TENNESSEE TECH 1, WESTERN CAROLINA 0
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -
The Tennessee Tech soccer team ensured that its 2017 home opener would be a success Sunday afternoon, as the Golden Eagles used a late goal and another stout defensive effort to push past Western Carolina, 1-0.

Sophomore Dani Shartouny buried an attempt in the 72nd minute for the tilt's lone score, while junior goalkeeper Kari Naerdemann and the rest of the Tech defense came up big to secure the club's second-consecutive shutout. The Golden Eagles (2-1-0) also run their win streak to two-straight, and take down the Catamounts (1-2-0) for the first time since 2000, snapping a four-match losing streak against WCU.

Tech has now won seven in a row in Cookeville dating back to last September.

Scoreless just over the midway point of the second half, freshman Kendall Powell played a pivotal role in jump starting the Golden Eagle offense. Playing in her first collegiate match at Tech Soccer Field, the Cookeville native took a through ball into the box and fended off both a defender and WCU goalkeeper Natalia Icen, before ultimately knocking one in the direction of a streaking Dani Shartouny, who took care of the rest.  Powell tallied her first career assist on the play, while Shatrouny's blast that split the back of the net was her first goal of the season, and fourth in the Tech tenure of the 5-foot-4 sophomore.

Kari Naerdemann made the slim lead stand up on her to way her 20th career shutout, further extending her program record. The Herne, Germany collected five saves on the afternoon, highlighted by a pair of outstanding stops that kept the Catamounts off the board.

In the 32nd minute with the match squared at 0-0, WCU's Emily Zipay found herself point blank with Naerdemann, only to have her rocket smoke off the hands of the 5-foot-9 keeper to keep the shutout preserved. Then with Tech clinging to a 1-0 edge in the 79th minute, another key Naerdemann halt on a free kick through traffic saved the day yet again.

Tech won the shot battle, 15-9, with six different Golden Eagles tabbing at least a pair. Junior Tina Marolt paced the club for the second time in three matches behind four shots. Senior Karigan Owens notched three attempts, while Dani Shartouny, junior Mayra Tarraga Manzanal, sophomore Nora Vicsek and Kendall Powell each had two.

Red-shirt senior Kasey Cooke led the Catamounts with two shots. WCU used a pair of goalkeepers in the match, as red-shirt sophomore Jacquelyn Gnassi blanked the Golden Eagles in the first half behind one save, before freshman Natalia Icen took over and made three second-half stops.

TTU will remain at home for the next two matches. The Golden Eagles will play host to Middle Tennessee on Friday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. CT, before welcoming Georgia State to Cookeville on Sunday, Sept. 3 at 1 p.m.

JACKSONVILLE STATE 0, GEORGIA STATE 0
JACKSONVILLE, Ala.
- For the second consecutive year Jacksonville State and Georgia State played to a scoreless draw as the two sides battled at the JSU Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Gamecocks finished the first full weekend at home with a 1-0-1 mark after topping Middle Tennessee on Friday evening.  JSU moved to 2-1-1 overall and will now play its next five matches away from Jacksonville, beginning next weekend in Mobile, Alabama.  Jax State's next home match will be Sunday, Sept. 17 against Ohio Valley Conference foe Tennessee Tech.  Last season, JSU and GSU played 110 minutes last season in Atlanta without a goal.

JSU and GSU have played 220 minutes without either program netting a goal, even though JSU had a plus-nine advantage in total shots and five great looks on goal.  JSU finished with 18 total shots, while limiting the Panthers to just nine shots on the day.  JSU looked to post a goal with 10 shots in the second half after holding GSU to three shots in the first half.  While GSU was credited with nine shots, it nearly matched that total in corner kicks, but was unsuccessful in producing a result on a set piece.

Sophomore Danielle Monroe, who had a pair of goals on Friday night, shared the team lead in total shots with four.  Freshman Kelly Snook, who made her first career start, had four chances as well.  Senior Claire Petersen had three total shots and two good looks on goal.  Freshman Chloe Doherty came off the bench to spark the Gamecocks offensively with three shots.

Senior goalkeeper Caroline Robinson added another shutout to her career total with the blanking.  She now has 11.5 career shutouts, ranking her third all-time at JSU.  The Hendersonville, Tennessee native had a pair of stops.

The Gamecocks will begin the extended road trip on Friday, taking on in-state nemesis Troy on the opening day of the South Alabama Invitational in Mobile.  JSU and the Trojans will start at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 1.  The Gamecocks wrap up the two-game weekend on Sunday against the Jaguars of South Alabama at 2:30 p.m.

