MISSISSIPPI STATE 3, SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 1
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Southeast Missouri soccer (3-4) fell to undefeated Mississippi State (6-0) Friday afternoon, 3-1.
Southeast played the Bulldogs well despite playing the away game on short notice, scheduling the contest less than 48 prior to kickoff.
The Redhawks were outshot in the game, 17-9, but it was a tale of two halves. Southeast was outshot in the first half 10-4 but came out in the second half to hold MSU to seven shots while increasing the offense to five shots, including a goal by Maddy Cornell.
Esmie Gonzales led the way offensively for the Redhawks, taking four shots, placing one on goal, and recording her second assist of the season.
Hannah Compernolle, Maddi Karstens, and Lauren Kaempfe played the full 90 minutes of Friday's matchup.
Kindra Lierz (2-4) suffered the loss in goal. The senior gave up three goals but made four stops against the Bulldogs. She continues to climb the all-times saves list, needing just 11 to break the career record.
Catalina Perez (6-0) recorded the win for State. She allowed Cornell's second-half goal and made two saves. Cornell's goal was only the fourth goal Perez and the Bulldogs have allowed in six contests.
The Bulldogs drew four yellow cards and were called for 12 fouls as a team in the contest.
State scored the go-ahead goal in the 12th minute. Brooke McKee headed her third goal of the season over Lierz to put State in front, 1-0. Mallory Eubanks picked up the assist.
Dexter, Missouri native MaKayla Waldner extended the lead to 2-0 in the 22nd minute when she picked up a double pass from Gabrella Coleman and McKee and shot the ball into the left-hand side of the net.
Southeast was outshot in the first half, 10-4, but the Bulldogs only put one more shot on goal, 3-2. Gonzales owned two of SEMO's shots in the half.
The Bulldogs added to the lead in the 65th minute on a miscue by Lierz. As she attempted to clear the ball out of the box, her kick deflected off Payton Gruenewald and trickled back into the net for Mississippi State's third goal.
Southeast jumped on the board in the 71st minute. Katie Lever took a corner kick and passed it to Gonzales. Gonzales took the ball and crossed to the far side of the goal to a waiting Cornell who pushed the ball into the corner of the net to break up the shutout, 3-1. It was Cornell's second goal of her senior season.
In the 77th minute, Waldner missed a penalty kick high to keep the score at 3-1.
The Redhawks open Ohio Valley Conference play next Friday at home against Tennessee Tech. That game is slated for a 6:30 p.m. start at Houck Field.
GARDNER WEBB 2, EASTERN KENTUCKY 0
RICHMOND, Ky. - The Eastern Kentucky University soccer team dropped its home opener, 2-0, to Gardner-Webb on Friday afternoon at EKU Soccer Field.
The game was scoreless at the half; however, Gardner-Webb finally broke through in the 61st minute when Jana Braun took a pass from Stina Kleppe and fired in a goal from eight yards out.
The Bulldogs added an insurance score in the 74th minute when Ty Snell took advantage of a failed clearance and buried a shot from six yards out.
Senior Jordan Foster and freshman Sarah Owusu both put shots on target in the final 10 minutes, but GWU keeper Keely Brown denied both to preserve the win.
Both teams attempted eight shots in the game, and EKU (2-3-1) attempted two more corner kicks than GWU; however, it was the Bulldogs that took advantage of their chances.
Foster led all players on the day with five shots, while Owusu, junior Idalys Rea and freshman Katie Shaffer all attempted one.
Shaffer and junior Kacy Eckley both played all 90 minutes on the backline for EKU.
EKU returns to action on Tuesday, September 12, when the Colonels host East Tennessee State at 5:00 p.m.
EASTERN ILLINOIS 3, FORT WAYNE 2
CHARLESTON, Ill. - Itxaso Aguero hit an indirect kick off the post in the 103rd minute that bounced around the goal box for a few seconds before Kate Olson was able to head in the golden goal giving Eastern Illinois a 3-2 victory over Fort Wayne on Friday afternoon at Lakeside Field.
EIU improved to 4-2-1 on the season and will host Western Illinois on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. Fort Wayne fell to 0-6 on the season.
EIU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half scoring both goals roughly two minutes apart. Henar Urteaga scored the Panthers first goal as she beat a defender and then the Fort Wayne goalkeeper on a scramble for a ball sent into the goal box by Ali Carlson. The goal was scored in the 35th minute.
