MURRAY STATE 3, FAU 2
MURRAY, Ky. - The Murray State soccer team earned a 3-2 win over Florida Atlantic Friday at Cutchin Field after weather played a significant factor in Friday's contest as lightning accounted for three delays on the day.
Following the win, the Racers improve to 4-1 and remain perfect on home turf with a 4-0 record at Cutchin Field on the season. Murray State is now 35-5-1 at Cutchin Field since 2014.
The Racers got off to an early lead, as Miyah Watford put the Racers on the scoreboard in just the 1st minute of action. The goal came when a crowded Watford sent the shot inside the box before the ball sailed off an FAU defender into the net for her fifth score of the season.
Murray State took a 2-0 advantage at the 40-minute mark when Kayla Travis found sophomore Allyson McAtamney who drove her shot past FAU goalkeeper Jennifer Ocampo and into the right corner of goal. With the score, McAtamney recorded the first goal of her MSU career.
At the half, MSU headed to the locker room with a two-point lead after logging 12 shots while Florida Atlantic attempted five shots.
The Owls were rejuvenated after the half as they were awarded a penalty kick after a Murray State handball. Ebba Blomqvist converted the penalty try and putting the Owls on the board for a 2-1 deficit.
After a series of lightning delays forced the squads into their respective locker rooms for more than 40 minutes, a Racer own goal after an aggressive offensive push by the Owls tied the game at two-all. Shortly after that, the third and final lightning strike held off the contest for an additional 30-minute intermission.
With each squad well rested and the match tied at two, the will to win was evident. Each team battled back and forth until the final seconds of the contest. With less than 10 seconds remaining on the clock, Miyah Watford hurried up the field and set the stage for an open Rebecca Kubin. As the clock winded down, Kubin weaved through the FAU defenders and sent a shot past a diving Ocampo into the goal with one second remaining in the contest to put the Racers ahead 3-2.
After competing for the first time, Murray State breaks the clean slate and takes a 1-0 advantage All-Time over Florida Atlantic.
Rebecca Kubin and Allyson McAtamney each scored their first goals of the season this match, while Miyah Watford contributed with her fifth goal on the year.
The Racers return to action next week to kick off their five-game road stint at Chattanooga (Sept. 7) followed by their first conference match on the season at Southeast Missouri (Sept. 13). Murray State then heads to Georgia (Sept. 16) before rounding out the extended road trip in Illinois for two conference games against Eastern Illinois (Sept. 21) and SIUE (Sept. 23).
