CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri (32-11, 10-4) hit seven home runs in a doubleheader split with Ohio Valley Conference leader Murray State (21-20, 11-3) Monday afternoon at the Southeast Softball Complex. The Redhawks dropped game one, 8-4, but regrouped to win the nightcap, 9-1, in five innings.
Six different Redhawks hit a home run with Parker Bandy finishing the day with two.
SEMO pounded out 10 hits with four of its home runs in its game two victory. It was the Redhawks ninth win in five or six innings this season.
Ashley Ellis delivered a RBI-single and Kaylee Anderson slugged her first home run of the season, a two-run shot to center, to give the Redhawks a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Two innings later, Claudia Gallo and Ellis each homered to extend SEMO's lead to 6-0. Ellis hit her team-high 12thround-tripper, while Gallo went yard for the eighth time.
Bandy led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run to left field and freshman Chelsy Pena hit a two-out single to right with the bases loaded to bury the Racers for good in the fifth inning.
Freshman Marisa Davis (1-1) picked up her first career win. Davis came out of the bullpen and allowed a hit, one run and struck out two in three innings.
MSU starter Taylor Makowsky (7-3) was roughed up for four runs on four hits in 2.1 innings.
Ellis hit .500 for the doubleheader, going 3-for-6 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBI. Madison Harris and Rachel Anderson joined Gallo, Ellis, Bandy and K. Anderson with home runs. R. Anderson (10), like Ellis, reached double-digit home runs this year. It is the first time in 12 years where SEMO had two players get 10 or more home runs in a season. Michelle Summers (14) and Stacie Dopudja (12) last accomplished the feat in 2007.
Lauren Braundmeier's two-out grand slam in the top of the seventh inning sealed MSU's game one victory.
Tied, 3-3, the Racers took the lead on a two-out RBI-single by Lexi Jones in the sixth.
An error at the beginning of the seventh inning came back to haunt the Redhawks. Two walks and a sacrifice-bunt put Racers at every base before Braundmeier homered to left field.
Hannah James (11-9) claimed the complete game win after striking out eight and walking two in seven innings. James also scattered five hits and allowed four runs.
Haley Thogmartin (14-4), this week's Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week, took her first loss in league play. Thogmartin struck out two, walked three and gave up eight runs on nine hits in seven innings.
MSU outhit SEMO, 9-5, and scored six unearned runs off four Redhawk errors.
