INDIANA STATE 10, EASTERN ILLINOIS 8
CHARLESTON, Ill. - Indiana State used a number of multi-run innings to take the midweek tilt against Eastern Illinois. Indiana State was able to hold of EIU defeating the Panthers 10-8.
With the loss EIU dropped to 8-11 on the season, while Indiana State improved to 12-5.
The Sycamores were able to jump out to an 8-0 lead before the Panthers put some pressure on Indiana State midway through the contest. Tyler Whitbread got the start on the mound for Indiana State. Whitbread earned himself the win, advancing his record to 1-1 on the season. Whitbread tossed 3.0 innings, with six strikeouts, four walks, two runs, and a hit.
Dustin Wilson suffered the loss for the Panthers on the hill this afternoon allowing four runs (3 ER) in 1.2 innings.
EIU was able to cut the lead down to two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning with a six run rally. The highlights of the rally featured a pair of homeruns. Matt Albert got the Panthers on the board launching a three run homer to left field. After a Logan Beaman double, Josh Turnock would blast the Panthers second home run of the inning launching a two run shot to right center.
The Sycamores answered back in the top of the sixth inning adding two runs to extend their lead to 10-6.
In the bottom of the seventh the Panthers once again put pressure on the Indiana State pitching staff scoring two runs. Logan Beaman became the first Panther to reach a base in the bottom of the seventh when he reached on a fielding error by Jake Means. Ryan Knernschield would follow up with a double to left center, which advanced Beaman to third. The Sycamores would gain their second error of the inning when Turnock reached on a throwing error by Clay Dungan. Beaman was able to score on the play cutting the Indiana State lead to 10-8.
Ethan Larrison earned his sixth save of the year for Indiana State as he was able to shut down the Panther offense for 2.2 innings. Larrison had four strikeouts and surrendered a hit.
Turnock finished 2-for-5 on the day with four RBIs, a home run, walk, and run. Dougie Parks finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, walk, and run. Beaman finished 2-for-4 with two runs, a double, and walk. Matt Albert went 1-for-4 with three RBIs, a home run, walk, and run.
MISSOURI STATE 10, SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 5
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Justin Dirden went 3-for-4 with a home run and Trevor Ezell collected the 200th hit of his career as Southeast Missouri (7-15) lost to Missouri State (12-6), 10-5, Tuesday at Hammons Field.
Ezell's two-out, two-RBI double in the top of the fifth inning officially marked the 200th hit of his career and tied the game at 4-4.
SEMO took the lead on Dirden's leadoff solo home run in the top of the sixth inning. For Dirden, it was his fourth round-tripper of the season.
MSU answered with a run of its own to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth and then pulled away for good with five runs in the seventh inning.
The Redhawks used nine different pitchers and issued a season-high 14 walks in the game.
Matthew Wade (0-2) was charged with the loss giving up two runs and two walks in a third of an inning.
Logan Winder made his first career midweek start, striking out eight in 3.2 innings. Winder also walked five, gave up four runs and scattered three hits before leaving the game after 3.2 innings.
Cody Creed, Wesley Pyles, Ashton Holyfield, Ryan Losman, Matt Cook, Chase Hagerty and Nathan Bock also took the mound for the Redhawks.
Nate Witherspoon (1-0) picked up the win for MSU. Witherspoon allowed two hits, walked one and struck out one in three scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Both teams finished with eight hits. Alex Nielsen and Chase Urhahn added two hits apiece behind Dirden's three-hit performance. Additionally, Ezell reached 100 RBI in his college career.
SOUTHERN ILLINOIS 8, SIUE 3
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - SIU Carbondale scored six times in the second inning and held on for an 8-3 win over SIUE in nonconference baseball at Simmons Complex Tuesday.
The Cougars fell to 5-13 overall. SIU Carbondale improved to 10-11. The meeting was the first for the sister schools in baseball since 2010.
After Brock Weimer gave SIUE a lead with an RBI-double in the first inning, SIUC used three hits, four walks from SIUE starter David Llorens, and an SIUE error to capitalize for six runs. Just three of the runs were earned.
Llorens struck out the side in order in his first inning. He worked only two innings and fanned five for the game. He fell to 0-2 with the loss.
