WESTERN CAROLINA 1, BELMONT 0
CULLOWHEE, N.C. -
The Belmont women's soccer team put together its best defensive game of the season Sunday at Western Carolina, but a lone goal allowed just before halftime did the Bruins in during a 1-0 defeat at the Catamount Athletic Complex.

Against Western Carolina (2-1-1 overall record), the Bruins (0-3-0) looked more comfortable and confident in the defensive end and the results followed. Belmont's defense set season bests in goals allowed (1), shots allowed (8) and shots on goal allowed (2), all by significant margins.

Unfortunately that one decent Western Carolina shot yielded the game's only goal. A minute after a WCU goal was waived off due to offsides, the Catamounts connected again just before halftime. A long shot from outside the box by junior forward Cami Couch sailed just over the Belmont goalkeeper's outstretched arm to give the home side a 1-0 lead in the 43rd minute.

Belmont was being outshot 6-2 at halftime, but the Bruins controlled possession after the break and limited the Catamounts to just two shots from then on. Neither of those were on goal.

Goalkeeper Lily Herman (Springboro, Ohio) handled the first half in net, making one save, while Abby Hunt (Surrey, B.C., Canada) came on in relief in a shutout second half.

The Bruins' best scoring opportunity came in the opening half. Sophomore Halle Krebs (Lakewood, Ohio) fired a shot that bypassed the WCU keeper and struck the crossbar. The ball careened back down into the field of play, nearly crossing the goal line, and dangerously bounced around before a Catamount defender could clear the threat.

WCU keeper Natalia Icen made three saves overall, two off the foot of Krebs and one on a shot from sophomore Julie Garst (Franlin, Tenn.).

Belmont now returns to E.S. Rose park to begin a three-game home stand starting next weekend. The Bruins host LIU Brooklyn on Sunday at 12:05 p.m., the first ever meeting between the two programs.

JACKSONVILLE STATE 0, GEORGIA STATE 0
ATLANTA, Ga. -
For the third consecutive year, Jacksonville State and Georgia State played to a scoreless draw on Sunday afternoon at the GSU Soccer Complex.

Going back to the 2015 season, the Gamecocks and Panthers have not tallied a goal between the two sides in 330 minutes. Jax State wraps up its tour of the state of Georgia with an 0-1-1 mark and a 2-1-1 over mark. JSU dropped a tough 1-0 setback to Georgia Southern on Friday night in Statesboto, Georgia. The Panthers moved to 1-2-1 on the season.

The two sides combined for 17 total shots, including one in each of the two 10-minute extra time sessions, along with 14 combined corner kicks. JSU posted seven of the 17 shots, led by two apiece from senior Madison Carruthers, junior Emma Meadows and freshman Ali Thomas. Both of Carruthers' attempts were on goal, while Thomas had one. Junior Adriana Karpa recorded JSU's scoring chance in final moments of the contest. Her shot was saved by GSU's Lydia Fraga, who corralled four saves on the day.

GSU was limited to one on goal opportunity with redshirt freshman goalkeeper Morgan Lerch collecting the save. The shutout was Lerch's second of the season after registering her first of the season last Sunday at Jackson State. GSU's Rebecca Crouch finished with a match-high three shots.

JSU begins a three-match homestand on Friday, August 31 against in-state rival North Alabama. Match time is set for 7 p.m. Even though the two schools have been rivals during the NCAA Division II era of JSU Athletics, the two programs have never met on the pitch. The Lions are in their first year of NCAA Division I Athletics. UNA will enter the match with a 3-0 after wins over Alabama State, Alabama A&M and Jackson State.

BALL STATE 1, MOREHEAD STATE 0
MOREHEAD, Ky. -
The Morehead State soccer team fell to Ball State 1-0 in overtime on Sunday afternoon at Jayne Stadium. The loss is the Eagles third-consecutive overtime loss

The Cardinals netted the game-winner in the 93rd minute with a header from Jenna Dombrowski that was set up by a free kick 30 yards above the box. Paula Guerrero sent the ball into the middle of the box to assist Dombrowski goal.

Redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper Eva Helgadottir continued to rack up the saves for the Eagles as she recorded 12 in the match while facing 22 shots. The 12 saves fall just short of Helgadottir's career-best 13 saves she made in a 2-1 overtime win at UT Martin on October 20, 2018.

Offensively, Morehead State took a season-high 11 shots but was unable to get one past Ball State goalkeeper Tristin Stuteville.  Junior midfielder Morgan Treser took a team-best three shots while senior forward Dani Wilson took two shots that were both on target.

The Eagles are now 1-3 overall and will next travel to Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ohio to square off with Ohio State on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. ET.

SAINT LOUIS 4, SIUE 0
ST. LOUIS, Mo. -
The SIUE women's soccer team fell to Saint Louis 4-0 Sunday despite an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Jensen Schoch. The Cougars drop to 0-3 on the season while Saint Louis improves to 2-1-1.

In the first half, Saint Louis took 18 shots to two for the Cougars. The score ended 0-0 at the half.

Schoch recorded 10 saves in the first including a penalty kick save in the 27th minute.

The second half is where things started to heat up. Saint Louis began their scoring in the 51st minute with a Hannah Friedrich goal, assisted by Maddie Pokorny.

SIUE's best chance of the day came in the 55th minute when Amanda DiNardo shot far post from around 20 yards out and SLU goalkeeper Olivia Silverman had to make an acrobatic save to keep the shot out.

In the 64th minute, Saint Louis created a deep attack and Schoch went in for the ball and ended up tripping the SLU attacker in the box, resulting in a red card. SIUE freshman defender Tami Cash was subbed into the goalkeeper position to contest the penalty kick. Courtney Reimer ended up converting the PK for the Billikens, making the score 2-0.

Saint Louis scored their third goal of the day when Megan Crevoiserat put in a nice through ball to Olivia Petit, and Petit fired a shot from the top the box chipping Cash in net.

The Billikens final goal came in the 88th minute when Haley Cox converted another penalty kick.

DiNardo shot twice for the Cougars, both being on goal. Courtney Benning, Kayla Klipsch and Andrea Frerker all had one shot each for SIUE.

Schoch ended the game with 12 saves, only allowing one goal. Cash recorded one save in 25 minutes in net for SIUE.

The Cougars will be back in action Friday when they travel to face Chicago State at 1 p.m

EASTERN KENTUCKY 3, IUPUI 1
RICHMOND, Ky. -
The Eastern Kentucky University soccer team stayed hot on Sunday afternoon, rolling past visiting IUPUI, 3-1, for its third consecutive victory.

Like in the win over Ball State on Friday, redshirt freshman Sarah Owusu provided the Colonels with an early spark. In the sixth minute, she took a pass from junior Erin Torrence and finished with her left foot in the upper left corner of the net, making it 1-0 Colonels.

Senior Bailly Bounds added to Eastern’s lead in the 57th minute, scoring her first goal of the season to make it 2-0. Torrence was also credited with an assist on that score.

IUPUI (1-2) responded with a goal of its own less than a minute later; however, Owusu fired back with a much-needed insurance score in the 61st minute, giving EKU some breathing room with a 3-1 advantage. Senior Idalys Rea earned her second assist of the season on Owusu’s second goal of the day.

“Today wasn’t our best game, but we’re proud of the girls for getting through this stretch of games,” head coach Nick Flohre said. “Playing three games in six days isn’t easy, and coming out of it with three wins is something we’re very happy about.”

EKU dominated the game statistically, outshooting IUPUI, 17-8, and attempting eight corner kicks to the Jaguars’ one. Bounds led all players in the game with four shots, three of which were on frame. Torrence fired three shots.

Senior Kacy Eckley and sophomore Katie Shaffer played all 90 minutes on the backline, spearheading another strong Colonel defensive effort.

Freshman goalkeeper Zoe Aguirre played all 90 minutes in goal and made two saves in the victory.

Owusu became the 10th Colonel ever to score two goals in a game on Sunday, while Torrence became the ninth Colonel to record a pair of assists in a single game.

EKU returns to action on Friday, August 31, when the Colonels travel to Huntington, West Virginia to take on Marshall at 7 p.m.

