CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Renee Semaan and Claire Larose found the back of the net on a balmy Senior Day at Morgan Bros. Soccer Field en route to a shutout victory for Austin Peay State University soccer.
Claire Larose found the back of the net for the the first time in 2019 today off of an assist from Anna McPhie in the 18th minute. Senior-captain Renee Semaan added another goal in the 56th minute when she put a header in the back of the net off of a corner-kick assist from Morgan Drawdy. Senior-keeper Mary Parker Powell kept a clean sheet on the defensive end, as the Govs shut out Evansville on Senior Day.
The Governors found the back of the net on their first shot on goal of the day. In the 18th minute, Larose took a pass from McPhie in front of the net, and fired it past the Purple Ace’s keeper for her season’s first goal. Freshman Jisela Dall fired her second shot on goal of the season in the 39th minute, but was unable to beat the keeper. Gov’s keeper Mary Parker Powell made two saves in the first half to take a 1-0 lead into the break.
The second half started quickly for the Govs, who found the back of the net in the 56th minute off of a corner kick. Morgan Drawdy took the corner, and sent a ball into the box that ended up in the Evansville goal. It was originally credited an own goal, but after a review the goal was credited to the Semaan, who beat the Purple Ace’s keeper with a header off the assist from Drawdy.
The Governors almost scored again in the 62nd and 63rd minute, when Drawdy, Dall, and McPhie all put shots on goal, only to have them saved by the Evansville goalkeeper.
The Governors defense held tough, allowing only one shot on goal the in the second half – a long shot from just across midfield as time was expiring. Senior-keeper Mary Parker Powell made three saves to post her first shutout of 2019 and the 10th of her career, as the Governors won 2-0.
The Govs will kick off Ohio Valley Conference at 7 p.m. Thursday when they host SIUE at Morgan Bros. Soccer Field. Later in the weekend, the Governors will travel to Cincinnati for a 6 p.m. Saturday match against the Bearcats.
BELMONT 1, INDIANA STATE 1
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Belmont women's soccer team finished non-conference play with a draw to Indiana State 1-1 in double overtime on Sunday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.
Julie Garst scored the Bruins' first goal in the 16th minute off an assist from Avery Nowak, marking the first time in Garsts' career she has scored in three consecutive games. Indiana State responded with a late goal, tying the score with 18 seconds left to play in the first half.
Lily Herman came up with a career high 15 saves to help force a scoreless second half and overtime, six more than her previous career high.
Belmont starts OVC play at SEMO on Friday at 6:30 pm.
EASTERN ILLINOIS 3, CHICAGO STATE 1
CHARLESTON, Ill. - Eastern Illinois women’s soccer scored three second half goals in a period of seven minutes as the Panthers picked up their first win of the season with a 3-1 victory over Chicago State.
EIU improved to 1-4 on the season while CSU fell to 0-8.
Chicago State took a 1-0 lead in the first half as Barbara Castellanos took a misplayed ball over midfield and raced towards the net. She was able to beat EIU’s goalkeeper in a 1-v-1 situation to put the Cougars up in the 38th minute.
EIU applied its offensive pressure equally in both halves finishing with 18 total shots after nine attempts in each half. In the second half, the pressure paid off for the Panthers with Nicoletta Anuci tying the match at 1-1 as she had a one touch goal to the lower right hand corner of the net following a pass from Haylee Renick in the 62nd minute.
Four minutes later during an EIU attack in the goal box, CSU was called for a penalty providing the Panthers with a penalty kick opportunity. Lexi Ketterhagen converted the PK to put EIU up 2-1 in the 66th minute.
The Panthers tacked on an insurance goal in the 69th minute as Kenzie Balcerak found Sarah DeWolf breaking towards the goal in the middle of the field. DeWolf would beat the Cougars keeper for the final score.
DeWolf had a team high four shots with two on goal. EIU finished with a total of nine shots on the net.
MISSOURI STATE 1, MURRAY STATE 0
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Murray State women's soccer concluded the non-conference portion of the 2019 schedule on Sunday when they traveled to Springfield, Missouri to take on Missouri State. Despite allowing just one shot on goal, the Racers fell to the Bears – 1-0 would be the final score from Betty and Bobby Allison South Stadium.
The Bears opened the scoring in the 18th minute when Olina Einarsdottir found the back of the net to give Missouri State a 1-0 lead.
The Missouri State goal would be the only shot on target for either team through the first half of action as both defenses were effective in cutting out the attack through the first 45 minutes of play.
The Racers began to generate some attacking opportunities early in the second half, however, as Miyah Watford broke free from the last defender and sent a shot over the crossbar just minutes after the halftime break.
Just inside the final 25 minutes of the match, Murray State would once again see a promising attacking run when Elizabeth Tilton headed a ball in behind the back line for Watford, but the ensuing shot missed just over the bar once more as the Racers were unable to make a dent in the score line.
The Racers were awarded two free kicks in the attacking third in the late stages of the match, but could not capitalize on the opportunities as a strong Missouri State defensive effort held off the Racer attack in the closing moments.