Hannah Heinz found the back of the net for the second straight game two minutes and three seconds later as she had a one touch goal off an assist sent into the box by Kayla Stolfa. Stolfa is coming off a match on Sunday in which she set the EIU record for assists in a game while tying the Ohio Valley Conference record with four. Stolfa is the reigning OVC Defender of the Week.
Fort Wayne did not go away as the Mastodons continued to apply pressure on EIU goalkeeper Maddie Lyon in the second half. Chloee Foor dribbled a ball from the left side and drove to the middle of the goal box and beat the keeper with a high left shot in the 79th minute.
The Mastodons evened the match at 2-2 just 28 seconds later as Jessica Schoenfeldt scored on a head flick from a cross sent in by Kallianne Mogler.
Late in the match both teams added additional shots. EIU finished the match with ten shots on goal and 18 overall shots. Fort Wayne had seven shots on goal and 16 overall shots.
JACKSONVILLE STATE 2, ULM 0
MONROE, La. - Jacksonville State registered a pair of goals in the second half to propel JSU to a 2-0 win on the road at Louisiana Monroe on Friday afternoon at the ULM Soccer Complex.
The blanking pushed the Gamecocks' record to 3-2-2 overall and the first result away from Jacksonville for the club. The Warhawks dropped to 0-7 on the season with the setback.
After a scoreless 64 minutes, JSU tallied the first goal of the final 45 minutes after ULM failed to clear a cross from the left side and the ball squeaked past the Warhawks' keeper. Sophomore Danielle Monroe, who played a part in ULM's own goal, collected her fifth goal of the season seven minutes later after dribbling past the ULM defense and striking the ball to the left corner of the net. Monroe was one of three Jax State players with multiple shot opportunities with two. JSU freshman Kelly Snook collected three shots to lead all players. Sophomore Rachel Blanding came off the bench for a pair of shots.
The Gamecocks finished with a 12-4 advantage in shots. Along with producing the two goals in the second half, JSU's defense was stifling as ULM had one shot attempt in the half. JSU finished with seven chances in the second half.
Senior goalkeeper Caroline Robinson continues to post clean worksheets with her third shutout of the season and third in the last four matches. Robinson was credited with one save in the full contest and faced seven shots total. The Hendersonville, Tennessee native now has 13.5 career shutouts.
JSU will look to carry the momentum of its second half performance on Sunday as it travels to Ruston, Louisiana on Sunday to face Louisiana Tech. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
MURRAY STATE 4, LITTLE ROCK 3
MURRAY, Ky. - The Murray State Racers (5-0) only needed a small portion of overtime to get the job done, as Harriet Withers struck a ball at the 20 yard mark into the top right corner of the net to secure a 4-3 victory over Little Rock (3-3) just 50 seconds into the extra frame at Cutchin Field in Murray, Ky..
It was the Racers who took an early 1-0 advantage over the Trojans at the 16 minute mark as Aaron Lankster received a pass from Miyah Watford and struck it from the right side of the box, seeing it ping off the left post and trickle in for her first goal of the year. 12 minutes went by before another Racer struck the back of the net. Rebecca Kubin scored her second of the year at the 28 minute mark. Watford got another assist, crossing a ball in to Kubin who put it over the shoulder of the keeper to make it a 2-0 game.
Late into the first half, the Trojans struck back, as Doro Greulich scored her first of three goals against the Racers, taking a shot from a bad angle near the goal line, and seeing it bounce off the gloves of Alex Steigerwald to cut the lead to one with four minutes to go.
Fourteen minutes into the second frame, the Racers added another goal to their tally. An errant goal kick off a Trojan defender was enough for Withers to race towards the keeper and tuck a hard shot to the left post, making it a 3-1 game for Murray State.
It was once again Greulich scoring late for Little Rock, this time getting a corner kick and converting it into a goal to make it a one goal game once again with 13 minutes left in the match. Not wanting to go down without a fight, the Trojans struck again just three minutes later. A free kick at the top of the box taken by Greulich connected off the left post and rolled left to right across the goal line to make it a 3-3 contest.
This was the first time the Racers had to battle in overtime this season, and it was probably the quickest OT period either team has been a part of in a long time. Just 50 seconds in, a beautiful pass from Watford found Withers alone on the left side of the field. Taking the time and space given to her by the Trojans, Withers took a hard shot around 20 yards out, tucking it into the upper part of the net to end the contest and give the Racers their fifth win in a row.
