EASTERN ILLINOIS 1, MOREHEAD STATE 0
CHARLESTON, Ill. - Haylee Renick made the first goal of the Eastern Illinois women’s soccer season a big one as she knocked home the match winner in the second overtime period to lift EIU to a 1-0 win over Morehead State.
Renick’s match winner lifted EIU to 1-1 on the season while Morehead State fell to 0-2.
After the two schools played a scoreless first 100 minutes of the match, EIU was able to break through as Itxaso Aguero found Renick near the mouth of the goal and she tapped in the winner in the 105th minute. EIU’s goal was triggered by a corner kick for the Panthers.
Both schools had scoring chances in the first half as Nicoletta Anuci sent a ball in on net in the 26th minute that was deflected and Kenzie Balcerak’s shot on goal was swept away by a Morehead State defender. Kate Larbes put a shot on the crossbar and the redirect was cleared away by the EIU defense in the 38th minute.
In the second half EIU would put three more shots on goal with Serra Pizano making a charge from the right side for one shot while Aguero and Anuci both added shots on goal.
Larbes would add shots on goal in the second period and first overtime session while Colleen Swift had a shot on goal in the second. The Eagles had another shot hit the post in the second half.
Daniela Bermeo had three saves in the win for EIU. Michelle Jerantowski finished with four saves.
MURRAY STATE 3, EASTERN KENTUCKY 2
MURRAY, Ky. - Murray State women's soccer made its 2020-21 home debut in front of an enthusiastic crowd on Tuesday as the Racers hosted Eastern Kentucky at Cutchin Field. The Racers (2-0) extended their home OVC winning streak to six matches dating back to 2019 as they earned three more points with a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Colonels.
Eastern Kentucky put the Racers under pressure when Rylie Jucker put the Colonels in front in the sixth minute, but the Racers equalized in the 26th when freshman Chloe Barnthouse found the net for the second time in as many games with a headed goal from a Hailey Cole corner kick.
Murray State thought they had earned the go-ahead goal with just seconds remaining in the first half, but Izzy Heckman's 45th-minute strike would be disallowed when referees ruled that time had expired before the ball crossed the goal line as the game remained level at 1-1 entering the halftime break.
While the halftime stats showed an 11-3 shot advantage in favor of the Racers to pair with 58% of possession through the first 45 minutes, it would actually be EKU who posted the next goal when Audrey Anderson did so in the 56th minute to give the Colonels a 2-1 advantage.
The Racers continued to press high up the pitch in response, and their efforts were rewarded in the 81st minute when Rebecca Kubin netted the equalizer with a one-time finish off a cross from Symone Cooper.
With overtime seemingly inevitable in the closing stages with the game even at 2-2, the Racers would finish the job in normal time when freshman Hailey Cole put away a rebound off of Rebecca Kubin's initial strike to give the Racers a 3-2 lead in the 88th minute.
The Racers outshot the Colonels 22-5 on the day while owning 62% of the possession.
Kubin and Barnthouse now have two goals on the year, while Cole's strike is the first of her collegiate career.
Kubin's goal also moves her up a spot on Murray State's all-time scoring list as her 24 career goals is now tied with Rebekah Clay (2005-08) for sixth in program history.
Goalkeeper Jenna Villacres made three saves in the winning effort.
SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 3, JACKSONVILLE STATE 1
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri women's soccer (1-0-0, 1-0-0 OVC) overpowered Jacksonville State (0-2-0, 0-2-0 OVC), 3-1, Friday evening at Houck Field to secure its first victory of the 2020-21 season.
Lauren Welker, Kiana Khedoo and Kate Daus all tallied their first career goals in the victory.
SEMO, the 2019 Ohio Valley Conference regular-season champions, wasted no time in the contest, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the second minute of regulation. Welker sprinted into the offensive zone and zipped a shot past Aneesa O'Brien from a feed from Lexie Hacker.
