BALL STATE 6, EASTERN ILLINOIS 0
MUNCIE, Ind. -
Eastern Illinois women’s soccer was limited to just one shot in the opening half and one total shot on goal for the match as the Panthers dropped the season opener at Ball State, 6-0, on Friday afternoon.

EIU returns to action next Friday evening at Kansas City and will play its home opener on Sept. 8 against Purdue Fort Wayne.

Ball State jumped on the board in the 16th minutes as Grace Alsop knocked home a cross into the box from Kerrigan Johnson.  It proved to be the first of three goals on the day for Alsop who added goals for the Cardinals in the 45th minute and 68th minute.

EIU’s offensive attack came from one of its freshmen attackers as Nicoletta Anuci had three of EIU’s five shots on the day including the lone shot on goal in the second half.

Seniors Angela Corcoran and Sarah DeWolf added the two other shots for EIU.

Ball State led 2-0 at the half following a goal in the 32nd minute form Tatiana Mason.   Julia Elvbo (54th minute) and Tatiana Hawkins-Dabney (80th) rounded out the Ball State scoring.

JACKSONVILLE STATE 7, ALCORN STATE 0
LORMAN, Miss. -
Senior Emma Meadows and freshman Cynthia Bagozzi collected two goals each in the first half as the Jacksonville State soccer team opened the 2019 season with a 7-0 blanking of Alcorn State at Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium on Friday afternoon.

The season-opening win is the second consecutive for the program after knocking off Louisiana-Monroe in the 2018 season debut. The Gamecocks will now turn their attention to the home opener on Sunday, hosting the Panthers of Florida International. Kick off is set for 1 p.m. at the JSU Soccer Field. Admission is free to all JSU soccer matches. FIU dropped its first match of the season to Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday.

JSU didn't allow an hour and a half weather delay to the start of the match diffuse its quick striking ability. Making her intercollegiate debut on Friday, freshman Cynthia Bagozzi posted the first of her two goals in the first four minutes of the match. The Orlando, Florida native registered her second goal 10 minutes later to give JSU a 2-0 advantage. Junior Alicia Pallister was credited with an assist.

After the freshman posted the first two goals of the season, it was the seniors that added to Jax State's advantage. Cheyenne Carden followed Bagozzi's second goal with a strike to the net a minute later in the 15th minute. Meadows extended the lead with goals in the 22nd and 31st minutes. Freshman Gabriel Clarke dished out the first of two assists in her Gamecock debut. Clarke assisted Nadia Plawiuk on the sixth goal of the first 45 minutes.

Jax State, who has eight new faces in the program, had four freshmen in the starting lineup, highlighted by Bagozzi. Anna Luque, Briana Eads and redshirt freshman Chloe Russo. Russo made her initial start in goal before Morgan Lerch took over keeper duties in the second half.

The Gamecocks turned in a 33-0 advantage in total shots, including a 17-0 differential in the first half.

The fourth senior tacked on the final goal of the opener as Danelle Lindo tallied her first career goal.

TENNESSEE TECH 2, SOUTH ALABAMA 2
TROY, Ala. -
In a match that featured a nearly 90-minute lightning delay, the Tennessee Tech soccer team used a fast start to help pave the way to a 2-2 draw in the season opener with South Alabama in the first match of the Trojan Classic.

The Golden Eagles (0-0-1) raced out to a rapid beginning behind two goals within the tilt's first 20 minutes and change, but the Jaguars (0-0-1) bounced back with two scores of their own late in the first half to knot the tilt at 2-2 heading into the break. With both offenses seemingly clicking behind four combined goals in the first 45 minutes, Mother Nature helped slow things down with the lengthy delay just before the start of the second half.

Playing in her first career match, freshman Bailey Taylor split the pipes just over three minutes into the season, scoring off a pass from sophomore Cassidy Bereda to give Tech the early 1-0 edge. Bereda, who started 12 games in her rookie season a year ago, collected her second career assist on the play.

TTU padded its lead a mere 17 minutes later thanks to a Kendall Powell goal in the 21st minute. The junior out of Cookeville, who paced the Golden Eagles with seven scores last year, wasted no time in securing her first net-finder of 2019 with a lengthy strike that snuck just inside the far post to push the Tech advantage to 2-0.

The Jaguars responded to the pair of quick Golden Eagle goals with two scores of their own to square the match late in the first half. Brenna McPartlan, the 2018 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year who led the club with five goals last season, put South Alabama on the board with a penalty-kick goal in the 34th minute to cut the deficit in half.

Briana Morris provided the equalizer less than 10 minutes later with a goal in the 42nd minute to square the contest at 2-2. Chloe McGlade was credited with an assist on the game-tying score.

The Golden Eagles made the most of their opportunities with seven shots on-goal out of nine total shots in the match. Bailey Taylor led the charge with three shots, all of which were on-goal, while Kendall Powell and Cassidy Bereda notched two shots each. Freshmen Kendall Webb and Emily Carlevato each tallied one attempt.

The Jaguars posted 16 shots, eight of which were on-goal. Briana Morris paced the way with four tries, two of which were on-point.

In her first collegiate start, red-shirt junior Isabelle Austin recorded six saves in goal, keeping the Jaguars scoreless after intermission. The Sylvania, Ohio product collected four of her six halts in the second stanza. Across the way, Justice Stanford secured five stops.

15 Golden Eagles appeared in the affair, including four freshmen (Taylor, Webb, Carlevato, Meg Ivey) who made their collegiate debuts. Senior Tina Marolt, who played in only five matches last year after suffering a season-ending injury, played in all 110 minutes. Kendall Powell, Bailey Taylor, Ashley Grimes and Isabelle Austin also played the duration of the match.

TTU will conclude the Trojan Classic with a Sunday battle against the host Troy. First kick is slated for 2 p.m. CT.

AUSTIN PEAY 1, CHATTANOOGA 1
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -
A ninth-minute goal from Katie Kenward gave Austin Peay State University women's soccer team an early lead, but the Govs were unable to hang on for the win as the double overtime season opener against Chattanooga ended in a 1-1 draw.

In the ninth minute, an Ashley Whittaker cross was deflected by the Chattanooga goalkeeper. Junior Katie Kenward found the loose ball and the back of the net for the Govs first goal of the regular season. Chattanooga was able to tie the game in the 87th minute, but that was all the scoring for the night as the season opener ended in a 1-1 draw after two overtime periods.

The Governors took an early lead when Kenward put one past the Chattanooga keeper off an assist from Whittaker. Controlling the tempo for most of the night, the Govs fired six more shots and two more shots on goal than the Mocs in regulation. After taking an early lead, a solid effort from the Govs' defense kept Chattanooga off the board until the 87th minute, when the Mocs were able to tie the game and send it to overtime.

In the first overtime, both teams fired a shot in the 97th minute but neither team was able to score in a hard-fought 15 minutes. In the second overtime, senior keeper Mary Parker Powell made two saves to keep the game tied at one in tonight's marathon contest.

The Govs continued to be aggressive on the offensive attack, getting off ten shots, half of which were on goal, in tonight's 2OT match. Junior Claire Larose and freshman Anna McPhie led the Govs with two attempts on goal each.

The Governors will be back in action 5 p.m., Sunday, at Middle Tennessee.
