EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Murray State scored early in both games of the doubleheader to defeat SIUE softball at Cougar Field.
The Racers downed the Cougars 5-2 and 8-2 to improve to 26-25 overall and 16-6 in Ohio Valley Conference play.
The Cougars, which conclude the regular season tomorrow, can earn a spot in next week's OVC Tournament in Oxford, Alabama, with a doubleheader sweep Sunday against Austin Peay. Game time is 1 p.m. for the doubleheader. SIUE stands at 15-26 overall and 7-13 in the OVC.
Zoe Schafer was a bright spot offensively for the Cougars with three hits for the day, including her team-leading seventh home run of the season.
The Cougars also picked up a home run in game two from freshman Sammie Ofoia, a sixth-inning solo blast over the left field fence.
Madison Culver led the Racers with four hits on they day, going 4-for-7 with 2 RBI. Denis Teague went 2-for-5 with four RBI over the two games. She hit her first home run of the season in the first game.
Murray State's Hannah James picked up her 12th win of the season in game one. She fanned nine batters. Taylor Makowsky earned her ninth win of the season in game two
Murray State moved up in the standings with its two wins, scoring in two of the first three innings of game one and then pieced together a seven-run first inning of game two.
