branch, Ga.) forced a WIU pitching change before junior Lexi Rouse (Macon, Ga.) knocked a single to left to empty the bases, thanks to a Leatherneck throwing error.  The flurry put Belmont ahead, 5-3.  Western Illinois battled back to add one run in the bottom of the same inning, bringing the atmosphere to fever pitch at the WKU Softball Complex.  Belmont was unable to put a run across in the top of the seventh and WIU made immediate moves to try to force extra innings or pull out a late win.

The Leathernecks got one runner one and moved her to second with a sacrifice.  Rouse collected her lone strikeout of the contest for out No. 2, setting up the game's dramatic conclusion.  A player doubled and put WIU in position to take the game.  However, senior Amy Zeronian (Pasadena, Calif.) threw a laser in from left field to Deloney behind to the plate to make the tag on the aggressive base runner for the final out of the game, sealing the 5-4 win for BU.

Cook and Sims both went 3-for-4 at the plate.  Cook and Deloney each registered a pair of doubles.

Inside the circle, Johnson and Rouse split time inside the circle, each ringing up a strikeout apiece.   Johnson picked up her second win of the season while Rouse notched her second save as a Bruin.

Belmont Softball pulled off a stunner in the nightcap of the Hilltopper Classic defeating host-WKU, 12-3.  The Bruins (6-0) notched the program's first win over the Hilltoppers (4-3) with the six-inning victory.

The Bruins jumped out to an early lead again in the top of the first.  Junior Lexi Rouse (Macon, Ga.) drilled her first home run of the season over the left fence to put a total of three runs on the board for BU.  Belmont added a single run in the top of the second inning, after three consecutive singles by seniors Kayla Wells (Bonney Lake, Wash.) and Amy Zeronian (Pasadena, Calif.) and sophomore Baylee Cook (Lewisburg, Tenn.)  Rookie Bailey Sims (Flowery Branch, Ga.) used a sacrifice fly to send a run over the plate to extend the lead before BU added one more run in the top of the third after a hit by Rouse.

WKU finally awakened its bats in the bottom of the fourth evidenced with a triple and a homerun from back-to-back batters.  The flurry added three runs to the Hilltopper tally but the Bruins redoubled their efforts to maintain their lead down the stretch.

BU held on to its 7-3 lead until the top of the sixth when it exploded offensively.  Singles by Sims and Rouse opened the door for a three-run homerun by senior Chelsey Deloney (Gardendale, Ala.) to blow the game wide open.   Junior Jess Andree (Darien, Ill.) followed with a single before sophomore Sami Long (Springfield, Ill.) knocked the first homerun of her career to put Belmont on top, 12-3.  A strong defensive effort led to a 1-2-3 end to the Hilltoppers' half of the inning and secured the Bruin victory.

With the win, BU ties the program record for most consecutive wins to start a season.
Long and Wells led the Bruins at the plate, both going 3-for-4.  Four players notched two runs apiece with Deloney and Long tallying homeruns.  Rouse finished the day with four RBI.

Inside the circle, Morgan Marshall (Church Hill, Tenn.) notched her first collegiate win with five strikeouts.  Sophomore Ashley Johnson (Kingwood, Texas) came in for relief and recorded a strikeout.

Belmont returns to action tomorrow for the final day of the WKU Hilltopper Classic.  BU's first game is set for 10 a.m. versus Miami of Ohio.

UIC 2, EASTERN KENTUCKY 1; LIPSCOMB 15, EASTERN KENTUCKY 7
CHARLESTON, S.C. -
Freshman Mia Sanchez went 3-for-5 on the day to lead the Colonel offense, as the Eastern Kentucky University softball team lost to the University of Illinois Chicago and Lipscomb on the second day of the Wyndham Garden Cougar Classic.

Eastern (0-4, 0-0 Ohio Valley Conference) dropped the first game to UIC, 2-1, in extra innings. The teams held each other in check until the top of the eighth.