With her two goals scored against Little Rock, Withers stands just one goal away from tying the all-time career goal mark of 34. Theresa Reedy, who graduated in 2004 is the current record holder Along with that, Withers is now tied with Hayley Younginer of Wofford for first in the nation for total goals with eight.
Totaling three assists in the contest, Watford is now tied for the most assists in a single game by a Racer. Rebecca Bjorkvall was the last Racer to reach this mark back in 2013. It has been done now five times in MSU history.
Steigerwald picked up her fifth win of the year, making six saves in the process.
It's back on the road for the Racers, as they face their first conference opponent of the year with a trip to Morehead State to face the Eagles on Thursday, (Sept. 14) at 5 P.M. Central Time.
BELMONT 3, UIC 0
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Belmont women's soccer found its rhythm in the second frame scoring three unanswered goals to shutout UIC, 3-0, Friday night at E.S. Rose Park. Senior forward Belicia Mendiola (McKinney, Texas) put the cherry on top of an exciting match, sending in the Bruins third goal as time expired.
BU (4-2-0) continued to struggle to reignite their high-octane offense in the first 45 minutes, before heating up and producing their third three-goal match of the season. The squad pieced together a solid outing in the end, as their defense also made crucial stops throughout the match to keep UIC (2-5-0) from scoring.
It appeared as if BU would have their best chance of the match when freshman forward Sydney Cason (Hendersonville, Tenn.), who earned her first career start as Bruin, got fouled in the penalty box during the 52nd minute. Mendiola took the penalty kick, but met her match in UIC goalkeeper Annie Dicanio who read the ball perfectly and rejected Belmont's chance of taking the lead.
Still scoreless in the 66th minute, junior Megan Michela (Carol Stream, Ill.) finally found the answer to the Flames stifling defense. The midfielder corralled a rebound that had deflected off a UIC defender and sent the ball rolling past Dicanio's outstretched arms to put BU up, 1-0. Michela's goal ended Belmont's 250-minute scoreless droubt.
Instead of sitting back and defending their goal for the final 24 minutes, the Bruins continued to pressure the Flames as rookie Halle Krebs (Lakewood, Ohio) tallied her third goal of the season. Krebs received a perfectly placed thru ball from junior Jessi Boozer (Brentwood, Tenn.) and worked her way past the keeper to double BU's advantage, 2-0, in the 78th minute.
The Bruins got out to a slower start than usual, not registering a shot until 14 minutes in when senior midfielder Tara Austin (Beaumont, Texas) set up and launched a shot from 20 yards out, landing the ball on frame and forcing Dicanio to make her first save of the half. Belmont settled in and would send two more shots on goal within a five minute span in the first stanza, but would come up scoreless.
In the midst of BU's shooting frenzy, sophomore goalkeeper Lily Herman (Springboro, Ohio) was put to the test on the other end of the field. A Flames attacker cleared the Bruins backline and sent a bullet inside the goalies box, forcing Herman to make a diving save. Herman's save would prove to be the difference maker in the first half as neither team would find the back of the net. Herman would go on to make five saves on the evening.
As time expired, Mendiola fired a Hail Mary shot from nearly 35 yards out and ended up placing the ball perfectly in the upper 90 right corner of the frame, giving Dicanio no chance of making the last stop. The veteran's goal came with just one second remaining on the clock, leaving Belmont with the 3-0 victory.
Belmont will close out its nonconference slate at UAB on Sunday, Sept. 10 at BBVA Compass Field. First touch is slated for 1 p.m.
UAB 2, TENNESSEE TECH 0
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Two first-half UAB goals spelled trouble for the Tennessee Tech soccer team, as a pair of Blazer scores in the opening period proved to be the difference in a 2-0 defeat for the Golden Eagles. UAB becomes the first team to find the back of the net in regulation in five matches against Tech (3-2-0) this season, snapping TTU's three-match winning streak in the process.
The Blazers (5-1-1) split the pipes twice in the span of eight minutes midway through the opening stanza, kick started by a 19th minute goal by sophomore Megan Hudgens that unwrapped the scoring. The Alpharetta, Ga. native received a pair of passes from Caroline Kehrer and Rachel Green, before her shot from inside the box snuck inside the far post to give UAB a 1-0 edge. Kehrer and Green both earned assists on the play.
Shortly after in the 27th minute, Kehrer took matters into her own hands, padding the 1-0 lead with her third goal of the year. The 5-foot-9 junior headed in a cross from fellow junior Jessica Do to double up the Blazers advantage at 2-0.