The Racers outshot their opponent 7-3 overall while landing three on target to Missouri State's one, but in the end the Racers would come up short on the road – falling to the Bears by a score of 1-0. Sunday's defeat marks the first time the Racers have been shutout through eight games in 2019.
Senior Miyah Watford led the Racers with four shots on the day, while Joselle Morche was responsible for two of the three Murray State shots on target.
The Racers will be back in action on Sunday when they host SIUE in their Ohio Valley Conference opener at Cutchin Field in Murray, Kentucky.
EASTERN KENTUCKY 2 AKRON 1
AKRON, Ohio - Junior Kylie Thompson’s golden goal with 30 seconds remaining in double overtime lifted the Eastern Kentucky University soccer team to a thrilling 2-1 win over Akron on Sunday afternoon in the Colonels’ non-conference finale at First Energy Stadium.
The game was locked in a scoreless draw until the 86th minute when redshirt sophomore Sarah Owusu converted a penalty kick to give the Colonels a late 1-0 advantage. It was Owusu’s first goal of the season.
Less than two minutes later, however, Akron’s Ashley Amato responded with a penalty kick goal of her own to equalize for the Zips.
In the waning seconds of double overtime, Thompson’s strike finally won it for the Colonels. The build-up to the goal was textbook. Owusu found senior Monica Rios streaking across the middle of the field. Rios threaded the needle ahead to Thompson, who was able to set just outside the box and unleash a ball off her right foot that found the lower left corner of the net.
It was Thompson’s team-leading fourth goal of the season. It was the sixth assist of Rios’ career.
Owusu led all players in the game with four shots, two of which were on frame. Sophomore Baylee Lanter attempted three shots.
Junior center back Katie Shaffer player all 110 minutes on EKU’s backline.
Sophomore goalkeeper Zoe Aguirre surrendered only the late PK and made four saves in the game.
EKU (2-6) will now open OVC play at Jacksonville State on Friday night, Sept. 20. First touch is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.
ARKANSAS STATE 1, SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 0
JONESBORO, Ark. - Southeast Missouri (2-3-0) outshot Arkansas State (4-3-0), but dropped a 1-0 decision Sunday. 12-7 Sunday as the Redhawks fell 1-0 in Jonesboro, Arkansas.
SEMO held a 12-7 advantage in shots. Esmie Gonzales led the Redhawks with three of those shots, including two on goal. Gonzales now has 194 shots in her career as the all-time leader in school history.
The game remained scoreless until the Red Wolves scored in the 70th minute on a goal by Dana O'Boye.
ASU had three shots on goal, with Bailey Redden making two saves.
SEMO opens Ohio Valley Conference play at home against Belmont (Sept. 20) and Eastern Illinois (Sept. 22).
IOWA STATE 2, SIUE 1
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The SIUE women's soccer team fell short in overtime to Iowa State, 2-1 on Sunday at Korte Stadium.
The team battled through the first half, creating many opportunities, but did not find the back of the net. The first half resulted in a scoreless draw.
The Cyclones scored first right after halftime at minute 46.
It was not until two minutes left on the clock that the Cougars found the back of the net. Angel Ikeda scored a header off a corner kick from Allison Wendt to send the game into overtime.
Within the first minutes of overtime play, the Cyclones scored also off a corner kick.
The Cougars will open up conference play on the road this week.
The team will travel to Clarksville, Tennessee to take on Austin Peay on Thursday at 7 p.m.
UT MARTIN 2, WRIGHT STATE 2
DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer program wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule on Sunday night with a road matchup at Wright State, pushing the hosts to the brink before finishing the game in a 2-2 tie.
The Skyhawks (2-3-3) outshot the Raiders 20-15 while placing seven total shots on goal.
The game’s scoring began in the 59th minute at redshirt-sophomore Jill Hildreth tallied her fifth goal of the season to take an advantage before Wright State responded with goals in the 70th and 88th minutes to take its first lead. The lead would be short-lived however, as junior Jacalyn Schubring recorded her first career goal in the 89th minute to force overtime.
UT Martin’s Alice Adams would tally a team-high seven shots while Bella Roberts ranked second with three attempts. Hildreth and Schubring scored the two goals for the Skyhawks while Adams and Nicole Collins recorded their respective second assists of the season.
Junior Erica Myers held her own in goal, allowing just two goals. Myers would also tally six saves in 110 minutes of play, including a pair of potential game-saving saves at the end of the first overtime period.
Wright State (5-1-2) The Raiders found its first goal off a penalty kick which Michelle Rings punched in while the fourth goal of the season by Brittney Petrosky gave the team its lone lead of the contest.
UT Martin will open its Ohio Valley Conference title defense with a pair of home league matchups this week. The Skyhawks will host Eastern Illinois on Friday, Sept. 20 before taking on Belmont on Sunday, Sept. 22.