WESTERN KENTUCKY 1, UT MARTIN 0
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -
An overtime thriller proved to be too much for the University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team to overcome as the Skyhawks fell 1-0 to Western Kentucky this afternoon.

Erica Myers was the standout for UT Martin (1-3) today as the freshman goalkeeper tallied eight saves, matching her career high set just two nights ago. The Holland, Ohio native was able to pick up three saves in the first period, four in the second and one in overtime before Western Kentucky (2-2) reeled off a long shot that floated into the net just out of Myers’ reach in the 94th minute.

Nicole Collins, Kamryn Chappell, Amy McGivern and Danae Kaldaridou each recorded a shot in the matchup against a stingy Western Kentucky defense. Three of the four Skyhawk shot attempts were placed on goal but unfortunately UT Martin could not find the back of the net.

Collins took UT Martin’s first shot of the match in the 10th minute as the Hilltoppers were able to record a save. The next Skyhawk shot came in the 27th minute when Chappell’s attempt would be deflected by a Western Kentucky defender and resulted in a corner kick. Kaldaridou (70th minute) and McGivern (88th minute) then found space for a shot attempt but both shots were saved.

Myers and Chappell were the only two Skyhawks to log all 94 minutes in the hard-fought battle against Western Kentucky.

UT Martin returns home as they face in-state rival Chattanooga on Friday, Sept. 1. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.

EASTERN KENTUCKY 3, IUPUI 2
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -
Senior Jordan Foster scored a dramatic golden goal in the 108th minute to lead the Eastern Kentucky University soccer team to a thrilling 3-2 win at IUPUI on Sunday afternoon at Michael A. Carter Stadium.

EKU (1-2-1) had already face one double-overtime game this season, resulting a in a scoreless draw at Chattanooga on August 20. Foster made sure this time was different. With less than three minutes remaining in the game, the first team All-OVC forward took advantage of an errant clearance and buried a shot from the top of the 18 to ignite the Colonel celebration.

Foster, EKU’s leading scorer last year, has now recorded a goal in two consecutive games. She broke the EKU single-season record with four game-winning goals last season.

It is EKU’s first win in a double-overtime game since Devon Saini scored a golden goal against Miami (Ohio) in 2011.

The Colonels started the game strong, as freshman Sarah Owusu scored her first collegiate goal in the 25th minute from eight yards out off an assist from sophomore Idalys Rea. Owusu did not play in EKU’s first two games but has already proven to be a dynamic offensive option off the bench. The native of Brampton, Ontario also assisted Foster’s goal at Kentucky on Thursday.

IUPUI (1-3-0), however, responded by scoring two goals over the next 10 minutes to promptly take the lead.

EKU clamped down after that spurt and stayed within striking distance. That strike finally came off the foot of senior Emmi Carroll in the 75th minute. Carroll scored off a free kick – her second free-kick goal of the season – to tie the game and send it into overtime.

EKU dominated the game statistically, firing 21 shots, seven of which were on goal. Foster led all players with seven shots, two of them being on target. Carroll and Owusu tallied four shots apiece, while junior midfielder Bailly Bounds recorded two. The Colonels also had seven corner kicks.

The Colonels will now travel to Cincinnati to take on Xavier next Friday, September 1st. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.

MURRAY STATE 2, SOUTH ALABAMA 0
MOBILE, Ala.
-  The red hot boot of Harriet Withers was in full effect, as her two goals were enough to push Murray State (3-0) over South Alabama (0-3) for a 2-1 final score.

With two goals today and five overall, Withers now has 30 career goals as a Racer. Her current total is just four behind the 34 scored by Theresa Reedy (2001-04), the current all-time goal scorer for Murray State. "It's tremendous to see how she's developed, you could tell in her first year she had potential." Said head coach Jeremy Graves in regards to Withers getting closer to the all-time scoring mark.

It wasn't the best start for the Racers, who let up 10 shots in the first frame of action against a Jaguars squad looking for their first win of the year. The first and only goal scored by South Alabama came 15 minutes in, as a foul in the box led to a successful penalty kick, giving the Jaguars an early lead.

A defensive miscue at the 35th gave the Racers hope, as a bad throw in allowed Withers time to collect the ball and power it through the top left corner to tie the match 1-1.

Using the momentum they gained in the first half, the Racers exploded for eight shots in the second half. They also locked down the defensive zone, limiting the Jaguars to two shots, one was blocked and the other an easy save.

