JAMES MADISON 4, MOREHEAD STATE 0
MOREHEAD, Ky. - The Morehead State soccer team couldn't quite find the back of the net Sunday, as it fell to James Madison 4-0 in full time. The Eagles fought hard for 90 minutes, but couldn't overcome the Dukes, falling to 1-1-0 on the season.
After the loss, Head Coach Chris Fox offered a few thoughts on the match. "A challenging game against a well coached, top quality opponent. There is a lot for us to learn to continue our growth. In spite of the loss, there were many positives to take from the game."
JMU netted one goal in what was a tightly contested first half. Michelle Jerantowski saved the first three shots on goal by the Dukes, which all came in the first 15 minutes of the contest. After a complete line change by JMU, Suwaibatu Mohammed tucked a goal into the top right corner just past a diving Jerantowski to open the scoring. Hadley Cytron has a shot blocked on a great opportunity in the fourth minute of the match, one of three shots by the Eagles in the first half.
15 minutes into the second half, Amanda Attanasi found the back of the net to make the score 2-0 in favor of JMU. Morehead State ramped up the pressure, but a potential foul that could have resulted in a penalty kick for the Eagles did not go its way. JMU scored two more times before the final horn sounded, as Sophia Verrecchia scored on a counterattack for the Dukes in the 73rd minute, and on a penalty kick in the 80th.
JMU finished with 11 corner kicks to just four for Morehead State, with shots finishing 11-4 in favor of JMU as well.
The Eagles hit the road this week for the first time in 2022, heading to Marshall on Thursday afternoon and Evansville on Sunday. A road match with VMI the following week awaits before MSU returns home to host Queens (N.C.) on September 4.
