EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - SIUE women's soccer will appear in the semifinals of the Ohio Valley Conference tournament for the first time since 2016, after advancing past Eastern Illinois, 1-0 Sunday at Korte Stadium.
SIUE is now 9-5-4 overall. Eastern Illinois finishes its season at 4-10-4.
The lone goal on the afternoon came at minute 26. Becca Jostes set up the offensive attack off a Cougar's corner kick, which resulted in an own goal from Eastern Illinois.
Despite only one goal being scored, the Cougars outshot the Panthers 22-11, with 13 of those being on goal.
SIUE goalkeeper Jensen Schoch finished with six saves including several diving stops to keep the game scoreless. This is Schoch's fourth shutout in a row.
Pilar Barrio had two of the shots on goal for EIU with Eva Munoz, Lexi Ketterhagen, Itxaso Aguero and Sarah DeWolf picking up the others.
SIUE will face top-seeded Southeast Missouri State in the semifinals Friday at 6:30 p.m. The last meeting between the Cougars and Redhawks, resulted in a Redhawks double overtime win, 2-1
BELMONT 3, UT MARTIN 2
MARTIN, Tenn. - Sixth-seeded Belmont defeated no. 3 UT Martin, 3-2, to advance to the semifinals of the 2019 OVC Soccer Championship. The Bruins will face No. 2 Murray State on Friday at 3 p.m. CT
UT Martin scored early as Bella Roberts found the back of the net off an assist from Jill Hildreth in the match’s sixth minute. Belmont would answer back in the 13th minute as Julie Garst recovered a deflection to tie the match.
The game would remain knotted up until the 71st minute as the Bruins found a goal by Avery Nowak to take their first lead of the contest. UT Martin would fight back, finding the equalizer as Roberts scored her second goal of the game with a header off a perfect cross from Alice Adams to knot the game.
With both teams remaining aggressive, Belmont nailed a shot off the crossbar before Garst rebounded the attempt and pushed her second goal past the diving keeper for the ultimate game-winning goal with nine minutes to play.
