Eastern would tack on two more runs in the top of the sixth with a pass ball to score Nicholas Rucker and Riley would be walked with the bases loaded to bring home Grant Lashure to bring the score to 6-1. Hampton would put down the next nine batters between the sixth and eighth innings.

SIUE 8, WESTERN ILLINOIS 7
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.
-  Brady Bunten and Avery Owusu-Asiedu combined for five RBIs as SIUE completed the thee-game sweep of Western Illinois with an 8-7 win Sunday at Simmons Complex.

The Cougars have won four straight, improved to 4-0 at home and are now 8-2 overall. The 8-2 start is SIUE's best start since the 1998 team also started 8-2.

Western Illinois fell to 1-10.

Bunten and Owusu-Asiedu each had RBI-doubles in the bottom of the eighth as the Cougars scored twice to come back after Western Illinois had taken an 7-6 lead in the top half of the inning.

The Cougars took a 2-1 lead in the first when Bunten drove home a run with a sacrifice fly and Ole Arntson singled to score a run. It was 3-2 Western in the second when SIUE answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Drew Mize had an RBI-hit in the inning and Bunten picked up an RBI with a bases loaded walk.

TENNESSEE TECH 13, QUEENS 2
CHARLOTTE, N.C.
- A strong offensive start and a great showing by the pitching staff led the Tennessee Tech baseball team to a 13-2 victory over Queens University of Charlotte Sunday afternoon at Tuckaseegee Fields, as the Golden Eagles clinched the weekend series with their second straight win.

Tech (5-6) went to work right out of the gates, with center fielder Jackson Green leading off the contest with a double to right field. Four pitches later, designated hitter Hayden Gilliland made it an early 2-0 lead, blasting a two-run shot to right field for his third home run of the year.

Queens (3-8) gathered a pair of ground outs, looking to close the frame without further damage, but the Golden Eagles weren't having it. Third baseman Peyton Mills watched four pitches miss the mark for a free pass, setting up shortstop Troy Baunsgard for some fireworks. The junior righty crushed a 3-1 offering down the left-field line, doubling the Tech lead with his third dinger of the season.

The purple and gold added to the lead in the second, with right fielder Theo Bryant IV sending a sacrifice fly to right-center field for a 5-0 advantage. The Royals attempted a comeback bid in the second, picking up a pair on a long ball, but Tech hurler Tyler Zarella locked things down from there.

The senior right-hander held Queens to just the two runs on five hits while completing five frames for his second win of the week. He struck out a pair without issuing a walk as well.

The two sides traded zeroes on the scoreboard in the third, only delaying the Golden Eagles from extending its lead to new territory. In the fourth, the purple and gold turned in a two-out rally, with Bryant getting plunked on the second pitch he saw.

Second baseman Eddie Garza followed with a double to right field two pitches later, plating Bryant all the way from first. Facing a 1-1 count, Mills continued the onslaught by the Cookeville crew, hammering a two-run blast to left-center field for his third round-tripper of the year for an 8-2 lead.

The Golden Eagles didn't stop there, pushing the pedal to the floor in the fifth to put things away for good. Left fielder Austin Turner drew a four-pitch walk to lead off the frame and moved to third on a base knock off the bat of Green.

After Green stole second, Gilliland plated Tuner with an RBI ground out to second base. Bryant reached on a four-pitch free pass and also stole second before advancing to third on a wild pitch that also plated Green. Up 10-0, Garza patiently drew a six-pitch walk to put a pair on.

Mills took his turn in the box and, after watching a strike, connected for a massive, three-run jack to left-center field. The smash marked his second of the game and team-leading fourth of the year while pushing the Golden Eagle lead out to 13-2.

The pitching staffs took over the remainder of the contest, with the Golden Eagles limiting the Royals to just two hits after the fifth and Queens holding Tech to two knocks.
Taking over on the hill for the purple and gold in the sixth, freshman Reece McDuffie turned in pair of solid innings, allowing just the two hits and a walk while striking out three. The Royals threatened in the eighth, loading the bases with no outs after rookie Josh Beasley walked one and hit a pair of batters.

Tech head coach Matt Bragga went back to his bullpen, turning things over to right-hander Jacob Morin. The redshirt junior was spectacular, striking out the side to keep Queens off the board. Back out in the ninth, Morin fanned the first two he saw before inducing a game-ending, first-pitch ground out to second base. He finished with five Ks on the day while going six-up, six-down.