UT MARTIN 10, JACKSON STATE 0
MARTIN, Tenn. -
The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer program shattered its high in scoring as the Skyhawks tallied 10 goals today. UT Martin was led by Jaden Hildreth’s hat trick and a host of other Skyhawk strikers.

UT Martin (2-1) saw Hildreth place three shots into the back of the net. Hildreth becomes the fourth Skyhawk to record a hat trick and the first since Abi Sanvee on Oct. 28, 2012 against Tennessee Tech. Blare Gerido picked up a pair of goals while Samantha Kelly, Danae Kaldaridou, Alice Adams and Nicole Collins all tallied a goal each. Bella Roberts led the squad in assists as she racked up two in the contest while Katelyn Colvin, Hendrikje Baurmann and Adams rounded out the assist column.

Makenzie Crawford drew the starting nod and picked up the victory as she played the
first 69:40 of the match before Callie Thomas finished out the match.

Miah Olaleye and Jacalyn Schubring were the two lone Skyhawks to play the match in its entirety as both provided valuable time on the back line.

The Skyhawks got on the scoreboard at the five-minute mark and never looked back as Kelly opened the scoring barrage on a hot pass from Colvin to connect for a goal at point blank range. Gerido then took a pass from Baurmann to head in her first goal of the day. Hildreth got started in the 29th minute as she took a lob off of a head pass from Roberts to bet the keeper in a one-on-one scenario before Roberts connected for a goal of her own on an unassisted run. The Hildreth-Roberts combo came into effect at the 40:53 mark as Roberts issued a hot pass to Hildreth who hammered the ball into the net for her second goal of the matchup.

UT Martin came out of the halftime with a goal just over two minutes into the second period as Gerido tallied her second of the day. Kaldaridou was then awarded a penalty kick and made the most of her opportunity to find the back of the net. At the 72:52 mark, Hildreth racked up the coveted hat trick as she netted her third goal of the matchup. The ninth Skyhawk goal came in an odd fashion as the Jackson State goalkeeper attempted to clear the ball but hit Adams who forced the ball into the net. Collins found the last goal for UT Martin in the 81st minute as she took a pass from Adams to connect for the final Skyhawk goal.

UT Martin returns to action on Wednesday, Aug. 29 as it welcomes Evansville to Skyhawk Field. First touch is slated for 6:30 p.m.

GREEN BAY 3, EASTERN ILLINOIS 2
GREEN BAY, Wis. -
Green Bay scored three goals in a seven minute span in the second half that not only beat the Eastern Illinois women’s soccer team, 3-2,  but also beat the weather as the match was shortened in the 83rd minute due to severe lightning storms in the area.

EIU fell to 0-2-1 on the season and will host IUPUI next Friday at 1 p.m. at Lakeside Field.  Green Bay improved to 1-3 on the year.

The Panthers had positives to start the match as senior Kate Olson scored the first goal of the year for EIU in the 15th minute as she centered a shot in the goal box that took a bounce over Green Bay goalkeeper Taylor Reichow’s head.   EIU’s offense had been shut out this season in both regular season contests and both exhibition matches.

After leading 1-0 at the break, EIU took a 2-0 lead early in the second half as Sarah DeWolf pushed through the Phoenix defense and beat the Reichow to the left.  Pilar Barrio and Haylee Renick were credited with the assists.

Green Bay gained some life in the 71st minute as they converted a penalty kick to cut the Panthers lead in half.  Brianna Messner knocked home the penalty kick.   The score became knotted at 2-2 three minutes later on an own goal by EIU.

McKayla Kertscher would then score what proved to be the game winner four minutes later in the 78th minute on a free kick from just outside the box.

Green Bay held a 16-6 shot advantage including eight total shots on goal.   Freshman Daniela Bermeo had the start in goal for EIU and finished with five saves.

EIU had four shots on goal with three by DeWolf and one by Olson.

OLE MISS 3, MURRAY STATE 0
OXFORD, Miss. -
Murray State (3-1) dropped their first game to Ole Miss of the season in a hard-fought match at Ole Miss Soccer Stadium in Oxford, Mississippi.

