SIUE 3, EASTERN KENTUCKY 2
LOUISVILLE, Ky
. - SIUE women's soccer led early and never looked back, as the Cougars took down Eastern Kentucky, 3-2, in Tuesday afternoon's season opener.

Taylor Dolt got the scoring started for SIUE with a strong goal in the 39th minute  in A quick five minutes later, Mackenzie Litzsinger showed why she was named a Player to Watch in the Ohio Valley Conference, taking a pass from Lily Schneiders to score her first goal of the season. Kayla Klipsch led the Cougars' attack through much of the match, assisting on Dolt's opening goal and netting the game winner in the 73rd minute. Taylor Spiller stood between the sticks for the full 90 minutes, posting four saves on six shots on goal.

Today's match, which was held at the Louisville City Football Club Training Facility in Louisville, Kentucky, due to poor field conditions at Eastern Kentucky University, marks the first of 10 matches set to be played this season, with all matches being played against fellow OVC members.

TENNESSEE TECH 1, AUSTIN PEAY 0
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn
. - The Tennessee Tech soccer team started its 2020-21 campaign on the right foot, as the Golden Eagles marched into Austin Peay and left with a 1-0 nod Tuesday afternoon in the first of a 10-match, OVC-only spring schedule.

Freshman Meredith Nye tallied her first career goal in the 32nd minute to account for the tilt's scoring, while Tech's defense yielded only one shot on-goal to push the purple and gold to the shutout victory.

Scoreless two thirds into the opening stanza, Sarah Block set up for a corner, one of 10 taken throughout the course of the contest for TTU. Block's serve connected with Nye, who promptly headed it past leaping try of APSU goalkeeper Peyton Powell for Nye's first career goal. Block was credited with an assist on the play.

Minutes later it looked as if Tech had doubled up the margin on another set piece, but a Cassidy Bereda goal off a header was wiped off the board due to an offsides call.

Nye's score marked one of four shots on-goal for the Golden Eagles, with Natalie Rolen, Chloe Smith and Yao Giada Zhou accounting for the other three. Giada Zhou paced the club with three shots in her first collegiate match, while Smith generated a pair of attempts.

Austin Peay's lone shot on-point took place in the 62nd minute behind an Ashely Whittaker try, but Isabelle Austin made the stop for the Tech senior's lone halt of the match that helped her record a fourth career shutout. APSU keeper Peyton Powell picked up three saves across the way.

Claire Larose was the only Governor with more than one shot, accounting for two of the club's seven total attempts.

Five Golden Eagles played all 90 minutes, with Austin, Selma Askildsen, Emily Carlevato, Macy Carter and Nye all going the distance. Askildsen, Nye, Giada Zhou, Gabby Garcia and Katelyn Farmer all made their collegiate debuts in the contest.

Behind two goals in the final 16 minutes of play, the Belmont University women's soccer team grabbed a come-from-behind win over Jacksonville State 2-1 in overtime at the JSU Soccer Complex on Tuesday.

Graduate transfer Keely Cartrett scored the game-winning golden goal three minutes into overtime, scoring off a free kick assist from junior Rachel Vernon.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Doyle collected nine saves in her first career start in the net. With the overtime win, Belmont has now won or tied 11 of its last 13 matches dating back to last season.

"After the ball went in, I was like, 'wait the ball went in.' Then I was like, 'wait I scored!' It was so much at once," Cartrett said. "We played a really good game and I'm just really excited that we were able to come out with the win. It was really exciting."

Belmont looked to draw first blood at the 14 minute mark, forcing the Jacksonville State goalkeeper to come out of the goalie box and leaving the net open. The Bruins, however, missed the shot wide and kept the match scoreless.

The Gamecocks tallied four consecutive shots off three corner kicks to close the first period, with Doyle coming up with two saves in the process. Belmont registered a shot at the 24 minute mark, but the Jacksonville State defense prevented the Bruins from any further offensive opportunity in the final 21 minutes of the period.

Scoring the game's first goal 11 minutes into the second period, Jacksonville State held a one-goal lead with 13 minutes left to play. Feeding off sophomore Taylor Dorenkott's first career assist, Nowak tapped in the tying goal at the 77 minute mark and eventually forced overtime.