Mills led the Tech effort with five RBI and three runs scored with a pair of bombs. Gilliland tacked on three RBI on a pair of hits while Green, Baunsgard, and Dyer also tacked on two knocks each. As a team, the Golden Eagles drew a whopping 13 walks while the pitching staff issued just two all game.

LITTLE ROCK 18, VALPARAISO 8
LITTLE ROCK, Ark.
- The Trojans got off to a hot start Sunday afternoon, going up 15-0 after four innings and scored in every frame en route to an 18-8 victory over Valparaiso. The win puts Little Rock back over the .500 mark on the year, improving to 5-4.

Hoss Brewer made his first start of the 2023 season today and after a shaky start was able to escape the first inning with back-to-back punchouts with two runners in scoring position.

The Trojans first five batters would reach base in the bottom of the first and all nine would come to the plate in the inning. Hitters took turns spraying hits all over the field and put constant pressure on the defense, by the time Valpo had recorded the third out Little Rock had struck for five runs on five hits.

Hoss would make quick work of the eager Beacon batters in the top of the second, getting a groundout and two fly ball outs on just four pitches to get the Trojans back in the dugout looking to add on to the early lead.

Having already chased the Valpo starter after the first inning, the Trojans began to do damage to the bullpen of the opposition. After a one-out single from Tyler Williams and a stolen base, Noah Brewer knocked a double into the left-center field gap scoring the Trojans center fielder. A single from Skyler Trevino in the next at bat scored Noah from second and put Little Rock up seven runs.

The top of the third started with a walk to the Beacons leadoff batter, but a strikeout and double play ended the inning and kept Valpo out of the hit column through three.

Little Rock would strike for its biggest inning of the game in the bottom of the third, again sending all nine batters to the plate for the second time in three innings. A single from Ty Rhoades to begin followed with a double from Ben Harmon got one run in for the Trojans. Luke Pectol would also double a batter later to bring Harmon home. Two infield singles by Williams and Noah, and a hit by pitch of Trevino would load the bases as Jake Wright stepped up to the dish. After a mound visit from the Valparaiso pitching coach, Wright took the first pitch of the at bat and sent it over the left field fence for second Little Rock grand slam of the season. This homerun put the Trojans up 14-0, making the rest of the game essentially a formality.

Scott McDonough entered the game on the mound in the top of the fourth and pitched a 1-2-3 inning which included two strikeouts looking and a groundout in between.

The Trojans added another run in the bottom half of the frame courtesy of a double from Alex Seguine and a single up the middle by Williams which began a trend of one-run offensive innings for Little Rock that would continue throughout the game.

A three-run top of the fifth put a small dent in the Trojan lead, but the Maroon and Silver was able to get one run back in the next half with a single from Aidan Garrett and Luke Dickerson followed by a double from Andrew Pickering to bring home Garrett.

Valpo again struck for three runs in the top of the sixth with a homerun that brought in all of the runs in the inning, drawing the game closer. But Little Rock minimized the effort from Valpo by scoring a run of its own in the bottom of the sixth. Graydon Martin began the offensive effort with an infield single and got to second on a groundout from Williams. Martin then showed exceptional effort by scoring from second on a groundout to short, forcing a throw from first to third before scrambling home for the run.

The Beacons hit another homerun in the top of the seventh, a two-run blast which cut the Trojan lead to nine. Needing a score to end the game via run-rule in the bottom of the seventh, the Trojan batters came up to the plate prepared. A single from Garrett, walk by Dickerson, and single from Pickering ended the competition as Garrett crossed home plate.

Hoss Brewer made his first start of the season after starting 10 games for Little Rock in 2022. The junior right-hander pitched three innings and did not allow a Valparaiso hit while striking out three batters along the way.

Williams led the Trojans in hits today with his 4-for-5 performance, all being singles. The senior from Lilburn, Georgia also scored three times, knocked in two runs, and stole a base.

Wright only had one hit in the game, going 1-for-3, but made it count as he drove in four runs with his grand slam in the third.

Noah Brewer did not get out when he stepped up to the plate this afternoon, going 3-for-3 while also scoring three times and driving in one.

