MURRAY, Ky. - Murray State defeated Purdue Fort Wayne, 2-0, and Samford, 5-1, to conclude the Racer Classic on Monday.
In the win over Purdue Fort Wayne, the Racers scored both of their runs in the fifth inning. Sierra Gilmore went 1-for-3 and drove in a run while Lindsey Carroll also recorded an RBI. Taylor Makowsky picked up the shutout victory, striking out seven batters.
Against Samford, Gilmore hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the second. It was the first home run of the season for Gilmore. Jensen Streigel also drove in a pair of runs. Hannah James earned the win as she struck out five and gave up just one run in 5.0 innings of work. Amber Van Duyse pitched 2.0 scoreless innings to pick up the save.
Murray Staet will be back in action this weekend at the Memphis Softball Tournament.
HAWAII 5, SIUE 3
HONOLULU – Zoe Schafer provided all three RBIs Monday in SIUE softball's 5-3 loss at Hawaii.
Schafer's bid for a game-tying home run to center field came up just short in the top of the seventh.
The Cougars are now 7-7 and are idle Tuesday before beginning the Rainbow Wahine Classic Wednesday against No. 5-ranked and undefeated Alabama (20-0) at 6 p.m. CT.
SIUE is scheduled to play five games total in the Rainbow Wahine Classic with two games against Alabama, two against Niagara and one more against Hawaii.
Schafer's bat provided the key hits that drove home all three SIUE runs. Her first two RBIs came in the third inning on a single to left field that drove home Alyssa Heren and Jill Niehaus. Heren would score once again in the fifth on Schafer's second hit of the day.
SIUE outhit Hawaii 8-5 with Sydney Bina joining Schafer with two hits.
Isabella Dino was credited with the victory and improved to 6-2 for Hawaii, which never trailed after scoring three runs in the first inning. Emily Ingles took the loss for SIUE after yielding four runs in the first two innings.
Corrina Rivas threw the final four innings for SIUE and gave up just hits.
