EVANSVILLE, Ind.
- University of Southern Indiana Men's Soccer could not overcome a pair of defensive miscues in falling Mercer University, 2-0, Sunday morning in the home opener at Strassweg Field. The Screaming Eagles start the year 0-2-0, while Mercer ends the first weekend of 2023 1-1-0.
 
USI trailed 1-0 after the first half after following a defensive breakdown at the 11:04 mark of the match. The Bears led the Eagles 7-5 in shots, putting a pair of shots on target.
 
The second half was a back and forth battle until USI senior midfielder Nick Faddis (St. Louis, Missouri) narrowly missed tying game at 63:11. Mercer responded six minutes later, 69:07, when the Bears split a pair of Eagle defenders for second tally of the match to seal the 2-0 contest.
 
Overall for the Eagles, USI was outshot, 15-10, but had a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.

LOYOLA CHICAGO 2, LINDENWOOD 0
CHICAGO
- Lindenwood men's soccer (0-0-2, 0-0-0 OVC) dropped their second match of the season by a final score of 2-0 against Loyola Chicago (1-0-0, 0-0-0 A-10) in Chicago, Ill. Lions had two shots on goal in the loss.

For the second match in a row, the Lions held their opponent scoreless in the first half of play. Goalkeeper Enzo Gil had four saves in the first half on 10 shots by the Ramblers. Lindenwood's Parker Smith had one shot on goal in the first half but was saved by Loyola's Aidan Crawford.

Loyola Chicago would strike twice in 40 seconds to open up the second half. Markus Maurer had the first goal during the 60th minute that went by Gil in the top right of the net. Benni Hofmann then scored during the 61st minute to extend the Ramblers' lead to 2-0.

Lindenwood had seven of their eight shot attempts in the second half. Loyola Chicago had 19 total shots including seven shots on goal. The Ramblers' also had 10 corner kicks to just two by the Lions.

Henrique Peresrelo had the other shot on goal in the second half for the Lions. Matteo Boasso and Smith both had two shot attempts during the match.

CHICAGO STATE 3, MILWAUKEE 2
MILWAUKEE
- The Chicago State men's soccer team scored three goals in a nine-minute span late in the second half to complete a comeback from a two-goal deficit to win 3-2 over the Milwaukee Panthers Sunday afternoon at Engelmann Stadium in Milwaukee. Danail Sergiev scored in the 76th minute and in the 84th before Iann Topete knocked in the game winner with under five minutes to complete the comeback victory.

In the first half, the Panthers came out hot offensively with a goal just nine minutes into the match to go up 1-0.

The Panthers continued to press offensively and the Panthers scored again in the 25th minute to increase the lead to 2-0.

Chicago State produced several offensive opportunities but were unable to find the back of the net as the Panthers led 2-0 at the break.

To start the second half, the Cougars continued to attack as they produced several scoring chances, yet it wasn't until the 76th minute that Danail Sergiev swiftly finished to get back into the match at a 2-1 score.

Chicago State turned the match around as Sergiev knocked in his second of the match in the 84th minute to knot the score 2-2, setting up Iann Topete's game winner in the 85th minute.

The Cougars improve to 1-1.

UIW 1, ST. BONAVENTURE 1
SAN ANTONIO
- The Cardinals and the Bonnies were locked in a tight game through the first half. Neither team had scored but UIW had eight shots and St. Bonaventure had three.
 
In the 68th minute the game Andres Javitt from St. Bonaventure found himself with the ball in front of goal after a deflection off of a UIW player. Javitt scored to put the Bonnies up one.
 
The Cardinals quickly responded and in the 69th minute Peleg Armendraiz headed the ball into the back of the net on a pass from Miles Merritt.
 
The teams went back and forth for the final 20 minutes, each getting shots on goal. However the match ended with the score tied at one.

SIUE 3, BUTLER 1
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.
-  Alsadiq Hasan scored twice in the second half Sunday to lead SIUE to a 3-1 win over Butler in the Cougars' 2023 home opener at Korte Stadium.

The Cougars have won six consecutive home openers and improved to 2-0 this season. Butler dropped to 0-2.

The Cougars opened the scoring in the 19th minute when Sam Layton got us head on a corner kick from Mitchell Murphy.  

The goal marked the second straight game that SIUE has scored first.

For Layton, the goal was his first of the year and the second of his career.

Butler's Palmer Ault leveled the game for the Bulldogs in the 34th minute after SIUE had a goal called back for an offside call just a few minutes prior.

Hasan netted his first Cougar goal in the 50th minute after a foul in the box led to a penalty. Hasan chipped a shot into the left corner for the 2-1 lead. Hasan didn't have to wait long for his second. Butler goalkeeper Caleb Norris came to the top of the box, with the ball at his feet, when it was taken away by Murphy. Murphy left it for Hasan, who slid into the empty net for the 3-1 lead

Butler finished with an 11-8 advantage in shots. The Cougars turned away all six shots Butler took in the second half.

Sam Gomez made four saves in goal for the Cougars. Norris made two for Butler.