Despite the two goals allowed, the Golden Eagles still possessed the first-period shot advantage with a slim 5-4 cushion.
Tech came out scorching in the second half in its bid at a comeback, tallying four shots within the first 12 minutes, three of which were on-goal. Sophomore Dani Shartouny attempted a pair within the first seven minutes, both gobbled up UAB goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty.
The Blazers did not take their first shot in the second half until a shade over 20 minutes into the period, a Jamiera Lunsford try that missed wide. UAB's first shot on-goal in the closing stanza did not occur until the 82nd minute, another Lunsford attempt that was halted by Kari Naerdemann.
Naerdemann would end up with four saves in the match, stopping all four attempts that came her way after the two UAB goals. On the other side of the equation, Daugherty mirrored Naerdemann's four saves with four of her own en route to the Blazers third shutout of the year.
Tech held the shot advantage, 11-9, led by three from both Mayra Tarraga Manzanal and Dani Shartouny. Lunsford and Morgan Key-Adams paced the UAB attack with three attempts apiece.
The Golden Eagles will continue their longest road swing of the year Sunday evening, traveling to the University of Alabama for a 5 p.m. CT first kick with the Crimson Tide.
SIUE 0, COLORADO STATE 0
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - SIUE women's soccer draws 0-0 with Colorado State despite numerous shots.
The Cougars shot 18 times with 11 of those on goal. Each team had great looks on net with Colorado State shooting 16 times.
SIUE looked to score multiple times in the first half with eight shots being put up.
Andrea Frerker tallied five shots on the day with Peyton Roehnelt shooting three times.
Juli Rossi finished the game with eight saves, two coming in the second overtime.
Emily Grahl and Rossi played all 110 minutes for the Cougars.
The Cougars are back at home on Sunday when they will face Missouri State at 1 p.m.
ARKANSAS STATE 2, UT MARTIN 0
MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team outshot Arkansas State 22-13 but fell 2-0 this evening at Skyhawk Field.
UT Martin (2-4-2) was able to get off just five shots in the first period before turning up the heat on the Red Wolves (4-2) in the second half by firing off 17 shots.
Katelyn Colvin led the Skyhawks in the shots column this evening (four shots, two on goal) with Nicole Collins, Alice Adams and Isabella Roberts tallying three shots apiece. Reigning Ohio Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week recipient Amy McGivern chipped in two shots as did Sara Ketis. Maggie Burkett, Danae Kaldaridou, Miah Olaleye, Kamryn Chappell and Jacalyn Schubring all recorded one shot in the bout.
Erica Myers logged all 90 minutes in goal tonight, snagging seven saves in the match with two goals allowed.
UT Martin found itself at an early disadvantage as Arkansas State’s Victoria MacIntosh netted a goal at the 13:45 mark. That was the only blemish for the Skyhawk defense in the first 45 minutes as Myers made five saves in the first half to keep the score 1-0 at the break.
Olaleye almost evened the score in the 30th minute but her shot from 40 yards hit the crossbar. UT Martin kept firing attempts in an effort to tie the match but could not sneak one past Arkansas State goalkeeper Kelsey Ponder.
MacIntosh then provided the final goal of the match in the 86th minute. The Skyhawks would add three more shots in the final three minutes but could not find the back of the net.
UT Martin returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 10 as it travels to Cullowhee, NC to take on the Western Carolina Catamounts. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
AUSTIN PEAY 3, MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE 0
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Austin Peay State University women's soccer improved to 4-2 with a dominant 3-0 win over Mississippi Valley State at home Friday night.
The Govs broke through early when freshman Morgan Drawdy picked off an attempted clearance placing it cleanly in the back of the net for her first Governor's goal. Austin Peay set up camp in the offensive third, but was unable to get a clean look at goal until a set piece just outside the 18-yard-box. Sophomore Pamela Penaloza tapped the ball back to senior Kirstin Robertson who sent a laser past Devilettes keeper Rita Gyasi.
The Govs continued to pressure Mississippi Valley State in the second half. Austin Peay fired off 10 shots before a free kick in the 83rd minute opened the door for freshman Goodwin Brown to send a cross into Penaloza, who scored her first goal of the season on a shot to the lower right corner.
With Sophomore Mary Parker Powell and Senior Lindsey Todd leading a strong defense the Govs earned their second season's shutout and a Senior Night win.
The Govs will return to Morgan Brothers Field 1 p.m. Sunday for the season's final nonconference game of the season against Arkansas-Little Rock.
