INDIANA STATE 3, EASTERN ILLINOIS 1
CHARLESTON, Ill. - Heavy rain forced the delay and relocation of Friday afternoon’s women’s soccer match between Eastern Illinois and Indiana State. Following a 20-minute delay, the match was moved to the adjacent EIU Rugby Field where the Sycamores scored two second half goals to beat EIU, 3-1.
The Panthers are now 1-3-2 on the season and will play at Northern Illinois on Sunday at 2 p.m. ISU improved to 4-2-2 on the year.
Itxaso Aguero gave the Panthers the early lead as she scored with a redirected shot on a pass from Sarah DeWolf in the 20th minute of the match. It was the first career goal for the sophomore from Spain.
Indiana State scored the equalizer just before the end of the first half as Katie Wells crossed a pass at the top of the box that Katie Sidloski finished off for the Sycamores first goal in the 38th minute.
Wells and Sidloski would duplicate the same play in the second half as Sidloski scored what proved to be the game winner in the 48th minute on an assist from Wells.
ISU had a chance to add a third goal a few minutes later but EIU goalkeeper Sara Teteak made a save on a penalty kick by Danielle Varner.
The Sycamores would get that insurance goal in the 69th minute with Wells finishing off a pass from Kathryn Besserman for the goal.
EIU had five total shots in the match with three shots on goal. Two came from Aguero with DeWolf adding the other. Angela Corcoran and Kate Olson added shots for EIU.
Indiana State had seven total shots with four shots on goal.
GARDNER WEBB 2, EASTERN KENTUCKY 1
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Eastern Kentucky University soccer team dropped a road match at Gardner-Webb, 2-1, on Friday evening at Greene-Harbison Stadium.
Like in Sunday’s win over Kentucky, Kylie Thompson got the Colonels off to a quick start. The sophomore from Danville scored her second goal in as many games in the eighth minute, giving EKU (4-3-0) an early 1-0 lead.
Gardner-Webb (3-3-1) leveled in the 20th minute when Stina Kleppe converted a penalty kick to make it 1-1.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs got the game-winner in the 52nd minute when Jada Newton fired one off the crossbar and in.
Both teams recorded 16 shots on the night. Thompson and juniors Erin Torrence and Marian Wolski led the Colonels with three shots apiece.
EKU attempted 11 corner kicks to GWU’s five.
Kacy Eckley and Katie Shaffer went the distance on EKU’s backline, while freshman goalkeeper Zoe Aguirre made five saves in the loss.
EKU returns to action on Sunday night when the Colonels travel to face No. 24 Louisville.
AUSTIN PEAY 1, MERCER 0
MACON, Ga. - Austin Peay State University women's soccer team rebounded from two straight losses to defeat Mercer, 1-0, Friday, at Betts Stadium.
The 1-0 scoreline was very misleading as the two teams combined for 34 shots, the most involving the Govs (4-2) this season.
The Govs enjoyed some early success, as Caroline Wistrom and Renee Semaan each had shots in the game's opening ten minutes.
The Bears (3-3-1) eventually gained more control of the match and had the better share of opportunities for the next 20 minutes, but Mary Parker Powell made a couple of saves to thwart Mercer. The Govs had a flurry of shots in the last few minutes of the half, with Wistrom and Rachel Bradberry having shots saved and Gybson Roth having a goal-bound shot blocked.
Mercer had the first attempt of the second half, but Powell was up to the task again, making another save, as she finished with a season-high seven.
Powell made two more saves before the hour mark as it looked like the Bears were going to press for the opening goal, but McKenzie Dixon had something to say about that. Dixon found the net in the 63rd minute off an assist from Jade Dauriat, a goal that proved to be the winner.
The Govs almost grabbed a second just a couple minutes later, with Claire Larose having a shot blocked from another Dauriat delivery.
With about ten minutes left, Mercer really started to press for an equalizer, but the Govs kept holding strong defensively. The Bears had seven shots over the final ten minutes, with four of them either blocked by a Gov defender or saved by Powell. Junior defender Meghan Dees came up huge for the Govs as she cleared two shots off the line. After a yellow card on Mercer, the Govs were able to run out the clock to earn a huge road victory.
UT MARTIN 2, WESTERN CAROLINA 1
MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team was able to outlast the Western Carolina Catamounts this evening as the Skyhawks claimed a 2-1 victory.
UT Martin (4-2) was led by the duo of Skylor Keane and Bella Roberts and they both found the back of the net in the exciting match. Samantha Kelly and Danae Kaldaridou were responsible for assists as both issued nifty passes. Keane and Roberts also paced the club in shots while Keane’s three on goal led the team in the category. Also tallying shots on the evening were Kelly, Kaldaridou, Sara Ketis, Kaci Mitchell, Amy McGivern, Nicole Collins and Blare Gerido.
Erica Myers stood tall between the posts as the Holland, Ohio native allowed just one goal but saved a pair of would-be scores in her complete match.
Along with Myers, the back line tandem of Kamryn Chappell and Jacalyn Schubring logged the full 90 minutes on the pitch.
It would take nearly 65 minutes for the first goal of the bout to find the back of the net when Keane took a quick pass from Kaldaridou to reel off a shot and put the Skyhawks up 1-0. Western Carolina answered just a little over two minutes later with a goal of its own. Roberts sent the game-winner between the posts at the 80:12 mark as she received a hot pass from Kelly for a one-touch goal.