Dickerson and Martin both made their Little Rock debuts in today's game, and each collected a hit in their first Division I at bats.

Six Trojans had multi-hit performances in the offensive outburst, Little Rock reached base with a hit 22 times in the seven inning game. In addition, seven Trojans hit one double each.

KENT STATE 9, UT MARTIN 6 (10)
MARTIN, Tenn.
- The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball squad led for a majority of today’s contest against Kent State but the Golden Flashes scored six runs in their final three innings on the way to a 9-6 Skyhawk setback in 10 innings.

Jack Culumovic blasted a game-tying two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extra innings. However, Kent State (7-4) scored three runs in the top of the 10th and made that lead stand in the bottom half.

Batting out of the leadoff slot, Caleb Hobson went 3-for-5 with an RBI, a run scored and three stolen bases today – finishing just a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. Culumovic’s round tripper was his first of the 2023 campaign as his final stat line was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI’s. Andrew Fernandez went 2-for-4 with two RBI’s while Zac Rice also collected two hits and scored two runs for UT Martin, who falls to 3-9 overall.

Seth Petry delivered another good start for the Skyhawks, allowing three runs on just three hits while fanning four batters over 5.2 innings. Colin Millar (one run in 1.1 innings) and Campbell Cleveland (two unearned runs allowed in two frames) followed before Tucker Reed (0-2) managed three strikeouts in the top of the 10th inning.

Petry cruised through the first inning, retiring the side in order on nine pitches. Hobson ripped the sixth pitch he saw for a triple down the first base line and four pitches later, he came home to score on a Fernandez sacrifice fly to give UT Marin a 1-0 edge.

After the Golden Flashes tied the game with a run in the top of the second, Petry rolled to the tune of two strikeouts in the third – helping the Skyhawks reclaim the lead in the bottom half.

Rice jumped on the first pitch he saw of the afternoon for a double out to deep center, soon coming around to score on a Hobson RBI single through the right side to put UT Martin back on top by a 2-1 margin.

Kent State scored on a sacrifice fly in the fourth before Petry put up another zero on the scoreboard in the fifth.

The Skyhawks went back ahead in the bottom of the fifth as Rice was issued an eight-pitch walk and advanced to third on a Hobson double that landed just inside the right field line. Fernandez then came through with an RBI single to tilt the score back in favor of UT Martin at 3-2.

Petry departed the game in the top of the sixth in line for the win but the Golden Flashes tied the score with two outs in the inning.

Culumovic pulled a triple down the right field line to lead off the sixth and later crossed the plate on a wild pitch, allowing the Skyhawks to take a 4-3 advantage.

Millar was responsible for a scoreless seventh but once again, Kent State used a sacrifice fly to knot the score at 4-4 following eight innings of play.

After the Golden Flashes scored two unearned runs with two away in the top of the ninth, UT Martin evened the score with Culumovic’s clutch homer. Will Smith was hit by a pitch with one out before Culumovic launched a two-run blast beyond the wall in right field, tying the game at 6-all.

However, Kent State scored three runs in the top of the 10th and the Skyhawks could not recover. UT Martin brought the tying run to the dish but both runners were stranded, leaving the Skyhawks with seven men left on base over the final four innings.

WASHINGTON STATE 6, SOUTHERN INDIANA 0
PULLMAN, Wash.
- University of Southern Indiana Baseball was limited to four hits and lost the series finale, 6-0, at Washington State University Sunday afternoon in Pullman, Washington. The Screaming Eagles watch their record go to 5-6, while WSU goes to 10-1.

The USI hitters were stymied throughout the game, only getting two hits from senior leftfielder Ren Tachioka (Japan) and freshman second baseman Caleb Niehaus (Newburgh, Indiana) through the first seven innings. Tachioka, who had a team-best two hits in the game, and senior centerfielder Evan Kahre (Evansville, Indiana) posted USI's best chance to score in the eighth with back-to-back hits, but were stranded at second and third.

WSU took control with single tallies in the first and second; added a pair of tallies in the fourth; and sealed the victory with runs in the fifth and seventh to conclude the 6-0 final.

USI sophomore right-hander Gavin Seebold (Jeffersonville, Indiana) took the loss for the Eagles. Seebold (1-1) allowed five runs on six hits and a walk, while striking out three in five innings of work.