After a Sanchez single, sophomore Hannah Clark sent a grounder to second base, allowing Amber Murray to cross the plate for the Colonels and go up 1-0.

However, UIC plated two runs in the home half of the inning to seal the win.

In game two, Lipscomb took an early 4-0 lead but the Colonels answered with two runs in the top of the third to trim the lead. Eastern took advantage of two Lipscomb miscues as Murray scored on a throwing error before Sanchez rounded the bags on a mishandled ball.

The Bison plated four runs of their own in the third and fourth to extend their lead to 12-2. However, the Colonels’ offense found its rhythm in the final two innings, combining for five late runs.

In the fifth, an RBI groundout from Minogue gave the Colonels their first run of the inning, before Johnkyria Alston drove a two RBI double to center to score Sanchez and Krislyn Campos.

In the final frame, it was Minogue’s two RBI double to center that helped cut into the Lipscomb lead. However, the Bison lead was too much and Lipscomb added three insurance runs in the home half for the win.

The Colonels close out the event against Monmouth University Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.

JACKSONVILLE STATE 2, SOUTHERN MISS 0; JACKSONVILLE STATE 10, MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE 1
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -
Anna Chisolm's big day at the plate and a pair of pitching gems by Whitney Gillespie and Faith Sims keyed the Jacksonville State softball team in a pair of wins in the Southern Miss Black & Gold Classic on Saturday.

The Gamecocks (8-1) handed host Southern Miss a 2-0 defeat behind Gillespie's complete game shutout and then rode another complete game by Sims to upend Mississippi Valley State 10-1 in the finale. The two wins capped a perfect 4-0 weekend and extended the best start to a season since the 2006 team opened with an 8-1 record.

Chisolm, a sophomore from St. Louis, went 5-for-8 on the day with two homers, two doubles and six RBI. Over the weekend, she hit .615 (8-for-13) with six runs scored and two stolen bases. She paced an offense that hit .345 and outscored its opponents 28-8.

In the opener against the host Golden Eagles, Gillespie kept their batters handcuffed. The JSU ace held USM scoreless on just four hits and struck out two to improve to 3-1 on the season.

She got all the offense she needed in the fifth, when a two-out rally broke a scoreless tie. Emily Woodruff got it started with a double to right and then scored the game's first run on a triple by Taylor Sloan that found the gap in right center.

Gillespie got an insurance run in the top of the seventh, thanks to Chisolm's solo homer that also put a two-out run on the board. Gillespie sat the Golden Eagles down in order in the seventh to finish her third complete game in four starts in 2017.

JSU managed six hits against Southern Miss, two apiece from Chisolm and Woodruff. Kim Crowson took the tough-luck loss for USM after allowing a run on five hits in five innings of work. Samantha Robles tossed the other two innings, allowing a run on one hit - Chisolm's homer.

Chisolm picked up in the second game where she left off in the first, providing the bulk of the pop in a 10-1 rout of Mississippi Valley State. She drove in half of JSU's runs in a 3-for-4 game that saw her double twice and homer for the second time during the day.

After The Delta Devils took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, a throwing error allowed JSU to tie the game in the top of the second. Chisolm's first RBI of the game followed on a bases loaded walk that gave JSU a 2-1 lead.

She drove in the next two runs, too, thanks to a two-run double to left in the fourth, and then put the final two runs up with a two-run blast in the seventh.

She had three of JSU's 11 hits, while Leila Chambers and Cadi Oliver each had two. Chambers and Oliver had back-to-back doubles in JSU's five-run seventh, two of the team's six doubles in the game.

Sophomore Faith Sims settled in in the circle to toss a gem for JSU, holding the Delta Devils to a run on just three hits in the complete game. She struck out 10 batters to grab her first win of the season.

Rebekah Clin suffered the loss, recording all but one out in the game but allowing nine runs on 10 hits. Shyanne Down allowed the other run before getting the final out in the seventh.

JSU returns to action on Wednesday, when the Gamecocks travel to Atlanta to face Georgia Tech in a midweek game that will begin at 3 p.m. CT.