The Racers started the match with a strong offensive showing early. Miyah Watford looked to have an excellent scoring chance just nine minutes into the match after she sprinted past an Ole Miss defender looked to attack goalkeeper Marnie Merritt for a one-on-one scoring opportunity. Unfortunately, Watford led herself a little too deep, as the ball rolled into the box, and allowed Merritt to break up the play before the junior could attempt a shot.

Another prime scoring opportunity for the Racers came in the 10th minute after a shifty Rebecca Kubin broke free from the Ole Miss defense for a chance to place the ball past Merritt. Despite her efforts, Kubin's shot missed as the ball soared wide left.

Murray State conceded their first goal of the contest at 25:45 when the Cece Kizer found freshman Haley Stackpole for the score. Ole Miss took the 1-0 lead into the halftime intermission. The Racers managed to record six shots with one shot on goal, compared to 16 shots with five on net for the Rebels.

After the half, Ole Miss forward Channing Foster managed to get another point on the board for the Rebels after sneaking the ball in the far-right corner past a diving Alex Steigerwald at the 52:22 mark. The Rebels got back on the board for the third and final time in the 67th minute, as Cece Kizer weaved in and out through the defensive line and chipped the ball in the net for the last score of the contest.

Murray State recorded 11 total shots on the day, with five on net. Ole Miss finished with 30 and 10 shots on goal.

Murray State returns to action Friday to take on FAU at Cutchin Field in Murray, Kentucky for their final match of August. Following Friday's contest, the Racers will be back on the road for five consecutive games, as they head to Chattanooga (Sept. 7), SEMO (Sept. 13), and Georgia (Sept. 16). MSU will round out their travel in Illinois to take on conference foes Eastern Illinois (Sept. 21) and SIUE (Sept 23).

NORTH ALABAMA 4, TENNESSEE TECH 0
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -
North Alabama spoiled the Tennessee Tech soccer team's bid at a perfect home stand as the Lions scored twice in each half en route to a 4-0 victory Sunday evening. The Golden Eagles were shutout for the first time this season after a scoring a combined four goals over the first three matches of the year.

The loss marks the first defeat at home for Tech since Sept. 4, 2016, a string of 15 straight matches in Cookeville without a loss.

The Golden Eagles (2-2-0) did manage to set a new season high with 12 shots, the second-consecutive match with double-digit shots after registering 10 attempts in Friday's 2-1 win over ETSU. Cassidy Bereda, Rachel Blow, Viviana Lomeli and Tina Marolt all recorded two shots to pace the TTU attack. North Alabama tallied 14 shots, eight of which were on-goal.

Kylie Huey paved the way for UNA behind a five-point showing that included a pair of goals and an assist, while the 5-foot-8 senior forward also led all players in the match with nine shots and five shots on-goal.

Huey unwrapped the scoring for the Lions (4-0-0) with a goal in the 17th minute that saw the Arlington, Tenn. native stall on her first two tries thanks to a pair of impressive, point blank Kari Naerdemann saves, but after gathering a second-straight rebound Huey found a way to split the pipes. Tay Cavett carded an assist on the goal after feeding Huey.

Cavett would do the honors in UNA's second goal, finding the back of the net in the 28th minute courtesy of a shot from the top right of the box. Huey was credited with an assist on Cavett's strike that padded the Lion lead.

In the 51st minute Huey was at it again, scoring off of a rebound after a Shelby Wall shot on-goal was initially deflected away by Naredemann. Wall, who earned an assist on the play, would go on to cap the UNA scoring with a goal in the 72nd minute after receiving a pass from Margarida Sousa, who was credited with an assist on the final Lion goal.

Kari Naerdemann made four saves in the match in nearly 72 minutes of action. Red-shirt sophomore Isabelle Austin came in for the final 18 minutes and change, her first regular-season action in her TTU career. UNA's Shelby Thornton secured the shutout with four saves in the contest.

The Golden Eagles will head back on the road for a pair of weekend contests up north. Tech will be at Evansville Friday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. CT before traveling to Purdue Fort Wayne for a noon first kick on Sunday.
