DAYTON, Ohio - Behind 29 points from Kevin McClain and 14 rebounds from Dylan Windler, Belmont topped Temple 81-70 on Tuesday in the First Four to secure its first-ever NCAA Tournament victory.
Belmont, who had previously been 0-7 in NCAA Tournament games, advances to play No. 6 seed Maryland on Thursday in Jacksonville (2:10 p.m. CT, TruTV).
It is the first NCAA Tournament win for the OVC since 2012 (Murray State), although OVC teams have now won a game in five of the past 11 tournaments.
OVC Freshman of the Year Nick Muszynski, who missed the OVC Tournament Championship game with an injured ankle, hit 8-of-12 field goal attempts and finished with 16 points while also adding four rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal.
Fellow freshman Adam Kunkel came up big with five points, a block, steal and rebound in 11 minutes of action.
Windler was limited to five points on 2-of-7 shooting, had three steals and two assists in addition to his 14 boards.
Belmont hit 9-of-23 3-pointers.
Temple was led by Shizz Alston, Jr. who had 21 points.