The goal was Nowak's second career score, with her last one coming on Nov. 3, 2019 in the OVC Quarterfinals at UT Martin.

Drawing a foul three minutes into overtime, the Bruins capitalized off the opportunity. Vernon floated the free kick in the direction of the goal, catching the foot of Cartrett, who knocked it in for the golden goal game winner.

The goal was Cartrett's first collegiate goal since Sept. 22, 2016, when she scored in a match at Arkansas.

MURRAY STATE 3, MOREHEAD STATE 1
MOREHEAD, Ky.
- Murray State women's soccer took the pitch in a competitive match for the first time in 480 days when they traveled to Morehead State for an afternoon clash with the Eagles on Tuesday. The Racers made their return in style, generating three goals behind 11 shots on the day as they cruised to a 3-1 victory in Morehead, Kentucky.

After coming on as a substitute in the 19th minute, sophomore Lilly Strader delivered a perfectly-weighted ball behind back line that would be tucked away neatly by Rebecca Kubin to give the Racers a 1-0 advantage in the 24th minute.

Less than 15 minutes later, the Racers would double the margin when freshman Chloe Barnthouse found the net in her first match in a Murray State uniform. The West Bloomfield, Michigan native ran onto a deflected ball and fended off a defender to slide the ball past the Eagle goalkeeper, making it 2-0 in favor of the Racers in the 33rd.

The Racers entered the halftime interval with a 2-0 lead behind five first-half shots on goal, while the Eagles managed just one shot on target through the first 45 minutes of action.

Even with a two-goal cushion, the Racers continued to pour on a relentless attack, adding another goal in the 52nd minute when Saraya Young put on a dazzling display of individual skill. The sophomore carried the ball more than half the pitch, carving through the Eagle defense before finding the net for her first-career goal to give her side a 3-0 lead early in the second half.

While the Eagles would spoil the clean sheet with a Colleen Swift goal in the 63rd, that would be the extent of the comeback effort as the Racers secured a 3-1 triumph in the season opener.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jenna Villacres made four saves to preserve the victory in goal for Murray State.

While Barnthouse and Young collected their first collegiate goals, it would be career goal number 23 for Kubin. For Strader, the assist is her second in a Racer uniform.

UT MARTIN 1, EASTERN ILLINOIS 0
MARTIN, Tenn
. - – Emely van der Vliet found the back of the net in the 31st minute and the University of Tennessee at Martin’s defense shut out the Eastern Illinois Panthers for a 1-0 victory to kickstart the 2020-21 campaign at Skyhawk Field.

A freshman out of Rosmalen, Netherlands, van der Vliet received a pass from Hendrikje Baurmann and scooted a shot from 15 yards out that was true. That provided UT Martin with a lead it would not concede the rest of the way as the stingy Skyhawk defense only allowed three five shots for the contest.

Erica Myers accounted for her 14th career shutout this evening, making three saves in goal. UT Martin’s defensive quartet of Maria Castaldo, Jacalyn Schubring, Kamryn Chappell and Kiarnie Latham all played 90 minutes to extend the Panthers’ scoreless streak to 373:49 in the all-time series against the two Ohio Valley Conference rivals.

The Skyhawks placed 11 of their 19 shot attempts on goal tonight, led by Lotte Koot and Jill Hildreth’s three shots apiece. Alice Adams joined van der Vliet with a team-high two shots on goal.

Adams and Koot each peppered Eastern Illinois goalkeeper Daniela Bermeo with shots on goal in the first 3:23. Myers scooped up her first save of the evening in the 13th minute before Bella Roberts and van der Vliet came away with shots on goal in a seven-minute span.

The first goal of the 2020-21 campaign came via the right foot of van der Vliet, who found paydirt a little over 30 minutes into the contest. Hildreth (35th minute) and Castaldo (41st minute) also tacked on shots on goal before UT Martin took a 1-0 advantage into the intermission.

Myers collected back-to-back saves early in the second half, stopping Panther attempts in the 54th and 55th minutes.

Adams, Skylar Boes, Baurmann and Jaden Hildreth each did their part to add insurance goals for the Skyhawks with shots on goal but Bermeo made four saves to keep the score at 1-0.

Ultimately, the vaunted Skyhawk defense took care of business as Eastern Illinois could only manage one shot attempt over the final 32:50.
