COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - David Gist rushed for two touchdowns as Tennessee Tech scored 24 unanswered points in the second half to come from behind to best No. 13 Austin Peay 27-21.
The game was the first of the unprecedented spring season for both teams and the only OVC game of the day after three others were postponed because of winter weather.
Hayden Olsen put Tennessee Tech (1-0, 1-0 OVC) on the board with a 25-yard field goal late in the first quarter. But Austin Peay scored the next 14 points, as freshman Draylen Ellis threw a 22-yard touchdown and then ran for a 16-yard score, putting the Govs (0-4, 0-1 OVC) on top 14-3 midway threw the third quarter.
Bailey Fisher then hooked up with Metrius Flemin on a 13-yard touchdown past, and Gist scored on runs of 2 and 3 yards for the Golden Eagles. Olson added a 32-yard field goal with 3:46 to play.
Austin Peay would then scored on a 14-yard pass from Bryce Robinson to DeAngelo Wilson with 12 seconds to play. The Govs would recover the onside kick and Robinson had a chance to to throw a winning touchdown pass, but the ball sailed over the end zone.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for TTU against its in-state rival.
