SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 63, CHATTANOOGA 42
MOBILE, Ala. - Southeast Missouri men's basketball (3-2) dispatched Chattanooga (2-3), 63-42, Saturday afternoon at Mitchell Arena to improve to 2-0 at the Goldie and Herman Ungar Classic.
Southeast is now on a three-game winning streak.
Skyler Hogan led the team with a career-best 15 points in 29 minutes on the court and Ledarrius Brewer chipped in 11 in the victory.
The Mocs opened the contest with back-to-back three pointers before Hogan drilled a three to cut the early deficit to 8-7. Brewer then slammed a dunk to pull the Redhawks ahead, 9-8, as Chattanooga took a timeout.
Alex Caldwell added a jumper with six seconds remaining in the opening half to extend the Redhawks advantage to 26-17.
Hogan paced SEMO with 10 points and made both of his three-point attempts in the first frame.
In the second half, the Redhawks grew their advantage to 19 points, 37-18, on a layup from Hogan at the 14:37 mark.
Brewer then posted a lay-up in the paint with 5:36 remaining in the contest to push the advantage to 51-27.
SEMO had it highest advantage (61-34) in the game of 27 after Gabe McGlothan sunk a free throw with 1:08 left in regulation.
TENNESSEE STATE 113, FISK 61
NASHVILLE - The Tennessee State men’s basketball team’s high-octane offense was on full display on Saturday night in a dominating 113-61 victory over crosstown opponent Fisk at the Gentry Center in the Battle of Jefferson Street. Saturday marked the first time TSU scored 100-plus points in a regular season game since a 108-85 win over Fisk on Dec. 15, 2013.
Redshirt junior guard Tripp Davis scored a game-high 24 points on the night for TSU (2-0), quadrupling his previous career high of six points set earlier this season at Fisk.
TSU also received double-digit scoring efforts from Kamar McKnight (18), Armani Chaney (12) and Michael Littlejohn (11).
The Tigers held a 63-27 halftime edge and cruised in the second half, outscoring Fisk (1-5) by a 50-34 margin in the second half.
TSU dominated on the glass, outrebounding Fisk 59-26 led by seven boards from Stokley Chaffee Jr.
EASTERN ILLINOIS 68, WESTERN ILLINOIS 66 (OT)
CHARLESTON, Ill. - Ben Harvey collected an offensive rebound and put-back basket with 37 seconds left to give Eastern Illinois a one-point lead in overtime. Following two misses by Western Illinois and a free throw by the Panthers, Eastern Illinois walked away with a 68-66 win over Western Illinois in the Old Railsplitter Axe Rivalry Game on Saturday night in Lantz Arena.
EIU improved to 1-2 on the season and will play three games over Thanksgiving weekend at the visitcurrituckOBX.com Battle in the Blue Ridge Tournament in Asheville, N.C. WIU fell to 2-2 on the season.
WIU opened the overtime period on a 6-1 run on 3-pointers by C.J. Duff and Isaac Johnson. The Panthers chipped away at the lead with free throws by Shareef Smith with 2:04 to play and a jumper by Rade Kukobat with 1:20 left to play.
Leading by one with 51 seconds remaining, WIU the nation’s top free throw shooting team entering the contest, missed back-to-back free throws. Harvey pulled down the defensive rebound on the second miss and then found the offensive board on a missed EIU shot on the right hand side of the lane, putting the shot back up for the game winner. Harvey posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Western Illinois held a 38-34 lead at the half. In the second half the Leathernecks led by as many as five points when Duff drained a jumper with 17:25 to play in regulation that gave WIU a 41-36 lead. Duff was one of three WIU players in double figures with 16 points.
EIU was able to take the lead twice in the second half on a 3-pointer by Shareef Smith with 7:45 to play and 3-pointer by Mack Smith with 4:37 to play. EIU was 7-of-25 from 3-point range as a team. Shareef Smith had 12 points. Josiah Wallace led EIU with 13 points.
The two teams had ten ties in regulation. Kobe Webster had a shot to win it in regulation for WIU that fell short. Webster had a game-high 18 points. Johnson had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Brandon Gilbeck narrowly missed a triple-double as he pulled down 19 rebounds to go along with nine points and nine blocked shots.
EIU won the battle on the glass by a 48-47 margin with 14 offensive rebounds leading to 15 second chance points. JaQualis Matlock had nine rebounds.
NORTHERN IOWA 90, EASTERN KENTUCKY 85
ST. THOMAS, V.I. - The Eastern Kentucky University men's basketball team staged a furious late charge; however, Northern Iowa was able to hold on for a 90-85 win over the Colonels on Saturday night at the 2018 U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam.
EKU (2-3) trailed by 16 – 82-66 – with just over four minutes to play in the game. However, the Colonels exploded on a 12-0 run over the next 1:44 to trim the lead to four. A three-point play by junior Kelvin Robinson ignited the run, six consecutive points from junior Lachlan Anderson sustained it, and a three-pointer from the wing by sophomore Peyton Broughton capped it. Broughton's triple made it 82-78 with 2:18 showing on the clock.
Northern Iowa (2-2) got a bucket on the other end to stretch the lead back out to six, but the Colonels still were not done.
Senior Nick Mayo responded by banking in a driving layup. On EKU's next possession, he buried a deep three-pointer to make it a one-point game, 84-83, with just over a minute to play.
The Colonels had a chance to take the lead. Anderson came up with a steal on the other end of the court. He fed it to Broughton on the break, but Broughton's contested layup rimmed out.
Northern Iowa's A.J. Green then converted a three-point play to make it 87-83 with 25 seconds remaining, and the Colonels never got closer than four the rest of the way.
Mayo finished the night with 27 points and six rebounds. He was one of five Colonels in double figures.
Anderson tallied 14 points and six boards in the game. Robinson added 12 points and a team-best six assists. Broughton scored 12 points on 3-of-6 shooting from deep.
Freshman Tre King, meanwhile, came off the bench and provided a much-needed spark in the first half. He finished with a career-high 12 points and three rebounds.
The Colonels connected on a season-best 13 three-pointers in the loss.
EKU out-rebounded Northern Iowa, 41-34; however, the Colonels lost the turnover battle, 15-12. UNI converted those 15 EKU turnovers into 23 points.
GREEN BAY 87, MOREHEAD STATE 70
CHENEY, Wash. - Morehead State's junior guard Jordan Walker hit all 12 of his free throws and scored a season-high 25 points, but it wasn't enough to offset a hot night shooting from Green Bay as the Phoenix canned 12 three-pointers to defeat the Eagles 87-70 Saturday in the 2K Cheney Subregional title matchup.
Walker, who is now 24-for- 25 from the charity stripe this season, was one of four Eagles (2-3) in double figures in the point column. But, Green Bay nailed 13-of-25 three-balls, including 5-of-7 from JayQuan McCloud for his team-high 23 points.
Senior forward Lamontray Harris constructed his third double-double of the year and second in as many days with a career-high 16 rebounds (seven offensive) and 12 points. Junior guard Djimon Henson added 11 points off the bench, while senior guard A.J. Hicks contributed 10 points and a team-high six assists.
The Eagles out-rebounded GB 41-40, but fell behind 38-30 by halftime and trailed by as much as 18 in the second half.
While the Phoenix were hitting on all strides from beyond the three-point arc, MSU found difficult at just 5-of-26 for the game. The Eagles had drilled 15 trios in their win against UMKC Friday.
Morehead State wrapped up the contest hitting 36 percent (24-of-67).