UT Martin returns to action tomorrow as it hosts regional opponent Union. First touch is slated for 7 p.m.
SAMFORD 2, JACKSONVILLE STATE 1
JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - Samford broke a 1-1 double overtime deadlock in the 108th minute with the game-winning goal and a 2-1 decision over Jacksonville State on Friday night at the JSU Soccer Field.
The Gamecocks wrapped up a three-match homestand against in-state foes after falling to North Alabama a week ago and posted a scoreless draw last Tuesday against Troy. JSU dropped to 2-3-2 overall and will wrap up the non-conference slate on Sunday in Macon, Georgia against the Bears of Mercer. Match time is set for 12 p.m. CST.
Korie Sanders delivered both goals for the visiting Bulldogs as she equalized with her first connection in the 72nd minute and collected the game winner with just under two minutes left in the contest.
The Gamecocks struck first with a goal by senior Madison Carruthers in the 51st minute. The scoring play was set up my sophomore Lindsay Albani and redshirt freshman Abigail Martinez. Martinez was making her second consecutive start after being inserted in to the line up against Troy. Albani was also credited with a shot in the match. Carruthers netted her first of the season and the first of her career in the Red and White. The Frankford, Ontario, Canada native led JSU with three total shots.
SU controlled the tempo throughout the game with a 23-6 advantage in total shots, including a balanced attack with eight in the first 45 minutes and nine in the second half. The Bulldogs added three shots in each of the two extra sessions. Senior Claire Petersen, junior Naida Plawiuk registered shots in the loss.
BELMONT 1, UAB 1
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Not fazed by an hour-long lightning delay, the Belmont women's soccer team dominated possession against UAB. Ultimately it was just time that ran out in a 1-1 draw at E.S. Rose Park.
The game was tied at 1-all when the threat of rain turned into a downpour in the 61st minute. Lightning and thunder cleared the field for 1 hour, 23 minutes before play could resume.
The teams played through to the end of regulation and then one 10-minute overtime period before time constraints cut the game short there.
Belmont's Niki Clements scored her first goal of the season in the 17th minute to knot the score in what proved to be the final goal of the evening. Belmont held a 25-8 edge on shots overall.
KENT STATE 3, MOREHEAD STATE 2
KENT, Ohio - The Morehead State soccer team erased a 2-0 halftime deficit but ultimately fell 3-2 to Kent State on Friday evening at Dix Stadium.
After conceding two goals to the Golden Flashes in the first 45 minutes of play, senior forward Dani Wilson found the back of the net in the 57th and 64th minutes to pull the game back to even at 2-2. Both of Wilson's goals were assisted by senior Samantha Damante.
For Wilson, it was her first time scoring twice in a game since picking up two goals as a freshman to help propel Morehead State to a 2-1 win in overtime against Bowling Green on August 28, 2015.
Kent State went on to net the go-ahead goal in the 81st minute and held on for the final eight minutes to seal the win.
Despite being outshot by the Golden Flashes 21-7, the Eagles were able to score a goal for the first time since an 82nd-minute header goal by redshirt-sophomore midfielder Katie Quinn that forced overtime in an eventual 2-1 loss to Kentucky on August 23.
Morehead State is now 1-6 and will next faceoff with Duquesne at Rooney Field in Pittsburgh on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET.
MURRAY STATE 2, CHATTANOOGA 2
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Murray State soccer team kicked off their five-game road trip with a double overtime draw against the Chattanooga Mocs on Friday at Finley Stadium in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Miyah Watford got the Racers' offense in motion after sending an impressive shot into the upper left post and leaving no room for Chattanooga's goalkeeper to make a play. Watford's score, her sixth of the season, gave Murray State a 1-0 advantage in the ninth minute.
MSU did not maintain the lead too long, as UTC's Catherine Meyer controlled a pass from Macey Fox in the box, and sent the ball past a diving Alex Steigerwald for the score in the 34th minute. After the score, both squads headed into the locker room tied at one.
The Mocs quickly gained the upper hand coming out of halftime intermission when they scored their second goal after Maggie Shaw zipped a shot past MSU's defenders to give UTC a 2-1 lead.
Chattanooga maintained the 2-1 lead until the 84:54 mark when Abby Jones launched a corner kick into the box for the Racers and found Cori Cain for the header to tie the game two-all. Cain's goal was her first on the season and helped the Racers send the match into overtime.
While Murray State and Chattanooga continued to push for a scoring opportunity, neither squad could manage to find the back of the net during the first overtime, resulting in a 10-minute double overtime period. Both teams continued to battle on both sides of the field but ended the contest in a 2-2 draw.
The Racers finished with 21 shots during the contest with 11 being on the net, while UTC recorded 17 shots of their own and 12 on goal. Senior goalkeeper Alex Steigerwald earned ten saves on the day.
Following the draw, the Racers are now 4-1-1 on the season heading into their first match of conference play next weekend against Southeast Missouri (Sept. 13). MSU then plays Georgia (Sept. 16) before heading to Illinois to complete their five-game road stretch in OVC action against Eastern Illinois (Sept. 21) and SIUE (Sept. 23). Murray State will finally return home to take on Tennessee Tech (Sept. 28) and Jacksonville State (Sept. 30) at Cutchin Field to round out September.
