COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - Morehead State men's basketball had a slow start in its game at Tennessee Tech Monday night, but the Eagles caught fire late in the first half, going on a 24-2 run to end the half, as they finished off the Golden Eagles 70-56 at the Eblen Center.
Morehead State improved to 17-6 overall and to 9-1 in the league with its third straight win over TTU.
Trailing 19-18 with 9:03 left in the opening half, junior guard Skyelar Potter hit a turnaround jumper that ended up igniting a 22-0 run for the visitors. Tech didn't score again until 1:37 left on the clock as MSU led 40-19. Drew Thewell's steal and length of the court dash resulted in a buzzer beating layup as the Eagles led 42-21 at the break.
Morehead State continued to hold a significant advantage in the final half, building as much as a 26-point cushion (55-29) at the 12:58 mark.
Potter concluded the action with his third double-double of the 2021-22 season with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while second-year freshman Johni Broome led the squad with 16 points and also grabbed eight rebounds. The Eagles were, however, out-rebounded by TTU 44-39.
Tray Hollowell had a tough night shooting, finishing with just five points, but he did extend his streak of making at least one three-pointer to 29 games.
The Eagles held Tech to only 34 percent shooting while hitting 45 percent themselves. The Eagles also dished out 24 assists on 30 made buckets, including seven from Ta'Lon Cooper. Hollowell handed out four assists, while Jake Wolfe swiped four TTU mistakes.
AUSTIN PEAY 68, SIUE 63 (2OT)
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - In a game many Govs fans won't soon forget, the Austin Peay men's basketball team pulled away late to secure a double-overtime thriller over SIU Edwardsville, 68-63 inside the Winfield Dunn Center on Monday night.
Austin Peay earned its first double-overtime victory since Jan. 15, 1954 against Milligan and recorded its first overtime home victory since Jan. 21, 2017 against Murray State. The Govs also attempted a school-record 37 three-pointers on Monday night, breaking the previous record of 36 set back in 1995-96 against UT Martin. The Govs also broke the record for most three-point attempts in a single-game inside the Winfield Dunn Center.
Austin Peay had three score in double figures on Monday against the Cougars, led by reigning Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Week Elijah Hutchins-Everett with 20 points. Hutchins-Everett was 8-of-13 from the field with six rebounds in 37 minutes of action. The Orange, N.J., native scored nine points in the second half and six in the two overtime sessions.
Behind Hutchins-Everett in scoring was senior Elton Walker with a season-high 13 points, six of which game in the two overtimes. Walker shot 5-of-8 from the field while recording a team-high nine rebounds, two of which came on the offensive glass. Walker scored six of his 13 points in overtime.
Rounding out the double-digit scoring was junior Carlos Paez with 11 points on 3-of-10 shooting from the field. All three of Paez's field goals came from long distance as the junior guard also tallied a career-high eight rebounds and six assists. Off the bench, junior Cameron Copeland registered eight points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field.
Freshman Drew Calderon registered seven points on 2-of-8 shooting from the field followed by junior Alec Woodard with six and redshirt senior Tariq Silver with three.
As a team the Govs shot 38.1 percent from the field and was 9-of-37 from behind the three-point line. Austin Peay made the most of their opportunity at the free-throw line, going 11-of-12. APSU outrebounded SIUE, 44-40 with each team registering 10 offensive rebounds.
