TENNESSEE STATE 66, FORDHAM 61
BRONX, N.Y. - In it’s first true road win of the season, the Tennessee State men’s basketball team defeated the Fordham Rams, 66-61 in the historic Rose Hill Gymnasium Sunday afternoon.
Wesley Harris carried the offensive effort for TSU in the first half, scoring 15 points, helping Big Blue enter the break with a 13-point lead over the Rams. Jon Brown stepped on the court for the second period ready to dominate as the junior put up 13 points - marking his best shooting night of the season, finishing the night with a career-high 17 points.
Defensively, the Tigers shut Fordham down, grabbing 27 defensive rebounds - two less than FU's total rebounds, and registered two blocks and two steals over the course of the afternoon.
Tennessee State's bench contributed over half of Big Blue's 66 points, putting up 35 thanks to Brown and Bronx, New York, native Emmanuel Egbuta who added 10 points.
NORTHWESTERN 72, SIUE 54
EVANSTON, Ill. - Three SIUE players scored in double figures Sunday, but it came in a losing effort as Northwestern topped the Cougars 72-54 at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
The Cougars suffered their sixth consecutive loss and dropped to 2-8. Northwestern improved to 5-4.
SIUE never led in the game, but scored the last four points in the first half to head into halftime down 31-26.
The Wildcats got off to an 8-2 start to the second half to push the advantage to double digits. The Cougars ran off eight straight points, capped off by three-pointers from Zeke Moore and Kenyon Duling to cut the deficit to 47-39 with 12:13 to play. Northwestern extended the lead thanks to a 7-0 run of its own.
Moore led SIUE with 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Tyresse Williford scored 12 points punctuated by a 5-for-6 day at the free throw line. Brandon Jackson added 10 points.
Ryan Young scored a career-best 25 points and added 12 rebounds to lead Northwestern.
YOUNGSTOWN STATE 65, SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 50
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Darrious Agnew dropped in a season-high 17 points and Isaiah Gable added 10 as Southeast Missouri (3-7) fell to Horizon League member Youngstown State (6-5), 65-50, Sunday night.
SEMO dropped its third-straight game and fifth in its last six contests.
The Redhawks simply couldn't get anything going against YSU which outscored SEMO, 38-24, inside the paint.
SEMO led for just 1:26 of the game and pulled ahead by four early on Skyler Hogan's 3-pointer. Tied, 6-6, YSU used a 17-3 run to open a double-digit lead as the Redhawks went 1-of-10 from the field and turned the ball over four times in that stretch. Gable led SEMO with nine points off the bench in the first half, all from 3-point range. Hemade the Redhawks only field goal during the Penguins lengthy run.
YSU later led, 38-24, at the half.
SEMO trailed by as many as 22 points with 14:41 remaining in the second half before falling to its seventh true road loss in a row dating back to last year.
Agnew scored 13 of his points in the second half during his second-straight start for the Redhawks. He was 8-of-14 from the field with six rebounds, two steals and one assist. A native of Greenville, Ohio, Gable finished with six rebounds in addition to his 10 points off the bench in the return to his home state. He made 3-of-4 three-pointers.
SEMO shot just 33.9 percent (20-of-59) from the field to YSU's 51 percent (26-of-51) clip. The Redhawks 50 points marked their fewest in a game this season.
Naz Bohannon led YSU with 14 points and nine rebounds.
