TENNESSEE TECH 4, PURDUE FORT WAYNE 0
FORT WAYNE, Ind. –
Behind a history-making performance by sophomore Kendall Powell, the Tennessee Tech soccer team finished its road trip up north in prime fashion with a 4-0 win at Purdue Fort Wayne Sunday afternoon.

Powell scored three times to lead the Golden Eagle offensive surge, becoming only the fourth player in program history to record a hat trick and first since Jen Hoffman accomplished the feat back on November 5, 2009. Overall it is just the seventh occurrence in school history. TTU Hall of Famer Jill Burns recorded four hat tricks in her career and Tania Desmarais was the first Golden Eagle to score three goals in a match with her hat trick on October 6, 2001.

Senior Courtney Manning accounted for the other Tech score with a penalty-kick goal in the 85th minute as the Golden Eagles (3-3-0) put four on the board in a match for the first time since a 4-1 victory at UNC Asheville on August 28, 2011.

Powell jump started the Tech offense with her first net-finder in the 22nd minute, the lone goal scored in the first half. After navigating through heavy traffic, the Cookeville native found herself one-on-one with Mastodon keeper Haley Lydon before eventually splitting the pipes to give the Golden Eagles the early edge.

Powell's second goal came in the 53rd minute and was courtesy of a Chloe Smith pass on the outside that saw Powell use her left foot to sneak a strike inside the near post. Smith registered her second assist of the season on the goal that put Tech ahead 2-0.

Viviana Lomeli assisted on Powell's third goal in the 59th minute with a bicycle kick from outside the box that ultimately connected with Powell who took care of the rest to push the TTU edge to 3-0.

Courtney Manning put the finishing touches on the Golden Eagle offensive outburst with her second career goal on a penalty kick in the tilt's waning moments.

Overall Tech set season-highs in both shots with 14 and shots on-goal with nine. Powell's five shots bested all players in the match and her three goals give the dynamic sophomore four this season. Hannah Kroger paced the Mastodons (1-4-1) with four of the club's seven shots.

Kari Naerdemann collected two saves in between the pipes for her second shutout this year and 30th in her career to extend an already Ohio Valley Conference record. Purdue Fort Wayne used a pair of goal keepers as Haley Lydon allowed one goal and made one save in the first half, while Lorah Pund surrendered three goals and recorded three stops in the second half.

The Golden Eagles will return home for the squad's final two non-conference matches of the season. TTU will host Troy on Friday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. CT before welcoming in the University of Tennessee to Tech Soccer Field Sunday, Sept. 9 at 6 p.m. Admission to both matches is free of charge.

The Cougars drop to 1-4 overall. The Fighting Illini (4-2) also have wins over #3 Duke and #14 Oklahoma State this season.

Illinois got off to a quick start, scoring within the first minute of play with a goal from Makena Silber. Kelly Maday was credited with the assist for Illinois.

In the 19th minute, Katie Murray scored her third goal of the season for the Fighting Illini with a rebound off the post from her own shot.

Illinois outshot SIUE 12-4 during full time,

MISSISSIPPI STATE 4, AUSTIN PEAY 0
STARKVILLE, Miss. -
Austin Peay State University women's soccer team could not overcome Mississippi State, succumbing 4-0, Sunday, at the MSU Soccer Field.

The Govs (3-2) were attempting to beat a Southeastern Conference opponent for the first time in program history, but the Bulldogs (6-0) got off to a flying start.

Zakirah McGillivary picked up the ball on the right side and cut it on her left foot and fired past Mary Parker Powell from just outside the box to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the 8th minute.

The Bulldogs continued to pile on the pressure, but the Govs stayed resilient over the next 15 minutes. Jennifer Smith had the first shot for the Govs, having a strike from about 25 yards out that barely went over the goal.

Just as the Govs started to grow into the game, McGillivary was sent through 1v1 and finished coolly into the corner to double the lead for Mississippi State.

Things got worse for the Govs as the Bulldogs counter-attacked after a couple shots were blocked for the Govs and Gabriella Coleman made it 3-0 shortly before halftime.

Austin Peay played better attacking-wise in the second half, as they had to press to try and get back into the game. Brice Bement had the first shot of the half in less than three minutes, but it went high. Claire Larose also forced a save out of the Bulldog goalkeeper.

The game slowed a little before MaKayla Waldner wrapped up the scoring with a goal from short-range in the 71st minute. There were no real scoring threats for either side the rest of the match.

The Govs return to action, Friday, with a road match against Mercer.

BELMONT 2, LIU BROOKLYN 1
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
The Belmont women's soccer team proved the need for strong reserves and even stronger nerves Sunday at E.S. Rose Park. Trailing LIU Brooklyn with hardly three minutes remaining in regulation, senior Allie Svoboda sent the game to overtime where teammate Megan Michela provided the game-winning goal in the 107th minute of a 2-1 victory.

Both players started the game on the bench for Belmont (1-3-0), which picked up its first win of the season in dramatic fashion. In all, 23 Bruins saw playing time on a sweltering afternoon in Nashville.

Belmont controlled the ball for most of the game but found itself at a deficit late despite holding a better than three-to-one advantage in shots at the time. The Bruins finally broke through in the 87th minute when Svoboda (Lisle, Ill.) poked a shot past the goalkeeper from the top of the right side of the box to put Belmont on the board.

Svoboda, who missed all of last season due to injury, played an impactful 32 minutes while making her season debut.

The final Bruin shot, the team's 12th on goal for the day, put an end to marathon in the game's second overtime period. Junior defender Shannon Maitland (Belleville, Ill.) served up a cross that cleared a pair of defenders. Michela was in position to fire the shot home through traffic and send the Bruins home winners.

Belmont would have found its first lead of the day far earlier had it not been for LIU Brooklyn's goalkeeping, which made 10 saves, including eight in regulation. Undeterred, the Bruins kept shooting to register a season-high 24 shots.

The Bruins will play two more times at E.S. Rose Park in the upcoming week, hosting UAB on Friday and Valparaiso on Sunday to close out their nonconference slate.

TENNESSEE 2, UT MARTIN 0

Defenders Kaci Mitchell and Kamryn Chappell each logged 90 minutes on the pitch to keep a free-firing Tennessee limited in their shot selections.

Makenzie Crawford and Erica Myers split time in goal as Crawford played the entire first period followed by Myers’ work in the second half. Crawford saw just three shots put up by Tennessee while Myers was welcomed in the second period with a barrage of Volunteer shots as she racked up seven saves in the process.

It is the Colonels’ first-ever win over the Wildcats.

“Today is a proud day for our program,” head coach Nick Flohre said. “We always know playing Kentucky will be difficult, but our players have gained the confidence to compete with anyone. We’re thrilled for the girls to get our program’s first victory over the Wildcats and to continue our push through the season.”

Thompson – a native of Danville, Kentucky – scored on a beautiful play just four minutes in to give EKU (4-2-0) an early advantage. She took a combination of passes from sophomore Alyssa Julien and senior Idalys Rea, and fired it past UK goalkeeper Hannah Leonard to the far post for her first score of the season.
