MOREHEAD, Ky. - In a fast-paced, physical game on Thursday night at Johnson Arena, Morehead State took down Marshall thanks to stellar defense and timely shooting.
The Eagles (3-4) had two players score in double figures, led by Katie Novik, who had 14 points, nine rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks. Paris McBride added 13 points and three steals off the bench and Hallie Rhodes added nine points.
Rhodes pulled down three offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Morehead State, grabbing 11 boards and turning them into 10 second chance points.
Morehead State forced 23 Marshall turnovers in Thursday's game. The Eagles turned those takeaways into 20 points on the offensive end of the floor. Novik's three steals led the way for Morehead State.
Defensively, Morehead State held Marshall's leading scorer Roshala Scott (21.0 PPG) to just four points in the victory.
After falling behind 17-11, Morehead State went on a 5-0 run with 1:56 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from McBride, to narrow its deficit to 17-16. The Eagles deficit remained the same as they entered the second quarter trailing 19-18.
Marshall kept adding to that lead, building a 25-20 advantage before Morehead State went on an 8-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from McBride, to take a 28-25 lead. The Thundering Herd then came roaring back to take a 31-30 lead heading into halftime.
The Eagles then outscored Marshall 21-17 in the third period to overtake the Thundering Herd and grab a 51-48 lead heading into quarter number four. Morehead State played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 21 points in the paint.
The Eagles then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. Morehead State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 16 points in the paint. Marshall had an opportunity to tie the game at the buzzer, but stellar defense forced a tough shot that missed as time expired.