It was once again an error by South Alabama that led to a Racer goal. An errant pass in the midfield was picked off by Withers who ran down the right side of the field, ripping a hard shot on the ground to beat the keeper, making it a 2-1 game for the Racers at the 67th minute.

Alex Steigerwald made a season high four saves as she picked up her third win of the season.

Murray State is back on the road, as their next game sees them travel to Highland Heights, KY. for a battle against Northern Kentucky on September 3 at 1 PM.

AUSTIN PEAY 1, LIPSCOMB 0
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -
Kirstin Robertson's 53rd-minute goal was all Austin Peay State University women's soccer needed to run its winning streak to three, with the Governors topping Lipscomb, 1-0, at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field, Sunday afternoon.

With the win, Austin Peay has now won three of four to start the 2017 campaign—the second consecutive year the Governors have won three of their first four contests.

Although possession was there in the attacking end for Austin Peay in the first half, the Governors did not pester Lipscomb with shots early, attempting just three in the opening 45 minutes. Meanwhile, the Bisons counter-attack led to seven first-half shots, including an early Jade Abarca attempt which was stopped by Mary Parker Powell and a 19th-minute shot from Natalie Duboise that saw her run unabated and fire from just outside the 18-yard box; fortunately for the Governors, Duboise's attempt hit the cross bar and was cleared away.

Austin Peay's lone first-half attempt on frame was a laser from freshman Jade Dauriat, who squared up from 30 yards away and forced a leaping save from Lipscomb's Kate Mason.

In the second half, Austin Peay's offense roared to life, peppering the Lipscomb side with 11 shots and forcing six saves. Much of that was due to the presence of Robertson, a fixture in the Lipscomb third for much of the match. She led all players with five shots (three on goal) and the game's lone goal. Less than eight minutes into the second period, she collected a Claire Larose pass, beat her marker and chipped the ball over the keeper's head and in for her season's third goal in four games.

As the match neared its conclusion, Lipscomb stepped up its attack. In the 82nd minute, Brooke Brenner's strike was turned aside by Powell, preserving the win and the first clean sheet of Powell's APSU career.

With classes opening up on the APSU campus, the Govs will take the week to get acclimated before hosting Georgia State, 7 p.m., Friday, at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field.

BELMONT 5, TENNESSEE WESLEYAN 0
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
The Belmont women's soccer offense matched the blazing hot weather Sunday afternoon at E.S. Rose Park as the Bruins posted a 5-0 victory over Tennessee Wesleyan.  Their scoring efforts were backed up by a pair of multi-goal performances from senior Belicia Mendiola (McKinney, Texas) and freshman Halle Krebs (Lakewood, Ohio) as they move to 3-0 for the first time since 2007.

BU came out firing and never backed down, holding the Bulldogs to a measly three shots while launching 29 of its own and landing 17 on goal. Among their 17 shots on frame, five found the back of the net – the most goals they've scored since 2013.

While the Bruins finished the match with five goals, the game was close for the first stanza where they carried a 1-0 advantage into halftime. Their lone goal came in the 20th minute when Mendiola and fellow senior Tara Austin (Beumont, Texas) shared the ball a few times before she found an opening and lobbed one over Tennessee Wesleyan's goalie, McKenna Loges.

The McKinney, Texas product pushed Belmont's lead to 2-0 early in the second frame after Tennessee Wesleyan was punished with a handball, awarding BU with a penalty kick. Mendiola took one swipe and sent the ball past Loges for the second time on the day.

Tennessee Wesleyan once again found itself at a disadvantage when they were issued a red card in the 75th minute, putting them down a man for the rest of the match. From then on Belmont turned it up a notch and registered its final three goals in an 11-minute span.

Krebs struck first after making a run down the field and sending in her first career goal from the top of the 18-yard box. Four minutes later another rookie found the back of the net as Sydney Cason (Hendersonville, Tenn.) headed in a perfectly placed cross from Kameron Ziesig (Brentwood, Tenn.) to put Belmont up, 4-0.

The Bruins continued to take advantage with numbers in their favor as Krebs delivered the fifth and final goal in the 86th minute. She placed the ball perfectly in the top right corner of the frame, squeezing the ball past Loges to trigger her second score of the evening.

It wasn't just in the attacking third that BU dominated, but it also limited the chances TWU had to get in the game. Not only did the team keep Tennessee Wesleyan to only three shots, but they only allowed two to fall on frame – both of which game from Livia Walker.

Belmont concludes its four-game home stand next Friday, Sept. 1 as they host in-state foe the Tennessee Volunteers. The match is slated to start at 4 p.m. at E.S. Rose Park.
