EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Ring Malith's historic 19 rebounds led the Cougars to a dominant 83-49 win over St. Ambrose Saturday night at First Community Arena.
SIUE improved to 5-3 on the year and remains undefeated (2-0) at home. St. Ambrose fell to 5-2.
SIUE led by two midway through the first half, but a Desmond Polk fast break dunk would give the Cougars a seven point lead at the 7:11 mark.
The Cougars extended to their biggest lead of the first half, 32-19, on a pair of free throws by Brian Taylor II.
SIUE took a 34-21 lead into halftime.
The Cougars led by double digits the rest of the game. In the midst of a 15-2 run a Ray'Sean Taylor three made it 43-25 early in the second half.
SIUE took its biggest lead of the game on a Raynard Horry layup for the final score with 1:08 left.
Ring Malith recorded his first career double-double with 10 points, 19 rebounds and 4 assists.
The 19 rebounds are the most recorded by a Cougar since Anthony Smith's 18 rebounds on January 22, 1994, and a SIUE Division I record.
Ray'Sean Taylor led all scorers with 15 points. He added 8 rebounds and he dished out 7 assists.
SIUE shot 31 of 74 (42 percent) from the field and 7 of 28 (25 percent) from behind the three-point arc.
The Cougars went 11 of 13 from the free-throw line.
SIUE had 21 assists and 9 turnovers with just one turnover coming in the second half.
SIUE outrebounded St. Ambrose 54-34 and the Cougars scored 44 points in the paint.
St. Ambrose was led by Collin Wainscott off the bench who scored 9 points on 2 of 9 from the field and connecting on a three pointer. Wainscott was 4 of 4 from the free throw line.
