MURRAY, Ky. -
The Murray State soccer team got off to an impressive start to a two-game weekend after defeating IUPUI 3-0 on Friday at Cutchin Field in Murray, Kentucky.

Murray State (3-0) took a 1-0 advantage over the Jaguars 17 minutes into the opening period following a goal from Miyah Watford off an assist by Reagan Pittenger. Watford proved to have the hot boot for the Racers, as she found the back of the net again in the 30th minute after Abby Jones’ pass found her on the score.

MSU headed into the locker room at the half with a 2-0 lead after taking a total of 18 shots in the first half, while IUPUI recorded four shots during the period.

Coming out of the half, the Racers showed no signs of letting up offensively as a shifty Rebecca Kubin weaved her way through traffic to offer Abby Jones a touch pass that lead to a score just five minutes into the period. The goal from Jones was Murray State’s third goal and the final score of the contest.

MSU’s offense managed to record 29 total shots, with 14 of those being on net. The Racers’ defense was also had a dominant performance, holding IUPUI’s offense to just 8 shots for the match. Goalkeeper Alex Steigerwald had four saves and earned her second shutout on the season.

Following Sunday’s match at Ole Miss, MSU will travel back to Murray for their final match in the month of August against FAU. The Racers will then it the road for a five-game stretch, as they take on Chattanooga (Sept. 7), Southeast Missouri (Sept. 13), and Georgia (Sept. 16) before rounding out the extended road trip in Illinois to take on conference foes Eastern Illinois (Sept. 21) and SIUE (Sept. 23).

In all, Crawford, Kaldaridou, McGivern and Kamryn Chappell recorded a full 90-minute outing for the Skyhawks. The UT Martin back line was unfazed by the opening goal as it allowed just seven shots for the match and locked down in the second half by allowing just two Marshall shots.

AUSTIN PEAY 4, ALABAMA A&M 0
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -
Austin Peay State University women's soccer team enjoyed a dominating performance, defeating Alabama A&M, 4-0, Friday, at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field.

The Govs were the more attacking side of the two to start the match with Morgan Drawdy hitting the post inside eight minutes. However, Alabama A&M dropped eight or nine players behind the ball and it started to frustrate the Govs. Amber Bateman, earning her first start of the season, had a huge chance around midway through the half but headed wide of the goal.

The Govs finally found the breakthrough as a result of Claire Larose's hard running. Larose ran about 50 yards and got around a defender before she was pulled back in the box, earning a penalty kick. Drawdy stepped up and converted the penalty in the 25th minute to give the Govs a 1-0 lead. Alabama A&M had a huge chance to equalize, but hit it over the bar.

Head coach Naomi Kolarova made some great halftime adjustments, as Larose scored less than three minutes into the second half. Larose coolly placed the ball into the right-hand corner of the net to double the lead for APSU.

Larose again got on the scoresheet in the 59th minute, as she stepped in front of her defender to volley home an inch-perfect cross from Katie Kenward.

The Govs had a couple more chances in the next 20 minutes, before freshman Rachel Bradberry scored her first career goal to make it 4-0 for the Govs. Drawdy fed a ball between the center backs of the Bulldogs to release Bradberry, who slotted past the keeper to wrap up the scoring.

Mary Parker Powell, who earned the win, combined with Peyton Powell for the shutout, as the Govs have still not allowed a goal this season.

The Govs have the week off before going on the road to take on Little Rock, next Friday.