The Cougar bullpen, comprised of Tyler Hutchinson, Devin Colley and Brock Fulkerson limited the Salukis to just two runs, one earned on six hits over the final seven innings.
SIUE scored single runs in the second and sixth innings. Aaron Goecks homered in the second. Aaron Jackson added a pinch-hit, RBI-single in the sixth.
Weimer finished with two hits to lead the Cougars.
MOREHEAD STATE 7, ALABAMA STATE 5
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - After losing the lead in the eighth inning, the Morehead State baseball team dug deep for three runs and held on to defeat host Alabama State 7-5 Tuesday at the Wheeler-Watkins Complex.
The game, originally set to be played in Morehead but moved for weather, sent the Eagles to their fifth consecutive victory. MSU is now 12-9.
MSU fell behind 5-4 heading into the top of the ninth, but pinch hitter Jake Hammon lit a fire under the Eagles' offense by crushing a leadoff triple off the right field wall. Junior shortstop Reid Leonard then poked a single through the right side to tie the game, and senior outfielder Tyler Niemann gave his team the lead for good with a double down the right field line to score Leonard from first base. Junior first baseman Trevor Snyder, who finished with three RBI, added an insurance run with a sac fly.
The Eagles then had to stave off a potential rally by the Hornets as closer Dom Masullo loaded the bases, but lefty reliever David Looney closed the door with a strike out and a line out to left field to seal the win and his first career save.
Niemann's RBI single and Snyder's two-run double pushed the Eagles to a 3-0 lead in the third inning, and MSU potentially could have had at least two more if not for an unfortunate hit that banged off a moving runner going to second base.
Alabama State scored twice in the bottom of the third, but Satterly locked down and pitched the next 3.2 innings while only allowing one run. Senior left-fielder Eli Boggess scored the fourth run when he singled, stole second and later scored on a wild pitch from third base.
Conway was credited with the victory to improve to 2-0.
Of the Eagles' 13 hits, Niemann, Boggess, senior second baseman Braxton Morris and junior center-fielder Connor Pauly had two each. Morris extended his hitting streak to 16 games.
KANSAS STATE 15, AUSTIN PEAY 10
MANHATTAN, Kan. - Catcher Alex Sala hit his season’s first home run and Austin Peay State University’s baseball team pounded out 18 hits but it wasn’t enough in a 15-10 nonconference loss to Kansas State, Tuesday night at Tointon Family Stadium.
For the fourth straight game, Austin Peay (13-8) found itself trailing after the first inning. Kansas State batted in four runs in the bottom of the first – three scoring on designated hitter Jordan Maxson’s single aided by a Governors error.
And like the three games prior to Tuesday’s affair, the Governors forged a come-from-behind effort to take the lead early. Austin Peay struck for five runs with two outs in the fourth inning – Sala’s two-run home run highlighting the outburst as the Govs took a 6-5 lead.
Kansas State (12-8) regained the lead with two runs in its half of the fourth, Maxson again giving the Wildcats a 7-6 lead with his sacrifice fly. Austin Peay would rally again to tie the game, 7-7, in the fifth as Sala doubled and then scored on a KSU defensive miscue.
The Wildcats took control in their half of the fifth, striking for five runs in the frame to take a commanding 12-7 lead. Shortstop Cameron Thompson supplied a two-run double and right fielder Hanz Harker capped the burst with a three-run home run.
Austin Peay would edge closer – scoring two runs in the seventh on shortstop Garrett Kueber’s bases-loaded single and adding another run on another Kansas State miscue in the ninth—but could not close the gap.
Sala finished with a triple shy of the cycle in his 3-for-5, two RBI outing. Giovannelli and Kueber each had four hit days, Giovannelli scoring four times in a 4-for-6 outing while Kueber drove in two runs in his 4-for-4 effort.
Govs reliever Greg Leban (1-1) was tagged for the loss after allowing five runs on four hits and four walks in 1.1 innings.
Maxson ended the day 2-for-5 with three RBI while Harker added a 2-for-2, four RBI outing that included three walks to pace the Kansas State offense. Wildcats reliever Hudson Treu (1-0) notched the win with two innings of work, allowing two runs on three hits.
