MOREHEAD STATE 16-11, OAKLAND 3-0
MOREHEAD, Ky.
- An offensive onslaught, including innings with seven and eight-run productions - plus lock-down pitching from the entire staff - propelled Morehead State baseball to a doubleheader sweep (16-3 and 11-0) over Oakland at Allen Field Friday.

Senior catcher Hunter Fain homered twice in the opener for the Eagles (5-1), while junior Ryan Layne drove in five runs. In the nightcap, four pitchers combined for a six-hit shutout with just one walk. The Eagles scored in all but one inning in the first contest and erupted for an eight-spot on the scoreboard in the seventh. In the second game, MSU led 4-0 after two before not scoring again until the eighth inning. In that frame, though, the Eagles exploded for seven runs, all on either RBI singles, wild pitches or bases-loaded walks.

In the opener, MSU scored solo runs in the first frame innings, plated two in the fifth and sixth and scored the aforementioned eight in the seventh. Meanwhile, junior lefthander Dalton Stambaugh (2-0) struck out six and allowed just four hits through five frames.

Fain, who had seven long balls last year and took the second game off today, upped his total four already in 2019 with a solo shot in the second and a two-run smack to deep left centerfield in the seventh - his only two hits of the game.

Layne got the scoring parade going with a an RBI double in the first, lifted a sac fly in the third, connected on a two-run single in the sixth and made it a five-RBI day with another run scoring single in the seventh.

The Eagles also got two-run doubles from sophomore Bryce Hensor and senior Jake Hammon in the big seventh-inning scoring barrage.

On the mound, junior righty Jake Ziegelmeyer picked up where Stambaugh left off. He fanned four in his two frames of work before junior lefty Grant Crosby and senior righty Josh Baumgart also collected punchouts to give the Eagles 12 strikeouts in the game versus just two walks.

Layne, along with senior Trevor Snyder, had three hits apiece among the home team's 17 hits.

In game two, starter Jason Goe (1-1), on a pre-determined pitch count, picked up the win with three innings of scoreless work. Three other hurlers combined to go the rest of the way and preserve the shutout.

Freshman Landon Weins, who has yet to surrender a run now in 7.2 innings of work, tossed the next four with four with four strikeouts He sat the side in the fourth with all three strikeouts. Senior David Looney recorded a pair of Ks, and junior Blake Preston, who also worked in game one, closed the win down.

Offensively, senior Reid Leonard and Hensor totaled two hits each. MSU had nine hits but took advantage of 11 free passes by Golden Grizzly pitchers and seven wild pitches.

Senior Connor Pauly reached base in both games to extend his reached-base streak to 35 games, while Hammon moved his streak to 28 games despite seeing his hitting streak snapped in game two at 22 games.

EASTERN KENTUCKY 5-16, MARYLAND-EASTERN SHORE 1-1
RICHMOND, Ky.
- Logan Teague and Kaven Brown turned in a pair of stellar pitching performances as the Eastern Kentucky University baseball team swept a doubleheader against the University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Friday at Earle Combs Stadium.

The Colonels (4-2) won by scores of 5-1 and 16-1.

In game one, the Colonels grabbed a 2-0 lead when Nick Howie drove in Ryland Kerr with a double in the third, and Will Johnson scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth.

That was all Teague (1-0) needed.  The senior from Lancaster, Kentucky allowed just one hit and two walks while striking out seven over seven scoreless innings.

Eastern got a couple, two-out, RBI hits from freshmen Michael Brewer and Marcus Hill in the bottom of the eighth for insurance.

Howie finished 2-for-2 with two walks and an RBI.  Johnson was 1-for-2 with three walks, a stolen base, two runs and an RBI.

UMES starter Dwayne Marshall (1-1) allowed one run on four hits in three and one-third innings.  He pitched seven scoreless innings with seven strikeouts in a season-opening win for the Hawks last weekend.

Brown surpassed his previous career-best of eight strike outs with his ninth of the game in the top of the fifth inning.  His previous career-high came last season in a win at No. 11 Vanderbilt.  The senior allowed just one hit and one walk in five innings of work.

Howie went 3-for-4 in game two with an RBI.  In both games combined, he was 5-for-6 with two RBIs.  Conklin was 3-for-4 with a run and three RBIs in the second game.

JACKSONVILLE 2, JACKSONVILLE STATE 1
JACKSONVILLE, Fla.
- The Jacksonville State baseball team dropped a tough 2-1 Friday night decision to Jacksonville in the opening game of a three-game series with the Dolphins.

The Dolphins (1-3) erased a 1-0 deficit in the home half of the ninth inning with both of their runs coming in the final plate appearance.  A pair of back-to-back walks to open the last frame eventually scored the tying and winning run.  JU's Scott Dubrule delivered an RBI single through the left side to even the contest, followed by Angel Camacho's walk off single to left field.  The two runs were issued to sophomore Christian Edwards, who was saddled with the loss.  The one-run setback dropped JSU to 2-3 overall.

JU's walk off overshadowed the pitching performance by redshirt junior Garrett Farmer.  Farmer continued his dominance from a season ago with a seven-inning outing.  Farmer limited the Dolphins a pair of hits – both by Ruben Someillan.  Someillan was the lone Dolphin to have a multi-hit night at the plate.  Farmer faced two over the minimum in his seven innings of work and did not issue a free pass.  The Huntsville, Alabama right hander fanned four in the no decision.

Junior transfer Jackson Tavel set up the ninth inning with a clean eighth inning.

JU starter Tyler Santana was equally impressive with six innings of work and posted 10 strikeouts.  JSU touched him for three hits, including two by junior transfer Alex Webb.  The five other Dolphin pitchers continued to keep limit Jax State at the plate as they combined for just two hits and four strikeouts.

Webb broke a scoreless deadlock in the fourth inning with a leadoff home run to right centerfield.  The Columbia, Tennessee native, who was in the designated hitters spot in the lineup, also had a hit in his next at bat in the sixth.  Webb finished the night 3-for-4 with his third hit of the contest in the eighth.  The Gamecocks stranded six on the base paths, including five in scoring position.

Junior Andrew Naismith and senior Nic Gaddis added hits in the loss.
