#OVCExtra: A Conversation with Ryan Hinson
Members of the
OVC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) recently had a virtual meeting to discuss items that were impacting student-athletes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During the meeting the group discussed how they are engaging with their teammates, how they are doing course work remotely, what they have learned during social distancing and what they miss the most about being on campus.
Our final feature is with Morehead State junior rifle athlete
Ryan Hinson. Hinson is a native of Ridgefield, Washington and was a first-team All-OVC selection in smallbore this past season.
What has been a pleasant surprise about your current situation learning and engaging remotely?
"I am sure no one wants to be quarantined for as long as we have been, but it does make things easier in a way. Everything you need to do can be done from home and it is much easier to transition from task to task."
What is one tip you have learned to successfully complete your academic work remotely?
"One HUGE thing that has helped me complete my work remotely is to set up a workstation or area dedicated to your own work. With two parents working from home and another brother taking online classes as well it is difficult to find space for yourself. I went out and purchased a small desk for my room and created a little office corner dedicated to doing my schoolwork. This helps me stay focused and create that mindset for productive work."
What have you done to keep a positive attitude during our social distancing?
"Keep in contact with people! We don't realize how much we rely on social interaction with the people we see almost every day. Keep talking to them and find that positivity in people."
What have you learned about yourself in this time of adversity?
"One thing I have learned about myself is that I care a lot about social interaction. Without it has been difficult to keep up with everything since I am not necessarily a person who likes to communicate online and conduct work that way."
What have you missed most about not being on campus this spring?
"I have missed my people the most. My team and the entire athletic community at Morehead. I was so excited for spring sports and seeing everyone preform their best."