SOUTHERN ILLINOIS 2, MOREHEAD STATE 1
CARBONDALE, Ill. – After playing to a 1-1 draw in regulation, the Morehead State Soccer team fell to Southern Illinois, 2-1, when Salukis' midfielder Ellie Lewis scored the match-winning golden goal on a free kick in the 92nd minute on Sunday afternoon at Lew Hartzog Track & Field Complex.
The Eagles struck first in the match when freshman midfielder Gabby Nastasi put home her second goal of the 2019 season in the 14th minute. With the goal, Nastasi now leads MSU in goals (2) and points (4).
SIU answered quickly with the equalizing goal as forward Madison Meiring was able to get one past Morehead State freshman goalkeeper Grace Gaffney in the 24th minute.
The teams played neck-and-neck for the remainder of regulation with both firing 13 shot attempts and taking six corners a piece.
The 13 shot attempts by the Eagles stamped a season-high for shot attempts on the road. Junior midfielder Katie Quinn paced MSU with three shots in the match.
In goal, Gaffney tied a career-best save total with three on 13 shots faced. For the Salukis, goalkeepers Dariana Mihalache started and played the first 45 minutes before Maddy Alaluf finished the match. Alaluf recorded four saves while Mihalache saved two.
Southern Illinois improved to 4-4-1 and snapped a two-game losing streak with the win.
In defeat, Morehead State falls to 1-6 overall. The loss was the Eagles second overtime loss of the season, having dropped a 2-1 double overtime contest at home to Miami (OH) on Sept. 6.
MSU will now shift its focus to Ohio Valley Conference play as they prepare for weekend road tests against Tennessee Tech on Friday at 8:30 p.m. ET and Jacksonville State on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. ET. The Eagles defeated both league foes in 2018 at home, earning a 2-0 win over TTU and a 3-1 triumph against JSU.
MERCER 3, JACKSONVILLE STATE 0
JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - The Jacksonville State soccer team closed out the non-conference portion of the schedule with a 3-0 setback to Mercer on Sunday evening at the JSU Soccer Field.
The Gamecocks will enter Ohio Valley Conference play with a 3-5 overall mark. The Bears improved to 6-1 on the season and won their fifth consecutive match.
The Bears took advantage of a few early miscues by the Gamecocks to post two of their three goals in the opening 45 minutes within a six-minute span. MU's Madeline Alhamra recorded both goals within that time frame. Amaya Evans tacked on the final goal of the contest just before the halftime break. The Bears had 10 of their 14 shots in the first half. JSU limited MU to just four looks in the second half.
JSU collected 11 total shots on the night and had a plus-two advantage in shots over the Bears. The Gamecocks had six in the second half, led by freshman Cynthia Bagozzi and sophomore Cephana Deane. Both Bagozzi and Deane finished with three shots each. All three of Deane's were on goal opportunities. Senior Cheyenne Carden had a pair on looks at the goal.
JSU will close out its homestand next weekend, hosting Eastern Kentucky in the OVC opener on Friday, September 20. Match time is set for 7 p.m. Admission is free to all home JSU soccer matches. The weekend will wrap up on Sunday against Morehead State at 1 p.m.
Both contests will be streamed on ESPN+, the online streaming platform of ESPN.
LIPSCOMB 2, TENNESSEE TECH 0
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Tech soccer team had its chances behind 16 shot attempts, but were unable to dent the scoreboard with a 2-0 loss to Lipscomb in the club's final non-conference match of the season.
The in-state battle saw the Golden Eagles (2-4-2) outshoot an opponent for the third straight contest, matching their second-highest output of the year with the 16 attempts. The Lady Bisons (5-3-0) scored in each half and ended the tilt with 10 shots.
Lipscomb senior Olivia Doak registered a three-point evening, scoring the affair's first goal with a 19th minute strike and then added an assist on a Maycie McKay score in the 85th minute. Doak's net-finder came off a free kick from Leach Cernicky that was batted around through heavy traffic in front of Tech keeper Isabelle Austin, before Doak took control and split the pipes.
McKay's goal came off a Doak cross that saw the 5-foot-6 forward sneak one inside the far post.
Bailey Taylor and Kendall Powell led the match with four shots each. Rachel Blow was Tech's leader with two shots on-goal, while Cassidy Bereda also attempted a pair of tries.
The Golden Eagles produced four shots on-goal, all halted by Lipscomb keeper Melissa Gray. Isabelle Austin ended the evening with one save, as the Lady Bisons attempted just three shots on-goal.
Austin was one of six Golden Eagles to play the entire match. Rachel Blow, Macy Carter, Tina Marolt, Kaitie Shipley and Kendall Webb also went all 90. Carter going the distance came in the freshman's first collegiate start.
With non-conference play in the rearview mirror, Tech prepares for its 10-match OVC slate with a pair of home contests next weekend. The Golden Eagles host Morehead State Friday, Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m., before the purple and gold seal the deal on a program-long, five-match homestand with a Sunday, Sept. 22 meeting against Eastern Kentucky at 1 p.m.
