CHARLESTON, Ill. - Eastern Illinois used an explosive third quarter and a dominating day in the paint as the Panthers picked up their second straight win with a 66-49 win over IU Indy on Wednesday afternoon at Groniger Arena.
Leading by just five points at the half, 22-17, EIU would out score IU Indy 26-17 in the third quarter to give the Panthers the breathing room they needed in the contest.
Kiyley Flowers scored with 7:26 to play in the third quarter to spark a 12-0 Panthers run over the next three minutes pushing the lead out to 38-19. Five different players scored during the run with Lyric Johnson scoring four of the 12 points.
Faith Stinson ended the EIU run with a bucket with 4:33 to play in the quarter. EIU would eventually extend the lead to as high as 23 points in the quarter with Ellie Colson’s lay-up with 2:37 to play in the third.
The Jaguars closed the third quarter with a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 14 points but never got closer than 13 points the remainder of the game. Jada Patton led IU Indy with 17 points.
EIU had balanced scoring all day with ten of the twelve players that saw time on the court all scoring four or more points. Macy McGlone led EIU with 14 points as part of a 62-26 points in the paint advantage for the Panthers.
Flowers had eight points, six assists and four steals. Tiny Lewis had eight points, four assists off the bench.
EIU did not knock down a 3-pointer in the game finishing 0-of-14 from behind the arc snapping a streak of 38 consecutive games with at least one 3-pointer made. The last time EIU failed to hit a 3-pointer was March 3, 2023 against Tennessee Tech in the OVC Tournament semifinal.
EIU improved to 2-4 on the season while IU Indy falls to 1-6.
