LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Eastern Kentucky University soccer team fell, 3-1, at Kentucky on Thursday night at the Bell Soccer Complex.
Kentucky (1-2) struck early in the first half, when Foster Ignafoo converted off a breakaway inside the box. EKU freshman forward Kylie Thompson had a great shot on goal that would have evened the score in the 38th minute, but it failed to find the back of the net.
After the Wildcats’ early score, the Colonel defense settled in and held Kentucky scoreless for the next 37 minutes. However, UK eventually added two goals in the second half to pull away.
Senior forward Jordan Foster attempted to lead a late EKU charge when she converted her first goal of the season by beating the keeper and taking advantage of a two-on-one opportunity in the 83rd minute. The goal was assisted by freshman Sarah Owusu.
The Colonels recorded nine shots on the night, seven of which were on goal, a new season-high. Foster led all players with five shots, three of those being on goal. Senior forward Emmi Carroll, sophomore forward Sam Eastes, junior midfielder Bailly Bounds and Thompson each contributed one for Eastern.
Senior goalkeeper Anna Hall recorded a season-high six saves on the night, including one late in the game where she was drawn out from the net in a one-on-one situation.
Eastern (0-2-1) will now travel to Indianapolis to face IUPUI on Sunday. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
SIUE 1, WESTERN ILLINOIS 0
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - SIUE defeats Western Illinois in thrilling fashion in their home opener with a Courtney Benning goal in overtime.
Scoreless in regulation, SIUE finished the second half strong putting multiple shots on net. This was the Cougars first overtime game of the season.
The Cougars were threatening all game and in the first overtime they finally broke through.
Emily Grahl had the ball on the outside of the box, with nice cross in, Benning was able to bury it passed the keeper.
MacKenzie Litzsinger totaled three shots on the night, Caroline Hoefert shot once. Juli Rossi ended the game with nine saves.
SIUE outshot Western Illinois 14-9 and had six corners to the Leathernecks two.
The Cougars will host cross town rival Saint Louis next Thursday, August 31st at 7 p.m.
