MOREHEAD STATE 7, EAST TENNESSEE 2; EAST TENNESSEE 6, MOREHEAD STATE 3
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - The Eagles split a doubleheader in a non-conference road matchup against East Tennessee State Tuesday, taking the first game 7-2, before falling in the second 6-3.
Reigning OVC Co-Player of the Week Emily Williams continued her hot hitting with her fifth home run of the season, alongside Taikibrea Campbell, who also left the yard for the first time this season. Erin Boyle went 3-for-3 with an RBI in the first game, while Peyton Jordan picked up four hits over the two games. Madeline Gailor also had a successful day at the dish, coming up with three hits, an RBI, and two runs scored in the doubleheader.
Madi Ogden picked up the win in the first game, tossing her fifth complete game of the season. The sophomore struck out six batters in her seven innings of work, and added another strikeout in a relief appearance in the second game.
ETSU opened the scoring in the first after three consecutive hits made the game 1-0. The Eagles threatened to respond in the top of the second, but left two on base.
After Madi Ogden retired eight batters in a row, the Eagles struck back in the top of the fourth when Emily Williams tied the game with her fifth home run of the season. Erin Boyle then tripled and scored on a fielder's choice from Kaytlyn Cripps, and Taikibrea Campbell smacked a two-run blast to cap off the four run inning.
The Eagles added to their lead in the fifth after Peyton Jordan got aboard with a one out single and was batted home by an RBI single from Williams, making the score 5-1.
The Buccaneers answered back with a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth, but the Eagles added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh. A passed ball brought home Madeline Gailor, and Erin Boyle singled home Peyton Jordan, who singled earlier in the inning, to give the Eagles a 7-2 lead.
Ogden sat down ETSU in order in the bottom of the seventh to secure the complete game victory.
The Eagles got out to a fast start with a leadoff double from Trinity Spear. She was singled home by Madeline Gailor, who also came around to score on an RBI double from Peyton Jordan. Taylor Rhea hit an RBI groundout to score Jordan and give the Eagles the early 3-0 lead.
After Jessie Begley held ETSU without a hit through the first two innings, the Buccaneers broke through in the third, bringing three runs around to even the score.
The Eagles threatened in the fifth and sixth, but couldn't break the tie, leaving a pair of runners on in the fifth and the bases loaded in the sixth.
ETSU took advantage with three runs in the sixth, capped off by a two-run home run to take a 6-3 lead.
The Eagles again got runners on base in the seventh, but couldn't bring them around to score, falling 6-3.
SIUE 3, BRADLEY 2; SIUE 3, BRADLEY 2
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - SIUE picked up a pair of 3-2 victories over Bradley at Cougar Field on Tuesday.
The Cougars improved to 10-14 with the doubleheader sweep over the Braves, now 8-16. SIUE returns to action this weekend for a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series against UT Martin. The series begins with a 1 p.m. Saturday doubleheader and concludes Sunday with a 1 p.m. finale.
SIUE used a three-run third inning to push past Bradley in game one. Lexi King reached on a error that brought home Micah Arps. Paige Rocha also would score on an error after King stole second base. Emma Neuman capped off the scoring with an RBI double that brought King home.
Rylie Pindel captured the victory after coming into the game in the middle of the first inning. Pindel yielded eight hits but kept Bradley frustrated with 12 runners left on base.
Game two was easily a pitcher's duel for the first five innings between Bradley's Abbott Badgley and SIUE's Kelsey Ray.
In the sixth inning, Bradley struck hard with a home run by Grace French to left field to put the Braves up 2-0.
The SIUE offense answered and quickly with three in the bottom of the sixth. Rocha scored on an infield error. Lexi King would score after stealing third and speeding home after an errant throw. Neuman's single to center field to drive home pinch runner Katie Smith provided the eventual game-winner.
Neuman wasn't done there. She made a heads up defensive play in the seventh. Bradley's Ashley Breeding led off the seventh with a base hit. Bradley's Addie Welch put down a bunt that was caught by Neuman, who was just moved to first base defensively. As Neuman fell to her knees to make the catch, Breeding tagged up and tried to move into scoring position, but Neuman quickly jumped up and fired the ball to Rocha at second base to tag Breeding out.
Ray earned the win by going the distance. She struck out seven in her second win of the season.