The Redhawks extended their advantage to 2-0 right before halftime. Khedoo, a freshman from Brampton, Ontario, Canada, blasted a shot into the left corner of the net for her first career goal in her first collegiate contest. Nadiia Ivanchenko posted her first career assist on the play.
SEMO outshot the Gamecocks, 8-3, in the first half of play.
Jacksonville State cut the Redhawks edge to 2-1 early in the second period. Cephana Deane headed a cross from Brookelyn Still in the 48th minute.
SEMO regrew its lead to two at the 71:02 mark. Daus chipped in a shot from the 20-yard line over the head of O'Brien to push the margin to 3-1.
The Redhawks outshot JSU, 12-9, in 90 minutes of play with nine on net. Welker and Ivanchenko (three total shots) paced SEMO with two shots on goal each. Morgan McCourt posted two shots in the win.
Junior Bailey Redden competed in the full 90 minutes Friday and made five saves for the win. O'Brien had five saves while allowing three goals.
Emma Brune, a Saxony Lutheran graduate, made her first career start Friday. Brune is the eighth member of her family to compete athletically for SEMO athletics.
Ivanchenko, a Lviv, Ukraine native, also made her first career start Friday. Freshmen Maddie Paulson and Faith Liljegren both made their Redhawk debuts in the win.
UT MARTIN 1, BELMONT 0
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Skylar Boes struck for the first goal of her University of Tennessee at Martin career and the Skyhawk defense blanked the host Belmont Bruins for a 1-0 soccer victory at ES Rose Park.
With the win, UT Martin improves to 2-0 to start the season for only the third time in school history (first time since the 2014 campaign).
In a rematch of the 2019 Ohio Valley Conference tournament, the Skyhawks outshot Belmont by a 15-3 margin – placing over half (eight) of their attempts on goal. On the flipside, the remarkable UT Martin defense held the Bruins without a shot on goal en route to its second shutout of the young season. As a result, Erica Myers notched her 26th career victory in goal.
Boes’ clutch goal came at the right time for the Skyhawks, finding the back of the net in the 75th minute. Emely van der Vliet and Hendrikje Baurmann were each credited with an assist on the play. Van der Vliet (team-best five shots, two shots on goal) and Alice Adams (tied for team-high with a pair of shots on goal) applied pressure on Bruin goalkeeper Sarah Doyle throughout the evening.
Bella Roberts (19th minute), Lotte Koot (24th minute), van der Vliet (28th minute) and Adams (33rd minute) were each responsible for shots on goal in the first half.
Meanwhile, the UT Martin defense was off the charts in the opening 45 minutes, not allowing Belmont to take a single shot.
Van der Vliet attempted another shot on goal in the 56th minute before Maria Castaldo sent a shot on target a little under four minutes later but Doyle was there for the save to keep the scoreless tie.
After Boes became the hero with her goal, UT Martin’s defense took it from there. Belmont was unable to find a rhythm as the Bruins could only manage one shot attempt for the rest of the match and it was wide in the 86th minute.
SIUE 3, AUSTIN PEAY 2
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - SIUE women's soccer got off to a blazing hot start in the Cougars' first match at Korte Stadium, as MacKenzie Litzinger's brace led SIUE past the visiting Austin Peay Governors.
The Cougars netted their first goal in the seventh minute, as Litzinger received a pass from Lydia Harris to put the Red & White up 1-0. That would be the only score for either team during the opening half, despite the Cougars attempting 12 shots during the first 45 minutes. SIUE came out in the second half determined to extend the lead, and two goals in the span of 46 seconds did just that. Andrea Frerker netted a goal in the 57th minute and MacKenzie Litzinger secured her second goal of the match and third of the season off assists from Lily Schnieders and Maria Haro. The Governors scored two late goals to cut the Cougar lead to one, but the final whistle sounded and SIUE emerged with their second victory of the season.
Burton also lauded the efforts of the Cougars' captain Andrea Frerker, saying "I thought [she] put in a real captain's performance tonight. All over effecting so much of the game. She was leading from the front as they say."
