CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team picked up its first road victory of the season off the foot of sophomore Hendrikje Baurmann who tallied a pair of goals to lift the Skyhawks to a 2-0 Ohio Valley Conference victory at Austin Peay.
The Skyhawks (4-4-4, 2-1-1 OVC) saw Baurmann put the team on the board and never look back with goals in the 29th and 31st minutes. The goals were the third and fourth of her season while pushing her total in league play up to three.
UT Martin would outshoot Austin Peay by a final tally of 8-4 in the contest while Baurmann led the team with four shots on goal. Joining in the action was the trio of Catey Hunt, Nicole Collins and Bella Roberts with shots on goal.
Junior goalkeeper Erica Myers was perfect in goal once again, tallying two saves while recording her fourth shutout of the season and third in OVC play. For her career, Myers has now posted 12 shutouts which rank second in program history.
Austin Peay (1-6-3, 0-2-1 OVC) tallied four shots on the afternoon, including two on goal by Abigail Gemza and Claire Larose. In goal, Mary Parker Powell allowed a pair of goals in the first half while Peyton Powell played a scoreless second half.
MOREHEAD STATE 2, PURDUE FORT WAYNE 0
MOREHEAD, Ky. - Morehead State stepped out of conference play on Sunday and defeated visiting Purdue Fort Wayne, 2-0. With the win the Eagles improved to 4-6-1 overall.
Haley Nelson scored the first goal of the match at the 27:56 mark. Caitlyn Burdine would add an insurance goal with less than two minutes remaining in regulation.
Morehead State goalkeeper Kayla Landman earned the shutout making seven saves in the win.
The Eagles return to OVC action on Friday when it hosts Murray State.
MURRAY STATE 5, SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 0
MURRAY, Ky. -
Murray State women's soccer concluded their three-game homestand in style on Sunday, marching to a 5-0 victory over Southeast Missouri State at Cutchin Field in Murray, Kentucky. The Racers improved to 6-5 overall and 3-0 in the OVC after Sunday's rout of the Redhawks extended Murray State's winning streak to three games to close the month of September. The Racers have now outscored their opponents 15-1 through their first three OVC matches in 2019.
Murray State started fast and never looked back, scoring just 44 seconds into the game when Miyah Watford carried the ball down the left wing before slotting the ball across the penalty area to Rebecca Kubin, who found the net just moments after the opening whistle.
The Racers doubled their lead in the 10th minute when Watford played a ball behind the Redhawk defense, tallying her second assist of the afternoon when Arianna Mendez finished the opportunity to net the first goal of her career, giving her side a 2-0 lead early in the competition.
Less than 60 seconds later, Kubin added her second goal of the day as a ferocious Racer attack jumped out to a 3-0 lead in just 11 minutes of action.
With the help of an impressive defensive effort, the Racers entered the halftime break with a 3-0 advantage, while outshooting their opponent 13-3 through the first 45 minutes of play.
After dishing out a pair of assists, Miyah Watford got on the score sheet herself with a second-half goal, scoring her team-high tenth goal of the season in the 67th minute off a pass from Emma Heise.
Elizabeth Tilton would tack on one final strike in the 81st minute when she scorched the net with a long-range missile, finding the top corner to put an exclamation mark on Murray State's 5-0 victory.
For Tilton, the goal is her third of the season, while Kubin's brace brings her goal total to seven on the year.
Additionally, freshman goalkeeper Jasmine Rosell recorded a pair of saves between the posts to earn her second shutout of the season.
Southeast Missouri sophomore Bailey Redden made 10 saves on the day, one shy of her career-high.
The Racers outshot the Redhawks 24-10 (16-2 on target) while winning the possession battle with 55% of the ball on the day.
SIUE 6, JACKSONVILLE STATE 1
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The SIUE women's soccer team wrapped up homecoming week with a 6-1 win over Jacksonville State, for their first OVC win of the season.
The Cougars started the game off strong by scoring the first goal of the game at the 5-minute mark with a goal from MacKenzie Litzsinger and an assist from Becca Jostes. The team responded again at the 10-minute mark with a goal from Courtney Benning.
The Cougars were able to score another goal right before the half at minute 37 with a goal from Megan Keevan and an assist from Lily Schnieders. The team would enter the second half with a 3-0 lead.
The team kept the momentum going in the second half, scoring another goal five minutes into the second half. Angel Ikeda scored a goal with an assist from Jostes, her second on the day.
The fifth goal for the Cougars came at minute 61 from Schnieders with an assist from Emma Dutko.
The team had a 5-0 shutout going until minute 80 struck, where the Gamecocks' Reilly Kucko found the top right corner to score their first goal.
With six minutes remaining in regulation, Ashley Guardado found the back of the net with an assist from Andrea Frerker.
The Cougars outshot the Gamecocks on the day 21-11.
In goal for the team, Jensen Schoch picked up the win and recorded six saves on the afternoon.
BELMONT 1, EASTERN ILLINOIS 0
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Thanks to a game-winning goal from senior AB Hawkins, the Belmont women's soccer team danced its way to a 1-0 double overtime victory over Eastern Illinois on Sunday at Rose Park.
Hawkins' goal was the third of her career, with her score marking the first Belmont game-winning goal in overtime since Emily Nguyen's score to defeat SEMO on Oct. 18, 2018.
With Belmont looking to bounce back after a last-second loss to Morehead State, the Bruins immediately fired on all cylinders. Belmont became the offensive aggressor in the opening 20 minutes, creating five early shot opportunities.
Despite not getting the go-ahead goal in the first half, Belmont continued to put its foot on the gas pedal in the second half. Belmont blasted through the EIU defenders for a one-on-one opportunity, but the shot just missed wide left to keep the match knotted 0-0.
Belmont collected a 26 shots on the afternoon, marking the most shots accumulated by the Bruins since Sept. 7, 2018 against UAB.
Play only intensified as the match reached the first overtime, with both teams stepping up their defense. The lone shot of the first overtime once again came at the hands of Belmont, missing just wide in another one-on-one opportunity.
With 10 minutes left to snatch their first win in conference play, the Bruins set up Julie Garst for two clean shot opportunities. Garst shot twice with ease, but both hit the crossbar of the goal and resulted in a corner kick opportunity.
Despite the first corner kick turning into three shot opportunities with just over five minutes left, the Bruins were determined to not end the match in a tie with their last corner occuring 20 seconds later.
Clements' kick soared in the air, allowing Hawkins to squeeze the header in the right corner of the goal and give the Bruins their first win in OVC play. The goal was Hawkins' first since Oct. 16, 2016, with Clements registering her first career assist.
Sarah DeWolf and Pilar Barrio registered the shots on goal for EIU. Angela Corcoran and Kenzie Balcerak added shots for the Panthers.
